Stretch!

Did you make a resolution for the New Year? Here’s one I think we all should make together!

“In 2014 I will stretch out of my comfort zone to do new things, try new things and learn new things.”

It’s so easy to get caught in the rut of doing what’s comfortable. But comfortable is sometimes boring. And comfortable almost always lacks excellence.

Let’s make a commitment to ourselves and each other to stretch into something new this year – to expand our horizons, do something difficult, learn more and try harder.

This sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true. The harder we stretch ourselves to do the hard things, the easier life becomes.

Stretching Out of the Comfort Zone with Tarot

In tarot, the number five is often considered the number of expansion.

If you look at the Five cards in the four suits of the Minor Arcana you might think they were all about struggle and conflict.

The number four is the number of stability.

If you look at the Four cards you will see that in each Four card is a safe and stable place to be, if not always a happy one. The truth is, many times we choose safety over happiness.

In the Fives, we see the conflict that comes from stretching out of the comfort zone. Sometimes it is fear of this conflict and struggle that keeps us from venturing out of the Four and into the Five.

The number six is the number of victory.

In the Sixes, we see the victorious result. The victory can’t be reached directly from the safe space of the Four. We must pass through the tumultuous Five to reach the success of the Six.

With these twelve cards, the Four-Five-Six of each suit, we can see a map of what happens when we stretch out of the comfort zone and into the place where real success can happen.

Try pulling these cards from you deck and exploring them. Arrange them as you see in the photo, and look at the stories they tell. Meditate with them, write about them and divine with them. How does seeing the story of moving to victory from comfort help you understand your own self-imposed limitations? How does it inspire you to push out of your own comfort zone?

The Week in Review

I celebrated the New Year on my Dark Forest blog with an interested observation. Our global New Year’s Eve celebration is really an old-school magickal ritual! "Read Every Year the Nations On Earth do Magick Together."

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about a difficult problem that happens in interpersonal relationships. Have you ever been in "Emotional Danger?"

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog I wrote a piece for serious tarotists. It’s called "Seven Ways to Know it’s Time to Go Pro."

On my PaganSquare tarot blog, 78 Magickal Tools, I wrote "A Tarot Spell for 2014."

From Around the Web

In tarot numerology, 2014 is associated with the tarot Chariot. Read what Beth Owl’s Daughter has to say about "The Tarot Year of the Chariot."

From whats-your-sign.com, here is a fun article about creating a personal symbol.

From The Unbounded Spirit, here are "20 Powerful Secrets to Meaningful Relationships."

Reach for the Stars

So many times we choose not to attempt something because it seems difficult. Maybe it will take some time, or require us to learn something new. Maybe we would have to give up some of our creature comforts.

It is usually not laziness that keeps us from pursuing our dreams. Often it is simply fear that keeps us caught and afraid to move forward.

Eventually the fear that we will regret not trying may become more insistent than the fear of leaving the comfort zone.

If you have a goal you have yet to pursue, or a situation that you need to change, let 2014 be the year you work through your fear and leave your comfort zone. Let 2014 be the year you reach for the stars.

As you do, please remember these three things.

If you wait for a time when you are not afraid you will wait forever. Courage is not the lack of fear, courage is doing it anyway.

If it were easy, everyone would do it. Being exceptional means dong something hard.

It will be worth it.

Temperance

Major Arcana card 14 is Temperance. We see an angel balancing on water and land, and pouring between two cups.

Temperance completes the second group of seven numbered Major Arcana cards. I call these cards, Strength through Temperance, the cards of Emotional Balance. I believe that each of these seven cards gives us real insight into ways to stay emotionally balanced and well.

Traditionally, Temperance is the card of Art, Alchemy and Time. The process we see in the card suggests the process of alchemy – to take specific things and mix them together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Temperance teaches us that nothing is perfect. But, if we take a bit of this and a bit of that and mix them together we can find the perfect blend.

Key words for Temperance include patience, caution, balance and blend.

Temperance encourages us to pay attention to details such as timing and exact measure.

On a mundane level Temperance could encourage any creative activity, from painting to cooking.

Temperance also suggests that we be creative in the way we think; that we find ways to make things work.

When Temperance shows up in a reading it could tell you that it is possible to make something work if you are patient and precise.

Temperance may advise you to be patient, cautious and creative.

Temperance reminds us of the spiritual value of blending and balancing.

Next week we will confront Major Arcana 15, the Devil!

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Four of Cups.

Here we see a person who has been offered three cups, and then a special fourth cup. He seems to be unhappy with all his choices, and reaches for none.

This card suggests that you take a look at all your options. It may indicate that you are not happy with your options, or that you wish for something more, or something else.

The Four of Cups invites you to ask some questions of yourself.

What are my options?

How do I feel about my options?

Should I take something that is available to me even though I am not enthusiastic about it?

Should I wait patiently for another option?

In this context, the Four of Cups does not offer advice or predict an outcome. The Four of Cups ask you to consider your options and to make sure that the way you perceive your situation is in line with what serves you best.
