Interdependence

Two women laying in the sand head to head with crystals between them

You have probably heard the phrase, “no man is an island”. This phrase comes from poet and clergyman John Donne. He spoke these words in a sermon in 1642. All these year later, this phrase still feels important.

No one can exist all alone. No matter how self-sufficient a person is, we all need each other. We rely on farmers to grow our food. We rely on doctors to help us stay healthy. We rely on friends and family to help us in countless ways.

It can be hard to ask for help when we need it. It can be equally hard to know how to help someone who is obviously in need. Sometimes we feel shame when we need to ask for help. Sometimes we feel resentful when others need our precious time and energy.

Whether professionally or personally, we all help each other. We all need each other.

Our interdependence is woven throughout friendships, family units, communities, nations, and worldwide.

When we can appreciate the number of hands it took to allow us to eat a meal, or make a phone call, we understand the web of which we are a part.

On a more personal level, there can be joy in assisting those in need, and joy in working together to achieve common goals.

It is important to be independent. It is also important to understand and celebrate our interdependence.

The StaarCorner

We are happy to announce that Mark Horn, author of Tarot and the Gates of Light: A Kabbalistic Path to Liberation, will be a presenter at StaarCon 2023.

Mark Horn may be the only person who has taught at both the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Readers’ Studio International Tarot Conference.

Mark has been a life-long activist in the post-Stonewall LGBTQ movement. At Congregation B’nai Jeshurun he created a liturgy for an LGBTQ Pride ritual dinner, the Stonewall Seder. This liturgy has been used and adapted by congregations in the U.S., Europe, and Australia.

Mark has studied Kabbalah with academic, religious, and practical teachers of Kabbalah in organizations ranging from the highly respected to the highly unorthodox.

I met Mark for the first time last summer at The Maters of Tarot conference at Omega Institute. Having already read his book, I immediately asked him to present at StaarCon 2023. I am so glad he agreed to share his wisdom with us.

StaarCon 2023 will be January 20-22. Mark your calendar now! Tickets will be available soon.

Two Cards to Understand a Relationship

There are many times we struggle with a relationship, be that a family member, a friend, or a co-worker. Yet, we may also believe that this person is in our life for a reason. We may be interconnected, practically or spiritually, with a need to help one another.

You can use a simple two-card spread to help understand the current purpose of such a relationship. One you understand the purpose, you might find ways to work with the person more easily.

You can also do this reading for another person who is struggling with a relationship.

Let the first card show you the purpose for person A to be in person B’s life.

Let the second card show you the purpose for person B to be in person A’s life.

Storytelling with tarot is a fabulous exercise. Here is a story made up by members of a group that studies the William Blake Tarot.

Guidance on the Journey

The tarot card that is most often associated with sharing and helping is the Six of Pentacles. In this card we see a person who is prudently sharing their wealth with those who are less fortunate.

We associate this card with generosity and charity. We also associate this card with success, and the way success allows us to help others.

When we think about the wealth that is being shared in this card, we might consider that time and energy are also resources that can be shared. A gift of money is helpful, but so is a gift of time, or a gift of shared knowledge.
