Lessons

Although I have not been a formal student in many years, the end of August always makes me think of going back to school. As the days grow shorter and the weather cools, I want to buy pens and notebooks.

This seasonal focus on learning is probably a good thing. Although most of us don’t spend a lot of time in classrooms, we are always learning. Life teaches us things every day. Sometimes the lessons are easy, and sometimes we learn the hard way.

Learning keeps us sharp, and keeps us engaged in life. As long as we live, there will always be more to learn.

Now, more than ever, there are opportunities for us to learn all kinds of things. There are in-person and online classes available in every art form, spiritual practice, hobby and sport.

Why not use the back-to-school energy of the end of August to learn something new?

What Do the Pages Learn?

In tarot, the four Pages are students. They may represent the need to learn something, the act of learning something, or a person who is learning something.

What the Pages learn can be determined by the element of their suit.

The watery Cups Page learns about love and expressing emotion.

The earthy Pentacles Page learns about work, money and practical matters.

The airy Swords Page learns about truth, basic knowledge, communication and technology.

The fiery Wands Page learns about creativity, sports and performance arts.

You can perform a reading with just these four cards. Shuffle them, and pick one at random to tell you what type of thing you should next tackle learning!

Five Major Arcana Cards About Learning

There are many cards in the tarot deck that can refer to learning something new. Of course, each card has a lesson to teach us, as well.

Here are five Major Arcana cards that I see as referencing school, learning and study. It’s interesting to see the different types of learning in the individual cards, and see how they compare and contrast.

As you look at them, think about which types of learning are most natural for you.

The Fool

The Fool is on an expedition. He learns through curiosity, experience and observation. His study is not focused, he will learn whatever comes into his field of vision.

The Magician

In a reading, the Magician can indicate attendance at a formal school. The Magician learns through a focused study of his tools, his skills and his abilities.

The High Priestess

The High Priestess holds a book of wisdom, but she also has the ability to look within the subconscious mind, and discover the secrets within. The High Priestess has inner knowledge and wisdom.

The Hierophant

The Hierophant is the keeper of doctrine, tradition, dogma and rules. His teachings are precise and advanced. With focused study of a traditional body of knowledge, the Hierophant becomes an authority in his field.

The Hermit

It could be said that the wisdom of the Hermit combines all the learning techniques of the previously mentioned cards. He has made a journey, he has developed his skills, he has looked within, and he can access a body of knowledge. The Hermit now holds the lamp of wisdom to light the way for others.

What’s Up at the Psychic Café?

This past Sunday, August 24th, we enjoy a conversation with author, Egyptologist and newspaperman Kingsley Guy. Kingsley Guy is perhaps best known for his work with the Sun-Sentinel, through which he has traveled the world and met many heads of state.

Kingsley Guy visited the Psychic Café to talk about his novel of Egypt, “Queen of the Heavens.”

This coming Sunday, August 31, we will feature one of my favorite episodes of Christiana’s Psychic Café, our “Night of 1000 Fools.”

The entire show is about the tarot Fool, and features interviews and art from some of tarot’s most interesting voices, including Val Sherrill, Lisa De St. Croix and Theresa Pridemore.

Christiana’s Psychic Café is my weekly webcast. It airs on the Para Encounters Network, each Sunday at 9 pm Eastern.

Learning Tarot: Knight of Cups

Like the Pages, the Knights can represent young people. Knights can also represent people of any age who are in pursuit of something.

The Knight of Cups is in pursuit of love. The Knight of Cups is the traditional card of the suitor. In a single lady’s reading, the Knight of Cups indicates an impending romance, or a secret admirer.

When the Knight of Cups describes an individual, it may be a very romantic person, or a person interested in matters of love.

The Knight of Cups might indicate a teenager who is very interested in dating.

The Knight of Cups may appear in a reading to encourage the querent to pursue a relationship, or to act in a more loving way in a current relationship.

The Knight of Cups can also predict travel; specifically, a romantic get-away.

The Knight of Cups reminds us to act with love as our priority.

Next week we will meet the Queen of Cups.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card reading this week is the World.

This week, pay attention to the big picture, rather than getting caught up in trivial details.

Now is a great time to think about your long-term goals, and what you are doing to achieve them.

The World reminds you that your potential is only as great as you believe it to be.

The World tells you that your world is in your hands. You have the power to create the life you want.

The World card reminds you that everything is interconnected. Try to pay attention to the ripple effect that comes from each thing you do, and do each thing with a clear intention.

This week, focus on completing projects. Remember that, in a very real way, the world is yours, to do with what you will.
