Recreation

Often the summer months allow us the opportunity to make recreation a priority. We take vacations, have barbeques, and enjoy the warmer temperatures.

We gather with friends and family, and with our communities, to celebrate holidays and achievements, to participate in sports and summer fun.

We utilize our parks, beaches and recreation areas, to enjoy our time with loved ones in the beauty of nature.

Sometimes we think of our recreation time simply as having fun, or even fulfilling social obligations.

When we look at the word, we can see that recreation is really the opportunity to “re-create” ourselves.

Real “re-creation” allows us renewal of body, mind and spirit. Recreation isn’t just fun, it’s restorative. It helps us to re-create ourselves.

Finding the Fun in Tarot

There are many cards that can speak of social gatherings, hobbies and activities.

Since each of the Minor Arcana suits is associated with one of the Four Elements, we could associate types of activities with different Elements, and therefore suits.

For instance, the Fire suit, Wands, might be associated with athletic activities, active creative activities and extreme outdoor activities.

The Water suit, Cups, might be associated with quieter creative activities, and activities involving the ocean, lakes, ponds and rivers.

The Air suit, Swords, does not contain the cards most likely to be associated with recreation. However, some Swords cards might be associated with fun activities involving learning and communication.

The Earth suit, Pentacles, might be associated with gardening, baking, hiking, mountain climbing or having a barbeque.

There are many cards that can reference specific activities. For instance, the Three of Cups is the card of parties, social gatherings, music and dance.

The Six of Wands can often refer to a sporting event.

The Wheel of Fortune can indicate visiting a casino.

The Sun can indicate a tropical vacation.

As an exercise in finding the fun in tarot, shuffle your deck and ask this question.

“What should I do for fun?”

Pull one card, and find a way to interpret it that points the way to recreation for you!

The Week in Review

This week I posted another video and blog on the Tarot Topics Community Blog in my “Answers to your Questions about Tarot” series. This time the question was about choosing a beginner tarot deck.

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about “The Four Agreements for Tarot Readers.”

On my Dark Forest blog, I wrote about my reaction to hearing about a food-sharing website in Germany.

On my “78 Magickal Tools” blog on PaganSquare, I wrote about “Creating a Tarot Spell.”

Recreating Body, Mind and Spirit

Here is a twist on the traditional “Body, Mind and Spirit” tarot spread.

You will pull one card for Body, one for Mind and one for Spirit, but you will ask your questions this way.

What do I need to do to re-create my body?

What do I need to do to re-create my mind?

What do I need to do to re-create my spirit?

Learning Tarot: Four of Cups

So far, our journey through the Watery suit of Cups has been so joyful! With the Ace we open our hearts to love. With the Two we find partnership. With the Three we celebrate with our community.

With the Four we are reminded that Cups is the suit of all emotions, not just the happy ones.

In tarot, four is the number of stability. The problem with that stable comfort zone is that we can get stuck, and that is exactly what is happening in the Four of Cups.

In the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) image, a young person sits under a tree, looking dejected. There are three cups in the foreground, he wants none.

A mysterious hand comes to offer him a forth, magical cup.

He doesn’t reach for this cup, either.

The Four of Cups is about being unhappy with your options.

The character in the Four of Cups is stuck, because he either will not or cannot be happy with any of his options.

There are two choices presented in this card.

One is to “suck it up and choose a cup.”

The other is to wait for something better.

One this is for sure. When you see the Four of Cups, it’s time to check your attitude. Are you being stubborn or negative? If so, maybe it is time to make your choice and move forward.

If you really feel it is best to wait for something else, work to make the most of your time now, even if you can’t yet move forward.

Next week, we will explore the Five of Cups.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is Judgement.

Now may be a time to finish projects and achieve goals. Keep your eye on the prize and do not be distracted from your goal.

Once your goal is achieved, remember the value of the final analysis. What did you do well? What did you learn?

If you are looking for a calling, a direction, or spiritual guidance, Judgement tells you to listen more closely to the voice of your angels. You will find the direction you need.

If you are grieving, or healing, or in transition, Judgement reminds you of the imperative to find closure and release.

If you are in business, Judgement advises you to market in a way that allows you to be seen and heard.

It is interesting that Judgement, a card about “rebirth,” is drawn at random for the newsletter edition about “recreation.” Once again, tarot finds a way to speak to the issue at hand.

This week, allow yourself to be re-created and reborn. Allow yourself to be guided and directed on your true path.

This week, release the past and welcome a new future!
