Is It Time to Pivot?

Most humans prefer to avoid change. Yet, we all know that change is the only constant in life. We also know that it makes no sense to repeatedly do something that does not work well, expecting for different results.

Tenacity can pay off. Sometimes, though, we need to change the way we do things. That need to pivot from one idea to another, or to make a change in our plans or our path, can happen for many reasons.

It could be that circumstances have changed. Businesses that used to advertise only in newspapers now need to also advertise online, for example.  It could be that what we were doing never worked well, and it is time to admit that and do something different.

We sometimes feel shame when we change our plans, or our belief systems, or our relationship commitments. We may feel we are being disloyal. We may feel a sense of failure.

Life would be so much easier if we could celebrate the courage that it takes to embrace change and to pivot to something new.
“But we’ve always done it this way!” is something people say when confronted with the need for change. Traditions matter, and consistency is valuable. Yet, sometimes a pivot is exactly what is needed to bring in new energy and new possibilities.

How do you know when it is time to pivot? When things are not working, you have to make adjustments. If those adjustments do not make things better, you may need a more drastic change.

No matter our age, or how long we have done things a specific way, we must always be ready to make proactive change.

Tarot for Decision Making

Tarot is an amazing tool to help with decision making. Often, a series of questions, with one or a few cards pulled in answer, can help us figure out when to stay, when to go, when to change, and what to do.

We can ask simple questions about our choices. Sometimes it makes sense to pull a single card for each option. This can help us see if one option is obviously favorable. This can also give us information about our options.

We can ask if a situation is likely to improve. We can ask what we can do to improve a situation. We can ask what we can do to generate new opportunities. We can ask if we are better to stay where we are, or if we are better to make a change.

Tarot cannot make our decisions for us. But tarot can help us to focus, to see our situation more clearly, and to be aware of all the factors.

Guidance on the Journey

Pivots, choices, and changes are often big decisions about big things in life. We must make decisions about smaller things, as well. What tarot deck to use, or to buy, is a question we often ask ourselves.

Most of us will end up owning more than one tarot deck. Some of us will use a deck until we wear it out, and then replace it. Others have different decks for different sorts of readings.

I make a distinction between collector decks and what I call ‘workhorse decks.’ Workhorse decks are readily available and inexpensive, easy for me to read, and comfortable for clients.

There are tarot decks I like to use for live readings on YouTube, but do not use for private clients. There are some tarot decks I reserve to use only for personal readings, or only for certain types of questions.

The bottom line is this. There is no one right way to manage a tarot collection, or to decide what deck to use for a particular reading, or a particular purpose.

There are tarot decks that are easy decks for tarot beginners.

I think some of the worst advice people commonly give tarot beginners is to choose a deck they “feel drawn to”. Very often this causes new tarotists to buy a deck with pretty pictures that are hard to understand and interpret.

Another piece of common bad advice is to switch decks if you do not like the cards you are receiving. An uncomfortable reading is not the fault of the deck, it is a reflection of the truth.

When is it time to switch decks?

Sometimes a new deck will spark intuition simply by bringing new colors and images to the eyes. I like to switch decks under two conditions. The first is when a deck is worn to the point that it stops shuffling well. The second is when I stop feeling excited by the cards.

The more decks we know, the better readers we become. This is why pivoting from one deck to another can often be a good idea.
