When Can You Trust Yourself?

So often we encourage each other to trust ourselves more. It comes up in tarot readings all the time! We second-guess ourselves and believe that other people know more than we do. We are right to work on trusting ourselves better and more. It makes sense that tarot would nudge us in that direction.

Yet, there is a catch.

Sometimes people can be the worst keepers of their own truth. Typically, this results from emotional abuse or neglect in childhood or long-term relationships.

For example, if you have been repeatedly told you are lazy or stupid, you will believe and trust it. The false narrative of your laziness and stupidity will become your truth.

Before we can genuinely trust ourselves, we must unpack the false things we have been told and the false things we have told ourselves.

Another way we may become untrustworthy to ourselves is when we hold too firmly to a fear, a desire, or a belief. Our growth requires that we consistently reexamine our feelings, our beliefs, and our goals.

Our understanding of the world around us and our place in it must constantly evolve. We become solid in our sense of self when we allow that evolution.

Compassionate Detachment

They say that the cards never lie. Over many years I have found this to be true. Yet, we tarot readers can sometimes get the interpretation wrong.

Tarot speaks truth and can help us know and live our truth. Yet, this can only happen when we can trust the interpretation. This is true in self-reading, casual reading, and professional reading.

The best way to perform a trustworthy reading is from a place of compassionate detachment.

To do that, try the following in a meditative state just before your reading.

Affirm your desire for the best possible outcome. Affirm your understanding that you (or your querent) will embrace and endure whatever comes. Release any attachment that you have to the outcome. If you are reading for someone else, either casually or professionally, acknowledge that you will have the presence of mind to deliver whatever information you get with compassion and honesty. If you are reading for yourself, recognize your commitment to using whatever information you receive for the best possible outcome.

This practice of compassionate detachment allows intuition to thrive and truth to come forward.

Creation and Divination

I use creativity to find new ideas, lessons, and guidance from specific groups of tarot cards. For example, we first learn that tarot Aces are about new beginnings. After some introspection, I also discovered that the Aces can each represent the essence of their suit element.

When speaking with some tarot friends recently, I began thinking about the tarot Sevens. Usually, I believe the Sevens represent the journey of the individual. But now, I am adding to that. Or, more specifically, diving into that concept of the individual’s journey to include and emphasize the journey toward personal truth and trust.

The Seven of Swords is easy to see in this context. Often known as ‘the thieves’ card, the Seven of Swords can ask us to be clear about our truth, and our own moral compass.

The Seven of Pentacles image in the Waite-Smith deck was meant to depict the Irish Potato Famine. However, in modern times we have become kinder in our interpretation of this card, suggesting that a harvest will come with hard work.

I can easily see trust issues within this card. Can we trust that the harvest will be there? Can we trust ourselves to do the work to make it happen?

The Seven of Wands depicts a defensive posture. The question here is straightforward. Are we right to be defensive and to set boundaries, or should we be more trusting of those around us?

The Seven of Cups depicts a fantasy, or an array of choices. This card asks us which things we want and can trust, and which things we should pass by.

The Major Arcana Seven is the Chariot. Here, we must trust our path and our journey. The black and white steeds remind us that every truth has nuances and that every journey must allow differences, choices, collaborations, and compromises.

Do you find wisdom about truth and trust in the Sevens of tarot?
