Presence

“Presence” is a word I love to use during the holiday season because it sounds like the thing people become obsessed with (presents) but is so much more important.

During the flurry of decorating, cleaning, baking, shopping and visiting that happens this time of year we often forget to simply take a moment to enjoy the season and share it with the people who really matter to us.

This holiday season, spend time with the people you love. If you can, donate your time to your community.  Take some moments for yourself, too. Savor a holiday treat. Enjoy your neighbors' holiday lights. Watch an old favorite holiday movie.

During the holidays, being present for yourself and others is perhaps the best present you can give!

Being Present with Tarot

I have a young tarot student who once said “Tarot brings me back to center.”

She said this years ago, but it stuck with me as something that can be universally true about tarot.

Tarot brings us back to center. Tarot helps us be in the now. Tarot helps us be truly present.

As an exercise in using tarot this way, try asking the following questions and pulling a card, or a few cards, in answer.

What’s going on right now?

To what do I need to pay most attention?

What are the distractions that I need to dismiss in my life?

How can I appreciate the now more?

What do I need to do to be truly present for the people I care about?

What can I do to show up better for myself?

Tarot is a wonderful friend in that it will always give you an honest answer, and usually in a way that is helpful, spiritual and insightful.

It is easy for us to separate the spiritual from the mundane; to set aside spirituality for special times and dig in to our mundane tasks without thought to their spiritual implications. Tarot helps us find the spiritual nature of every aspect of life. When we are able to do that, we are truly present.

The Week in Review

This week on the Tarot Topics Community Blog Joanne Matthew shared a seasonal post. In "Getting the Christmas Tree" the Major Arcana characters work together to follow a holiday tradition.

My contribution to the Community Blog this week was another "Answers to Your Questions about Tarot video." The topic was "The Two of Wands." If you have a question about tarot please email me!

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote a post for tarot enthusiasts who don’t desire to read professionally. I hope you enjoy "Seven Ways to Take Tarot to the Next Level without going Pro."

On my Dark Forest blog I shared another list of seven things. This one is "Seven Rules for Personal Happiness."

Tarot Shows Us What is Present

In a professional tarot reading, or in a reading we do for ourselves, tarot shows us what is present in our lives.

When I do a reading I always like to start with a general spread – I use a modified eleven-card Celtic Cross. Other good general spreads are astrology spreads, because they tend to have a card for each house or for each sign. Either way, they often offer the same sort of information.

What’s great about these kinds of spreads is that they show what is truly going on in a person’s life.

With a general spread I can see what’s on your mind, I can see your biggest challenge, I can see what’s in your heart, who’s around you, where you’ve been and where you are likely to go.

When you learn, through a great professional reading or a reading you do for yourself, what is truly present in your life, you have a heightened sense of awareness. You have greater control over your present and your future.

If there are things that are present that do not serve you, you have the ability to make changes.

If there are things that you want to be present you have the ability to do what is necessary to bring them in.

If there are things that are present that need your attention you will be clear on what to do.

Many tarot spreads have a position called “Present” that shows us what is going on at present in our lives. I find this to be a very important position because it shows us a snapshot of what is up right now.

Tarot shows us what is present in our lives, helps us to create what we want at present and helps us to be present in life.

What's Up at the Psychic Café?

On December 8th we had the Night of 1000 Fools on the Psychic Café! I was joined by Joanne Matthew, Jordan Hoggard, Val Sherrill, Theresa Pridemore and Lisa de San Croix to discuss the tarot Fool.

We looked at different depictions of the Fool and different traditions for the Fool. We discussed the Fool archetype. Tarot designers told stories of how they came to depict their Fool cards.

You can watch the show in archive on the Tarot Topics News Site.

On December 15th we will have our Holiday Review on the Psychic Café. I’ll show you my favorite gift choices for the metaphysical folks in your life. Amy Forman will share some ideas for healthy and Vegan holiday fare and Bonny Cehovet will share her new book, “Surviving the Holidays, Taking Charge of Your Life.”

We’ll also have a holiday recipe from Robin Renee and a tarot-inspired holiday song from Donnaleigh De La Rose.

For more information, visit the Show Info page and don’t forget to like Christiana’s Psychic Café on Facebook.

The Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune, Card 10, is one of the few Major Arcana images that doesn’t typically picture a person. In the Waite image we see the four corners are adorned with images that represent the writers of the Gospel, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These symbols are also associated with the four fixed astrological signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. As such, they also represent the Four Elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

The Wheel itself contains the letters that spell “tarot,” as well as symbols for the four elements and the Hebrew letters of the Tetragrammaton, the “Unspeakable name of God.”

Arguably, there is more esoteric symbolism in the imagery of this card than in many others. I think this is because the Wheel of Fortune discusses such esoteric concepts.

The Wheel of Fortune is always spinning. If you are on top now, hang on because the Wheel will turn and you will be on the bottom again. If you are on the bottom now, don’t worry because soon you will rise to the top.

We are all subject to the cycles of nature.

Key words for this card include cycles, karma, fate and luck.

On a mundane level this card can indicate gambling, either in a casino or in life. It can discuss the cyclical nature of something. The Wheel of Fortune can indicate that luck is with you, that anything can happen or that what is happening is connected to a larger karmic issue.

The Wheel of Fortune can predict a lucky break and encourage you to take a chance.

The wheel of Fortune reminds you to accept the natural cycles of life.

Next week we will discuss card 11, Justice.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Seven of Cups. In the image we can see that each cup is filled with something different. Some cups are filled with desirable things. Other are filled with less desirable things.

The Seven of Cups can tell us it is time to make careful decisions. What do you want to manifest in your life?

The Seven of Cups also warns us against fantasy and illusion. What is real and possible in your life?

This week, as you consider the upcoming New Year, ponder this question.

What is possible for me to manifest in 2014, and what do I really want?
