Make It Better

Sometimes an old song just sticks in your brain. This happened to me the other day with “Hey Jude”, by the Beatles. (Perhaps I was anticipating Frank Kwiatkowski’s StaarCon presentation about tarot and the Beatles).

The line I was stuck on was the repeating phrase “make it better”.

I remember being a child and having my mother kiss my scraped knee to “make it better”, and then doing the same with my own children.

Making something better can mean a lot of different things. We always strive to do better, and to be better. When someone is sick, we hope they get better soon. When someone dies, we believe they are in a better place.

We try to do a lot of hard things to get better over time, like diet, exercise, self-study, therapy, and going to school. When we are troubled, we look for short-term fixes to make us feel better right away.

The search for a quick fix can lead to addictions, spiritual bypassing, and other things that make the problem worse. Yet, the desire for comfort, immediate action, and soothing is not wrong.

We all need to have a go-to list of things we can do to make ourselves feel better when something is troubling us. Sometimes it is a simple as a cup of tea, a phone call to a friend, a walk in the woods, a few yoga poses, or listening to a favorite song.

Our divination tools, like tarot, can give us an idea of how to make ourselves feel better, or how to improve a situation. Performing a reading or having a reading with a trusted professional can often make us feel better in the moment and give us an action plan to create lasting improvement over time.

We also want to make the world better. We pray, send energy, donate time and money to worthy causes, and hope we are doing our part. We have to remember that many small things can add up to something meaningful, that will indeed make things better.

Help or Hinder Tarot Spread

Here is a great two-card tarot spread to help you see if a particular action will make something better, or not. This is also a great exercise in reading cards in context.

When you have something you are considering, you may ask if this action will help you, or hinder you. Sometimes an action might be beneficial and a hinderance at the same time! Other times the action may have no effect at all. Simple pull one card for “help” and another for “hinder” and see what you see.

From Around the Web

Here is a smart new blogpost from StaarCon 2022 presenter Mary Ellen Collins.

Amy Zerner’s website shows us her couture and jewelry offerings. Wouldn’t it be amazing to wear these to a tarot conference, or anywhere at all?

Vicki Santell will be presenting at StaarCon 2022. Learn a little more about her on her website.

Guidance on the Journey

Temperance, Major Arcana 14, is one of my favorite cards. In most Temperance images, we can see an angel mixing, or blending something.

In science, a liquid mixture of a minor component and a major component is called ‘a solution’. (One might say that tarot is comprised of a minor component and a major component as well, thinking of the Major and Minor Arcanas.)

A solution is also something that solves a problem and makes us feel better.

We see that Temperance is creating a liquid solution. Temperance can also help us create solutions in our lives.

When you have a problem that you do not know how to solve, imagine being the character in the Temperance image. You might even mimic the body movement of Temperance by standing on one food and using your hands to pour imaginary liquid from cup to cup. Breathe, and allow yourself to feel what it is like to become Temperance.

When you become Temperance, you can imagine and discover the solutions that bring improvement, and make you feel better.
