The Power of Prediction

Concept illustration of a crystal ball.

Most people believe that tarot reading and psychic work are always about predicting the future, and they are surprised to learn that not every reader and not every reading is predictive.

Looking toward the future is something we naturally do. Everyone makes future predictions at some point, in some way. Doctors predict our health. Meteorologists help us plan our activities. Economic forecasters help us plan our finances. Trend spotters help us curate our wardrobes for the next fashion season.

Clearly, predictions are not always mystical.

We look to the future for hope, planning, and preparation. Yet quantum physics tells us that the minute we look at something, we change it.

Does divining the future change the future?

I think it does, but only in the most positive ways.

I recently led workshops on prediction in divination in my StaarCon 2024 AfterGlow Lounge, and we have had some very interesting conversations.

We discussed the questions we ask tarot that feel predictive but are not. These questions we ask about our future are within our control.

Here’s the difference.

“Will my house sell soon?” is about something out of our control. When we ask that question, we assume everything we can do to help the house sell has already been done, and we want to know what potential buyers will do.

By contrast, “Will I finish my project by the deadline?” is something that is within our control. When we ask a question like this, we are looking for guidance to help us succeed.

One thing tarot readers quickly learn is how much of the future is within our control.

Yet, there is also much that we don’t control.

I believe that wise predictions, even when they don’t offer what we had hoped for, can help us create the best future possible. Knowledge is power. If we are aware of something, we can prepare, mitigate, and perhaps take steps to avoid it.

Predictions can make us feel hopeless. Or, when we use them correctly, predictions can always give us the power to meet the future with hope, no matter what.

It’s easy to fear the future, with or without forecasting. Yet, when we trust ourselves to handle whatever happens, we can also trust that our future is worth planning for.  Then, we can have faith that good things are always on their way.

Three Ways to Make Predictions with Tarot

Not every tarot reader makes future predictions. If you want to use tarot to forecast the future for yourself or someone else, you can do it in a few ways.

You can use a tarot spread that has predictive positions. Any spread with a position for ‘future’ or ‘final outcome’ will have a prediction built in. Interpret the cards that fall into those positions as possibilities for the future.

You can think about a question for the future and pull cards to answer that question. While some readers are uncomfortable with yes/no questions, many of us use techniques to answer binary predictive questions effectively.

A third way to predict the future with tarot is to ask what might happen and pull a few cards. Interpret the cards you pull to inform you about possible future events.

Obviously, never use the cards to scare anyone. If difficult cards appear to describe future events, ask questions and pull more cards to help you understand and mitigate any upcoming problems.

From Around the Web

As someone who lived and worked in Pennsylvania, I can’t say I was surprised to read that officials there are using archaic laws to harass a tarot reader.

Making Magic

The goal of magic is often to influence future events. The worry when we do this is that our magic might have unintended consequences. For example, imagine performing magic to bring quick money and having that money come as compensation for a devastating accident.

The late great Donald Michael Kraig often suggested that we should do a divination about our magical intention to make sure our plan is wise.

We feel called to influence future events when we are trying to avoid a problem or when we are trying to achieve a goal. We might use magic to help along a positive prediction or mitigate a negative one.

Whatever tools we use in magic, the most important tool is our visualization of the future we want to create. The more clearly we can hold that vision, the more likely we are to be successful.

This is one of the reasons that I love tarot magic. Because tarot is visual, it helps us create and successfully hold our vision.
