Trick or Treat?

Many of us have wonderful memories of trick-or-treating our neighborhoods when we were young, and taking our own kids trick-or-treating years later.

Concerns about safety and sugar have added some new Halloween traditions these days, but many kids still have the opportunity to yell “Trick or Treat?” and expect that the answer will be a treat.

This week I’m thinking about the phrase “trick or treat?” on a larger level. Even with divination and intuition, it’s hard to know for sure what’s coming around the corner. It’s hard to know if what comes next will be a trick or a treat.

Sometimes the trick is to find the treat in whatever comes, and to know that even things that are “tricky” can bring us unexpected good fortune.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is the cross-quarter day between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice. In England and Ireland, Halloween was celebrated as “Samhain.” Modern Pagans still celebrate Samhain on October 31st.

Halloween, or Samhain, is the third and final harvest celebration. It is also the “Witches’ New Year.”

October 31st is the time when the veil that separates the world of the living and the world of the dead is at its thinnest. It is thought that the spirits of our departed loved ones can return to Earth for one night to walk among us.

The tradition of costumes, especially ghoulish costumes, comes from this belief. Either folks were dressing up to make the spirits feel at home, or they were trying to hide from those who might come to seek revenge for past misdeeds.

Trick-or-treating started as the practice of leaving treats for the returning spirits in hopes that they not play a trick on you!

The time of the thinning veil is celebrated all over the world. In Mexico, November First is the “Day of the Dead.”

At this sacred time, it is appropriate to take a moment to reflect on your loved ones in spirit, and to feel them close to you. Make an altar for your ancestors and loved ones in your home, or spend some time telling stories to honor the memory of those who have gone before. Know that their love and support is available to you always, but most especially at this time of year.

Trick or Treat Tarot Spread

This is a predictive two-card tarot spread. I created this spread to celebrate Halloween as the Witches’ New Year. You can use it now to predict a few things about the next twelve months of your life.

We know that, in life, there will always be things you like and things you don’t like. With this spread, we will ask for information about one thing in the coming year that will be tricky, and another that will be a treat.

Lay the “trick” card down first, and then the “treat” card next to it. Pay attention to how the two cards relate to each other. You can interpret these two cards on a few levels. They can simply predict possible events and situations. You can also look and see if the cards offer any advice as to handle the “trick” and take advantage of the “treat.”

Together, these cards should give you some indication of the energy of the coming year.

Learning Tarot: Seven of Swords

In tarot, the number Seven can refer to the things that we do on our own; our own courage, our own strength, our own decisions.

Swords, of course, related to the element of Air, deal with our thoughts, and our integrity.

In the Seven of Swords, we see a question of integrity. We wonder what is really true, and what to trust.

Traditionally, the Seven of Swords is the “thieves’ card.” Key words for the Seven of Swords include treachery, trickery, dishonesty, thievery, and lies.

When the Seven of Swords appears, you may be dealing with an untrustworthy person, or a situation that lacks integrity.

The Seven of Swords can also appear to discuss trust issues. This card may indicate an inability to trust, rather than an actual lie.

The Seven of Swords may discuss a feeling of guilt; that one is getting away with something one shouldn’t.

The Seven of Swords might also appear to advise you that some fancy footwork is needed. You may need to be a bit crafty, clever or sneaky to get what you want.

Next week we will continue our journey into the suit of Swords as we explore the anxieties of the Eight.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card Reading this week is the Page of Swords.

This week, pay attention to communication. Now is a time to speak clearly and listen well.

The Page of Swords may tell you it is time to learn something new. You may be studying something, or taking a class.

The Page of Swords may also encourage writing projects, or other forms of creative communication.

If you have a business, now is the time to take your marketing to the next level.

Finally, the Page of Swords also reminds us of the importance of honesty. Speak your truth, and honor your need to be within your own integrity.
