Your Epic Story

AdobeStock_58540950-2500x1668.jpg

As I get older, I find I am much more willing to share the tales of my misspent youth. Stories that used to seem embarrassing or regretful now seem like teachable moments. In many cases, I can remember my stories as glorious adventures, rather than foolhardy risks.

When I see my adult kids having their own epic adventures, I feel a sense of pride that they understand that life is a journey to be fully lived, and that it is sometimes worthwhile to take a risk.

In the healing community we often talk about the way we tell our stories. Sometimes we tell stories of our life to ourselves and to others in ways that make us either the villain or the victim. This sort of storytelling can disempower us and can cause us to stay stuck in negative thought loops.

When we can see life as an epic adventure, however, telling stories of our past, and fantasies for our future, can be healing and helpful.

Epic adventures contain their share of trauma and tragedy. Yet, the focus is on the hero who perseveres, who survives, and who finds meaning in the journey.

We can each be that hero in our own story.

The StaarCorner

“I feel seen and called out…by a beet”. This week I have the pleasure to share with you one of my all-time favorite StaarCast episodes.

Laine Sevante Wulkan and Joanna Salerno joined me for a conversation that went deep into the heart of divination, spirituality, and one of the things that unites all living things, food.

Laine and Joanna are the creators of the Food Healing Oracle Deck. My conversation with them was enlightening and exciting. You can join the fun wherever you get your podcasts, or you can watch the video on YouTube.

Laine and Joanna will be presenting at StaarCon. Come learn about the amazing power of food in our spiritual growth, and purchase your own copy of the Food Healing Oracle Deck.

Telling Your Story with Tarot

Any tarot divination is an exercise in storytelling. Weaving the cards together to tell a story is a tarot skill that comes easily to some, and that some struggle to learn.

The following tarot exercise will help you develop your tarot storytelling skills. At the same time, this exercise will allow tarot to help you understand your own epic adventures.

Pull three cards at random. Look at them and place them in any order to tell a story of something that has happened in your life. Now, pull another card at random to tell you something you learned from that life event.

Shuffle all the cards back into the deck.

Now do the same exercise, but make it be about an adventure you might have in the future. What might be your next adventure, and what might you learn from it?

From Around the Web

I was thrilled to find The Fool’s Journey for Writers.

Here is a succinct take on The Fool’s Journey.

Here, find an in-depth look at how we can interpret the Fool.

Cards for Your Consideration

It is common in modern tarot to learn and consider the Major Arcana of tarot as “The Fool’s Journey”. This is a recent development in tarot understanding, coined originally by Eden Gray in 1969.

In this construct, we see the Fool as the hero of the great epic story, and the rest of the Major Arcana cards as the experiences he has along the way, the lessons he learns, and the characters he meets.

It is possible to continue this tarot storytelling to the four suits and find stories of wisdom as the Fool explores each suit, and each of the Four Elements within the suit.

Tarot is numbered, and therefore inherently has a specific order. This allows tarot storytelling to happen in a natural and obvious way.

When we randomize the cards and perform divination, we use the cards to tell the story of what is currently happening.

The stories inherent in tarot give us spiritual understanding. The stories we find in divination give us understanding of our current circumstances.
