Be Prepared! As we welcome the merry month of May this week, our hearts and prayers go out to the people who are dealing with natural disasters and weather-related dangers. We are always told to be prepared for disaster. If and when it strikes, we need to be ready. At the same time, it doesn’t seem right to walk around expecting bad things to happen. We also need to be prepared that sometimes wonderful things can take us by surprise. Somehow, we need to prepare for the worst, but anticipate the best. This is true on a spiritual level, as well as on a practical one. One of my favorite poems, Desiderata, by Max Erhmann, advises us on this topic by saying, in part, “Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.” When difficult things happen, we have an opportunity to help each other, and to find the lessons in our situation. When wonderful things happen, we have an opportunity to share our success with others. Worrying that terrible things might happen doesn’t help us at all. Being prepared and ready for anything allows us to enjoy the blessing of each moment. |
Five Ways Tarot Helps us be Prepared Noted tarot author Mary K. Greer teaches a wonderful perspective on tarot. What she wisely says about tarot is this. "Tarot helps you meet whatever comes in the best possible way." That’s right. Tarot helps us be prepared. But how? Here are five ways I think tarot helps us be prepared. 1. Tarot gives us predictions that help us prepare for what might be coming, emotionally or practically. 2. Tarot helps us make the decisions that allow us to create our best possible future. 3. Tarot gives us a spiritual understanding of why certain things happen. 4. Tarot gives us the perspective we need to get the most out of any situation. 5. Tarot helps us heal from things that hurt us. Can you think of other ways tarot helps us meet our future? |
The Week in Review This week on my Tarot Topics Community Blog I answered another question about tarot. Watch my video about the Suit of Wands. Also on the Community Blog this week, Joanne Matthew wrote about the confusion that comes with the variety of tarot images and possible tarot interpretations. Read “Major Confusion.” On my Dark Forest Blog you can read my “Three Ways to Nurture your Inner Child.” You might want to give them a try! This weekend I was a presenter at a local library Open House. I had fifteen minutes to speak about Tarot History. What can you say about tarot in fifteen minutes? Quite a lot, it turns out. Read about it on my personal blog, Tarot Trends. From Around the Web Did you know that each year there are tarot conferences, symposia and conventions all over the world? One such event that just happened this past weekend is the annual Reader’s Studio, hosted in New York by Wald and Ruthann Amberstone of the Tarot School. Here are two blog posts from tarotists who were there. This is a recap from veteran attendee Theresa Reed. Here is an account from first-time attendee Angelo Nasios. Jenna Matlin also attended Reader’s Studio, but she had something else to write about this week. I was thrilled with her post “7 Ways a Con Artist is Different from a Legitimate Reader.” |
A "Be Prepared" Tarot Spread Sometimes the problem with being prepared is that we don’t know what to prepare for, or what resources we will need. Sometimes we aren’t even prepared for our success! Here is an original tarot spread that will help you be prepared for anything! Simply lay the cards in a line from left to right. Card 1. How can I be emotionally prepared for anything that might happen? Card 2. How can I anticipate and create the best possibilities for my future? Card 3. What is something that might be coming in my near future for which I should be prepared? Card 4. What personal tools and resources do I have at my disposal? Card 5. What new personal tools, skills and resources should I acquire at this time, so I can be prepared for anything? |
What’s Up at the Psychic Café? This past Sunday, April 27, we enjoyed an encore presentation of our Mother’s Day show from 2013. This show featured a conversation with Hillary Gauvreau. Hillary is an energy healer and teacher. The conversation offered a great deal of information about energy healing, spirituality and metaphysical business practices. You can watch the show in archive on the Tarot Topics news site. This coming Sunday, May 4th, we will have a new, live, original show featuring Fiona Benjamin, the Tarot Reader of Okinawa. Fiona won “Young Tarosophist of the Year” for 2013. Fiona and I will discuss tarot, and what it is to be a young tarot reader in Japan. We will also take your questions for free live psychic readings! For more information, visit the show info page, and don’t forget to like Christiana’s Psychic Café on Facebook. |
Learning Tarot: Nine of Wands In the RWS (Rider-Waite-Smith) image, we see a person standing guard. He has fought, and been wounded, but he stays at his post. He leans a bit on his staff, as if he is tired. He does not go looking for a fight, nor does he leave his duty. I call this card “The Wounded Warrior.” One of the key words I associate with this card is “patience.” Another is “healing.” This card reminds us to do our duty, even when it is difficult. This card reminds us that we need to heal, but warns us that we may not be able to heal in a pampered way. Although the circumstances may be difficult, the Nine of Wands tells us to be patient, and to honor our responsibilities. Now is not the time to take on more than we should, but we should be confident in our ability to do what we must. Sometimes the Nine of Wands can refer to a defensive attitude, or a need to be on guard. The Nine of Wands teaches us that whatever is worth doing, or worth having, is worth defending, and worth guarding. Next week we will complete the story of the Wands pip cards with the Ten of Wands. |

Your One-Card Weekly Reading Your one-card reading this week is the Hermit. The Hermit can be about loneliness, but it can also be about the wisdom we can only find when we are in our own company. The Hermit reminds us to seek the company of others when we need to, but to also seek our own guidance and our own wisdom. The Hermit advises study and education, on both practical and spiritual matters. The Hermit asks you to delight in your own sacred space, to dedicate yourself to gathering wisdom, and to learning to be alone without being lonely. This week, evaluate your opportunity to have quality alone time. Make a commitment to study and learn, and never fear your own company. |
