We Gather

At Thanksgiving, we explore the ins and outs of social gathering.

AdobeStock_226180932-2500x1389.jpg

We Gather

Whether we identify as introverts or extraverts, we all end up gathering with other people for a variety of reasons.

We may gather with friends and family to celebrate holidays. We may be part of a spiritual community. We may attend concerts, classes, conferences or meetings. One way or the other, we can’t help but gather with people. Sometimes this can be enjoyable, informative and healing. Other times our interactions within groups can be very trying.

The power of humans gathered together can’t be underestimated. Together, we can create change, uplift each other and bring healing to one another. Or, we can fall into a mob mentality that becomes destructive and hurtful.

Something that is very important to remember when we gather with others is to maintain our own sense of self, even when we identify with the larger group. When we are in a group where we feel we don’t fit in, we need to appreciate the differences between people, and stay strong in our own self-worth.

Many sacred texts speak about the power of people who are gathered together. We all know the strength we feel when we are in numbers, and the joy of finding like-minded individuals to spend time with.

The trick is to not lose our individuality to a group mindset, and to not let any group make us feel excluded or lesser.

The holidays can be a particularly tricky time because there are so many obligatory gatherings. For lonely people, the holidays can remind us of how alone we are.

Yet, when we are comfortable in our own skin, and in our own company, we are free to enjoy the season in whatever way suits us best, or whatever way is possible.

At any time of year, seeking out the company of people who enjoy the things we enjoy is a wonderful recipe to relieve loneliness.

No matter how self-contained one might be, everyone needs people to gather with once in a while.

Although it often seems the internet and social media serve to divide us and separate us, we can also use the internet to bring us together. There are always groups of people meeting to discuss, play, dance or pray. Whatever activity interests you is likely to be available if you look for it.

The people around us can make our lives happier, or more difficult, depending on who they are and how we interact with them. The joy that comes from gathering with the people we love, and enjoying the activities we love together, is something that gives value to life, and something for which to be thankful.

Tarot Fellowship and Group Dynamics

I once had a tarot student tell me that she felt that our tarot friends are our best friends, because we speak the same language. Tarot meetup groups and study groups are popular all over the world, for this reason.

Tarot is also an interesting tool to help us understand group dynamics. Whether you are looking at a family, a church group, a work or school cohort or a group of friends, you can use tarot to help understand how the group can function best, and how the group can support all its members.

You can begin a group dynamics reading simply by pulling one card to represent each member of the group. See how each card describes each member. Then, look at how the cards interact with each other, and see how those interactions mirror the interactions of the actual people.

You can learn a lot from this by seeing who is working well together, and who isn’t.

Once you have gotten as much information as you can from these cards, you can ask specific questions based on what you have learned.

For example, look at the group members who don’t seem happy or don’t seem to be functioning well. Ask questions such as, “What can we do for this person?” or “How can we help this person function better within this group?”

If you are part of a difficult family group, doing a reading like this can help you understand the best ways to navigate your family.

If you are lucky enough to share tarot with your friends, you can involve your entire friend group in an exercise such as this to help everyone in your group feel supported.

Cards for Your Consideration

No one tarot card speaks more of parties and social gatherings than does the Three of Cups. The Three of Cups can address alcohol consumption and communities of women, specifically. Yet, this card can also apply to any happy gathering, party or celebration.

It would be a wonderful world if this card described every family’s holiday gathering!

The Three of Cups often appears in a reading to invite you to a party, or to encourage your attendance at a celebratory gathering.

May your holidays include plenty of Three of Cups moments!

The Serious Nature of Play

This week we explore the importance of having fun.

AdobeStock_284714607-2500x1667.jpg

The Serious Nature of Play

They say that play is the work of children. As we grow, we have to focus more on actual work, and less on being playful. We have so many responsibilities that we adults often don’t make a priority of having fun.

As we get older, we confront more of life’s difficulties. Sometimes, in the face of sorrow, it feels disrespectful and inappropriate to focus on being playful.

I truly believe that having fun and being playful are a necessary part of adult life, as much as of childhood. I believe that we all need to nurture the inner child, and that, even in adulthood, being playful helps us grow and learn.

So often at the tarot table I notice that people don’t make a priority of having fun. Usually, this is much to their detriment.

Some of us are lucky enough to have careers that are fun for us. Even then, though, we need to make time to have fun that doesn’t involve obligation.

We all have different tastes when it comes to fun and playfulness; not everyone enjoys the same thing. Very often, friendships develop between people who have similar tastes in recreation.

Having fun is valuable not only to provide downtime and relaxation. Having fun is also a spiritual pursuit.

Having a playful spirit allows us to try new things without the pressure of having to be talented at those pursuits.

Pursuing fun allows us to explore the world with a beginner’s mind. This allows our spiritual growth and personal discovery.

When we adults recognize we have a lack of fun in life, we need to figure how that lack happened, and we need to make changes to accommodate the need for play.

Sometimes people don’t even recognize what they might enjoy. When that happens, it’s time to try new activities and see which ones resonate.

Recreation is part of a balanced life. Without it, we end up losing a very important part of ourselves.

There are religions that discourage any sort of frivolity, and instead reward only hard work, study and prayer. I really believe those schools of thought are missing an important point.

Some people feel guilty for enjoying life when there is so much suffering in the world. Yet, in order to be strong enough to make a different in the lives of others, we must be able to nurture ourselves. Playfulness is an important part of that nurturance.

Tarot Play

Although we now see tarot as a tool of divination and a book of spiritual wisdom, tarot began as a simple card game.

I was already a full-time tarot professional when I discovered this historical fact. At first, it made me question the veracity of the work I had chosen. Was I wrong to find so much meaning in a simple card game?

Then I realized that tarot’s humble origins make this work even more profound and special. The spiritual tenet of ‘As Above, So Below’ asks us to find the spiritual in the mundane, and the mundane in the spiritual.

It’s true that around the world, especially in France, there are people who play the game of tarot, without thought for its archetypes, symbols or spiritual uses. It’s also true that many of us who use tarot for divination and spiritual growth find ways to play with the cards as well.

I think it can be very appropriate to have a playful spirit in divination. There are also story-telling games that help us learn tarot but are also very entertaining.

When we gather with our tarot friends for study and divination there is always an element of fun to be had.

We can use tarot to help us figure out how to incorporate more fun into our lives.

Simply ask a question such as “What should I do for fun?” or “How can I be more playful?” or “What new hobby should I try?” and pull a card, or a few cards.

The truth is, as much as the study of tarot is serious and spiritual, tarot is also a great deal of fun. And, through divination, tarot can help us figure out how to incorporate more fun into our lives.

Cards for Your Consideration

Major Arcana 0, the Fool, asks us to approach life with a beginner’s mind, and the with playful energy of a child.

The Fool is the star of the story told by tarot. The Fool represents each one of us on our journey through life.

The Fool also represents honoring the inner child.

There are various depictions of the Fool, some more serious, and some more playful. Regardless of the particular artwork, it is always important to keep the Fool’s playful nature in mind when interpreting this card.

Sometimes the Fool appears to remind us to choose to have fun on the journey of life.

What Numbers Mean

This week we explore the spiritual value of numbers.

AdobeStock_160873538-2500x1669.jpg

What Numbers Mean

Are numbers prophetic?

Numbers have always had a significance to us that is more that quantitative.

Consider the golden ratio, the number thirteen, or the meaning of the universe in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe (It’s 42 if you didn’t read the book).

For some, numbers hold prophetic value. Some folks have a ‘lucky number’. Many people see the appearance of specific numbers as a sign of the presence of their angels, or those in spirit. Many esoteric systems include the power of numbers, including, of course, numerology. In numerology, important numbers in our lives are broken down into single digits which both give us information and attune us to specific energies.

In mystical Judaism the practice of gematria assigns numbers to Hebrew scriptures, giving special power to those numbers.

In some schools of belief, numbers have power that can be utilized in manifestation. For example, if you want to attract a new partner, surround yourself with pairs of things. If you want good luck for your children, surround yourself with items in the same number as the number of kids you have.

It is virtually impossible to find a school of belief that doesn’t in some way employ numbers in a spiritual way. Maybe that is because numbers are such an indisputable constant in the universe.

Numbers are assigned to tarot cards, Kabalistic sephira, Bible verses, astrological houses and the letters of the alphabet. Numbers are assigned to us individually based on our birthdate, our name, our phone number, our age and our address.

Take a moment to think about the ways that you think of numbers in a mystical way.

Have you studied any form of numerology, or any spiritual system that includes numbers?

Many people have special numbers that they notice on clocks, street signs, and license plates. People often tell me that they see a certain number over and over again. Some people feel that number means something but aren’t sure what it means. Others have looked up traditional associations for it. Others ask me to interpret it. The thing that remains true is that folks seem to naturally feel that numbers relay a special message.

Perhaps numbers are a sacred language of the universe, and therefore a way for the universe to communicate with us.

Certainly, numbers carry meaning that directly affects our lives. Grades, wealth and health data are all communicated via numbers. It would make sense that spiritual information would be communicated that way was well.

Numbers in Tarot Study Exercises

Numbers and numerology play a very strong role in tarot. Numbers, along with the four suits, create structure in tarot. Numbers can help us learn the cards. Numbers also add to the interpretive value of cards and tarot spreads.

It is very important to understand the value of each number in tarot. It is also a good idea to treat the ranks of the Court in the same way that you would a number. That is, assigning keywords and an interpretive value to each rank.

In traditional numerology, interpretive value is assigned to each numeral one through nine. Multiple-digit numbers are reduced to become single-digit numbers. Reduction is done by adding the digits together. The number ten, for example, is reduced to one plus zero, which equals one.

The Minor Arcana of tarot, however, contains cards One (Ace) through Ten. The Tens don’t mean the same thing as the Aces. Therefore, in tarot, Tens have their own meaning. That is one way that tarot numerology is different from traditional numerology.

The Major Arcana is numbered as well. That is, all except the Fool. Some tarotists assign the number twenty-two to the Fool. Others, me included, prefer to leave the Fool as the sole unnumbered card in the deck.

When considering the numbers of the Major Arcana, consider cards one through nine, that is, Magician through Hermit, as the primary cards. Cards ten through twenty-one, that is, Wheel of Fortune Through World, can be reduced to single numbers. This is a way of grouping and associating Major Arcana cards by number. For example, as we mentioned before, ten becomes one. Therefore, the Wheel of Fortune is associated with the Magician. Card Nineteen, the Sun, becomes a one a well.

Larger-numbered Major Arcana cards will only have two cards in their number grouping, such as Strength and Star, or Lovers and Devil. Earlier ones in the group will have three, such as Magician, Wheel of Fortune and Sun, and Empress, Hanged Man and World.

A great tarot exercise is to create nine groups of Major Arcana cards according to their numbers and decide how the cards in each number group relate to each other, and how they each express the energy of their number.

You can do the same thing with the Minor Arcana cards. This will help you understand the keywords and meanings for each number and rank.

Then, you can look at Major and Minor cards by number together, to see how the energy of each number is communicated throughout all of the tarot cards associated with that number.

Cards for Your Consideration

I asked members of one of my favorite Facebook tarot groups, Tarot Nerds, which specific tarot card they associated with counting, or quantifying something. There were enough votes for different cards to suggest that there is no one card that is universally associated with numbers, counting or quantifying.

Yet, the card that received the most votes was the Seven of Pentacles.

The Seven of Pentacles is typically shown as a tired gardener. In the Crowley-Harris-Thoth Tarot the Seven of Disks is called “Failure”. In this version of tarot, it seems that the garden has withered and there is nothing left to count.

I prefer a more optimistic view of this card. I believe that with hard work, and pushing through fatigue, there will be a time of success, and a bounty that can be quantified.

What is being counted in this card? It is the fruit on the vines as it emerges and ripens? Is it the hours of toil, or the weeks until harvest? Are we counting the time until we can rest?

We might see a suggestion in this card to avoid counting our harvest until it is ready.

Many times, I have seen the Seven of Pentacles as a card of hard work and fatigue. Now I will add to that the idea of quantifying the investment into the harvest, as well as the harvest itself.

Managing Our Harvest

This week we find ways to use tarot to help us understand and manage our resources.

AdobeStock_283813710-2500x1250.jpg

Managing our Harvest

Halloween was originally a celebration of the final harvest, as well as a time of communication with those in the spirit world.

The concept of a ‘final harvest,’ asks us to recognize that sometimes our efforts have finality. Whatever we have grown and saved is what we will have to make it through the proverbial winter. There is a bit of an ominous, anxious feeling there.

Of course, in our modern world, most of us are lucky enough to have food regardless of the season. Yet, this concept of final harvest is a good metaphor for many things that we deal with in life. Whatever we are preparing for, there will come a time when, ready or not, our preparations will either be enough, or they won’t. Either we have enough money for comfortable retirement, or we haven’t. Either we studied enough to pass the test, or we didn’t. Either we edited the book well enough, or it will be published full of errors.

Different personalities handle this finality in different ways. Some people obsess and fret, much to their detriment. Others work diligently. Others act like they don’t really care about what happens.

I think the key to managing our deadlines and maximizing our resources is to be proactive without being anxious. We need to plan for the future without fearing the future. We need to celebrate what we have done, feel pride in our accomplishments, and trust that we have done enough.

If it becomes clear that we will not have what we need, we must avoid panic, and instead trust our ability to solve the problem.

So often we think of our resources only in terms of money, or tangible assets. Yet, our resources also include our ingenuity, the good will we have fostered with others, the good people around us, and the ‘spiritual currency’ we generate when we help others, live with integrity, stay positive and cultivate good relationships.

In the olden days, ‘harvest’ referred only to food, and the possibility of being able to eat. Now, our harvest is not only our money, our harvest is our talents, our time, our creativity and our relationships. Sometimes the things we work to harvest have limitations, sometimes they don’t.

Yet, contemplating this concept of final harvest has bearing on our lives, both in terms of the way we plan and allocate our resources, the way we set our goals, and the way we appreciate the fruits of our labors.

Three Tarot Techniques for Managing Resources

Here are three ways to use the cards to help you manage your harvest. Try them with a tarot deck, an oracle deck, or both.

Relationship with Money Tarot Spread

Here is a three-card tarot spread to help you sort out and shift your relationship with money.

We all heard some messaging about money as we were growing up. Perhaps it was that one can’t be happy unless one is wealthy. Perhaps it was that it is noble to be poor. Perhaps it was that you will never be successful.

Try this spread to help you explore your internal learned messaging about money, and shift into a more fitting relationship with your financial resources.

Card One: My internal story about my relationship with money.

Card Two: How that story has manifested in my life.

Card Three: How I can shift that story to create better flow and happiness in my life.

Resource Management

Not all currency is financial, and not all resources can be stored in a bank. Ask the cards to show you information about all your resources, using a two-card technique. First, ask the cards to show you a resource, and pull one card. Now, ask, “How can I better manage this resource?” and pull another card.

Use this two-card technique as many times as you like to discover and manage multiple resources in your life.

Hidden Harvest

Very often we are not aware of the resources around us. When you are feeling a sense of lack in your life, wether financial, emotional, social, creative or in any other way, simply ask the cards where you can find what you need. Try the follow four-card spread.

Card One: Show me the resources I need.

Card Two: Show me resources I already have of which I wasn’t aware.

Card Three: Show me where I can find more of what I need.

Card Four: Show me how I can cultivate more resources over time.

Cards for Your Consideration

The tarot suit of Pentacles, related to the element of Earth, was originally called the suit of Coins. In some decks it is still called Coins, in others it is Disks or Stones. Yet, the association with the Earth element remains the same.

The element of Earth is related to all physical and material things. This includes our well-being, our resources and our goods.

Because the tarot suit of Earth is named “Coins,” it is easy to think of the cards in this suit as always relating to money. It is true that very often these cards will refer to our finances, and our work to create our living.

Yet, the cards of suit of Pentacles can speak of all resources, not only financial ones. Pentacles cards can refer to our health, our sense of personal security, our home, our family, and our attitudes toward money, as well as our actual financial wealth.

For example, the Ace of Pentacles can be a new job, or new money coming in. Yet the Ace of Pentacles can also indicate the root chakra, and the need to nurture one’s sense of personal security.

The Nine of Pentacles was originally depicted as a wealthy woman secure in her father’s protection. Today, we often see this card as a sense of personal security, being comfortable being single, and being happy in one’s own skin.

The Four and Six of Pentacles can sometimes speak of how we think about sharing resources, with the Six indicating sharing and the Four indicating selfishness. Yet, the Four of Pentacles can often speak of appropriate boundaries within family relationships.

It’s important to understand how the cards of the suit of Pentacles speak about money, but it is equally important to understand the wise range of resource management to which these cards can refer.
