In my last blog post I wrote about the Three of Pentacles – bringing body, mind and spirit together synergistically toward a goal using talents and skills. Another earth element card takes that idea one step further - the Eight of Pentacles. This card is often referred to as the apprentice – a beginner, a learner.

Achieving a goal begins with actually envisioning the end result and knowing it will be worthy of your time and talents. With the patience and persistence of a craftsman projects become successful end results. The Eight of Pentacles asks us to pay attention to the details; to be meticulous and focused; to work through the rough times even if they are tedious. It also asks us to be students of the process. I often say, “There is always a first time.”  It’s in those “first” times we accidentally or on purpose explore our limits. Often we need to seek help to get through the “I don’t know what I don’t know” times, too. This is when the Eight of Pentacles appears asking us to be apprentices in our own lives; whether that is by taking classes, learning from those more talented and experienced, or actually being an apprentice in some endeavor. 

More deeply, the Eight of Pentacles asks us to check our ego at the door of our soul. It warns of being too caught up in creating our identities based solely on our craft, and asks us to work in harmony with nature and the world. In a metaphysical sense it serves to remind us to open our hearts, not only to pleasure in material things, but also to truly see and experience God’s hand in our lives.

I think of the Eight of Pentacles often during my project. Most tarot decks depict a man or woman head down in detail work or studying. But I find the symbolism of the spider creating her web in Shadowscapes Tarot the ultimate in meticulous attention to details while being in harmony with nature. The spider’s talent is hard wired into her genetics; we, however, have a choice. We can choose what we want to learn and who will teach us. 

When I set out to create my enclosure for my boat I knew I would need help. I am always a student, and sometimes a teacher. As a “student” on this project I am learning from many resources and taking great care and paying attention to the details - stitch by stitch. It may take me longer than professionals in the marine canvas industry, but I am not beyond asking for help from them. I am also taking time to appreciate my abilities and strengths through yoga and meditation.
