Here Comes Sunshine!

No matter where in the world I have lived, summer is always my favorite time of year. I love the opportunities to spend time in nature. I love that daylight lasts into the evening. I love the signs of new growth everywhere.

In many cultures, the sun itself is a spiritual symbol, representing everything from eternal life to strength to masculine energy. In the summer, when our experience of the sun is the strongest, we have the opportunity to harness its energy to encourage our own strength and our own growth.

Often it seems that we can follow the Earth’s example. In spring, as the Earth is renewed, we are renewed. Now, as we come in to summer, we have the opportunity to really shine.

As we look forward to the summer months, think about your goals. How will you enjoy your time in the sun? How will you welcome the sunlight into your life? How will you shine?

Finding Happiness with the Sun

For me it makes a great deal of sense that Major Arcana 19, the Sun, is the card of happiness.

Here are two exercises you can do with the Sun card, one divinatory, the other meditative. In each case, the goal of the exercise is to use the energy of the Sun card to bring more happiness into your life.

If you observe the Sun card in many traditional decks, you will see a child on a horse. The child is without clothes, or saddle. The child is fearless, perched on the horse. The child shines so brightly that the sunflowers have turned toward him, rather than toward the sun.

The message of the card is clear. We must ourselves shine more brightly than the sun. We must not be weighed down with worries and fears.

Exercise 1. Take you Sun card and spend some time with it in quiet contemplation. In meditation, imagine yourself as the child on the horse. What does it feel like to be so free, and so fearless? Would you like to go somewhere on the horse, or stay in the garden?

Spend some time allowing yourself to be nurtured in the energy of the Sun. Write down any thoughts or experiences from your meditation.

Exercise 2. Shuffle your cards, thinking about your own happiness. When you feel ready, look through the deck until you find the Sun card. The cards directly before and after it will give you information to help you find your happiness at the current time.

The Week in Review

A few weeks ago, I was a guest on Tarot Dactyl’s BlogTalkRadio Show, “There’s a Rock for That.” You can listen to the show in archive.

This week on our Tarot Topics Community Blog we have a wonderful post from jules3333 about “The Moon.”

My contribution to the Community Blog this week is “Being Honest about the Seven of Swords.”

On my Dark Forest blog, I wrote about the power of the words we use. Read “Harness the Power of Words.”

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about my discomfort with the term “Fortune Teller.”

What’s Up at the Psychic Café?

On June First our topic was “Tarot Gatherings.” My guests were Mary Ellen Collins and Diane Wilkes. We discussed the importance of in-person tarot gatherings, the history of national and international tarot gatherings, the wide variety of gatherings available today and the possibilities for starting your own local gathering.

You can watch the show in archive on the Tarot Topics news site.

This Sunday, June 8, our show will feature a conversation with Amibka Devi. Ambika's new novel, "Lilith," has just been published. We'll find out about this interesting new book, and the inspiration behind the story. We'll also discuss spiritual fiction in general. What makes a great spiritual novel? Why is fiction such a great vehicle for spiritual truth?

Learning Tarot: King of Wands

The King of Wands is the final card in the suit of Wands. This card is the final and highest expression of the Fire energy.

In a reading, the King of Wands can represent a man who is charismatic, dynamic, passionate, creative, athletic, warm or energetic. The King of Wands could also be a woman in a leadership position, or reference to an organization or committee, especially one that deals in arts, culture, sports or spirituality.

The King of Wands can appear in a reading to remind you to be a leader, especially in the areas of life about which you are passionate. The King of Wands may tell you to take a next step in your development, especially a step toward leadership.

The King of Wands could predict a promotion, or the achievement of a particular goal.

Next week we will begin our journey into the suit of Cups.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card Reading this week is the Six of Pentacles.

Typically, the Six of Pentacles is associated with charity, generosity and shared resources. You might find yourself either in a position to offer help, or to receive help.

Either way, remember the nature of a community, and the nature of karma. When one person is helped, we are all better. What you give to others will come back to you, multiplied.

The Six of Pentacles tends to predict financial abundance. This card can caution you to guard against those who would take advantage of you. Share your resources, but do it wisely.

This week, make an effort to share of yourself with others. Help others when you can. At the same time, be willing to allow others to help you when you need it.
