Was Your Intuition Wrong?

I had an interesting conversation recently. My friend had experienced a strong feeling that something specific was going to happen, but that thing did not happen. “My intuition was wrong,” she said.

That struck me.

We always tell people to listen to your intuition. We say that your intuition will never let you down. We say that you should always trust your intuition. Is it possible that your intuition could be wrong?

After a few moments of thought, I concluded something I think is an important truth.

“Your intuition was not wrong,” I said to my friend. “You failed to correctly identify the voice of intuition.”

This is the thing we metaphysical teachers so often fail to teach and forget to emphasize.

If the voice of intuition is an important guide, what does that voice sound like? How can we distinguish the voice of intuition from the voice of desire or the voice of fear?

Intuition is not the logical voice, nor the anxious voice, nor the hopeful voice. Intuition cannot be used for bias confirmation. Intuition does not care about cultural context.

Usually, when we speak casually of intuition, it is because of a specific type of experience we all have. It goes like this. You have a strong feeling about something but dismiss it as silly, or unimportant. Then, your feeling turns out to be correct. You kick yourself because you should have listened to that feeling. That conversation always ends with the admonition that you should always listen to your intuition. That conversation does not usually dive in to ask the important questions.

When we have a feeling that was confirmed to be a fact, we need to ask ourselves a few things.

What were the specific sensations that accompanied that feeling? What else was going on when we had that feeling?

Just as we go to school to become intellectually strong and we go to the gym to become physically strong, we need to exercise our intuition. We do that by figuring out what the truth feels like, and what the voice of our intuition sounds like.

We can only trust our intuition when we learn to identify intuition, and separate intuition from all the other thoughts and feelings swirling around in the mind and heart.

Three Ways to Use Intuition in a Tarot Reading

Intuition is involved in every aspect of tarot reading, from the deck you choose to the number of times you shuffle, to the questions you ask.

When interpreting cards, intuition can work hand in hand with your interpretation skills to provide an accurate and insightful reading. Try these three techniques to help integrate intuition into an interpretative reading.

Every tarot card has multiple classic keywords and interpretations. Use your intuition to discover which keywords and interpretations are most appropriate in the reading.

A tarot reading is not simply a series of card descriptions, keywords, and interpretations. Use your intuition to extrapolate information that specifically relates to the situation at hand.

When you look at a tarot spread, intuit which cards feel most important. Think about why this card might be important to the story. When you look at a tarot card, see if your eyes are drawn to a particular aspect of the scene. What might that particular image have to say to you?

The Week in Review

This week I wrote a blog post about two Major Arcana cards, the Lovers and the Devil. Read “The Angel and the Devil”.

A new month is here! Check out your tarotscopes on my YouTube channel!

From Around the Web

Tarot enthusiasts very often write about Major Arcana 0, the Fool, in honor of April Fool’s Day. Here are some of my favorites from years past.

Here is an April Fool’s Tarot spread from Wild Women Universe.

Here are some thoughts and a tarot spread from Barbara Moore.

Also from Barbara Moore, and inspired by Sasha Graham, here is a Fool card tarot ritual.

Guidance on the Journey

There are two specific Major Arcana cards in tarot that are most often associated with intuition. Those two cards are the High Priestess and the Moon. Here is how we see intuition in each of them.

The High Priestess travels into the subconscious, and beyond the veil into other worlds. Her spiritual journeying allows her to see what others cannot. The High Priestess asks us to look within and beyond, as she does, to find our truth.

The Moon reminds us that in the moonlight things look different than they do in daylight. We must use our intuition to avoid missteps and pitfalls as we make our way through the dark.

When either or both cards appear in a reading, they may be a signal to look deeper, and to find the truths that are hidden. They may tell you to develop your psychic senses, and to trust your intuition.

Yet, both cards may, in a reading, offer more mundane information as well. The High Priestess can be about secrecy, silence, or perfection. The High Priestess may speak specifically of a woman, or attitudes regarding a woman, or women. The Moon may warn you of the treachery of a hidden enemy.

Sometimes readers memorize a particular meaning of a card and look no further when that card appears. For both the Moon and the High Priestess, that obvious meaning is often about intuition. While that may be a perfect interpretation in some readings, in others, you will need to use your own intuition to look deeper to find a more specific and helpful meaning.
