The Most Precious Resource
A steampunk woman poses in front of a clock.
Tarot readers often talk about resources. There is a whole suit of the tarot deck dedicated to the element of Earth, which is about our resources. Sometimes that suit is called the suit of Coins, because we so often think about money as our most important resource. Very frequently, newer tarot readers will interpret the Earth suit of the tarot as mostly speaking about money.
Yet, I think time is a resource even more precious than a fat bank account. We certainly spend a lot of time thinking about time! The Bible distinguishes between Chronos (measurable linear time) and Kairos, the fullness of time or the divine opportunity. Philosophers such as Aristotle, Newton, and Kant mused on the nature of time. Is it a structure, a concept, or simply a perception?
The way we perceive time certainly changes as we age. In the song “Invisible String,” Taylor Swift describes time as curious, mystical, and wondrous. I think the concept of time is all those things. Time is something we always live in and with. We are always in a relationship with time. Are we late? Will I miss the deadline? How much time do I have left? How long is this going to take? When will this be over? Is this the right time?
Over the past decade, the concept of mindfulness has become popular. To be mindful is to intentionally focus on the present moment, without ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. This can be a healthy way to reset our relationship with time. Yet it is important to remember and reflect on the past and to plan for the future. Our relationship with time requires us to hold space for the past, present, and future simultaneously. Perhaps that is why Past-Present-Future tarot spreads are so popular!
How does life change when we think about time as a precious resource? I’ve been practicing this recently. I have noticed two distinct immediate changes. First, when something unplanned occurs that involves a pleasant interaction, I make time for it right away, rather than resent having my attention pulled away. Second, I now invest way less time in unpleasant or meaningless interactions.
We take classes and read books on managing our money wisely. I don’t think I have heard of classes in time management outside of the academic and corporate worlds. Yet, from Shakespeare to the Bible to Taylor Swift, there is a lot of material to help us learn to make the most of our most precious resource.

When Will It Happen?
There are countless blog posts from pro tarotists instructing readers on how to use tarot to accurately predict the timing of future events. Over the course of my career, I am sure I have tried every possible technique and found none reliable for me.
It may be that I, as a reader, focus more on Kairos than Chronos. What does that mean? Very often, I ask the cards what my client needs to do to create the conditions that make the thing they want to happen possible.
Yet sometimes a linear timeline is possible to predict. I find that I don’t use a specific method. Rather, I pull some cards and look at them. I am asking the cards for a sort of timeline. I look at every aspect, from the numbers to the images themselves. There is no clear formula for me. Sometimes an image of snow will nudge me to say that it will happen in the winter, or the Moon may suggest that it will happen in a month. A series of Eights may encourage me to think it will happen in August.
I find that if I approach timing with a few rules and a lot of intuition, I can usually make an accurate prediction.

Tarot Cards: Temperance, the Hermit, the Knight of Pentacles, the Eight of Wands and the Knight of Swords.
Tarot Wisdom for the Week
Any of the seventy-eight tarot cards can say something about time. Yet, some cards have information about time baked into their meanings. Here are the cards I most often think of when I think about time.
The Hermit is Father Time. He asks us to be patient. The original image was an old man with an hourglass. The Hermit can ask us to reflect on the passage of time and our own mortality. This is not meant to lead us to wisdom and enlightenment, not despair.
Temperance has three classic key words: art, time, and alchemy. Here, we think of time as an ingredient. That is, part of the recipe to create what we want and need. Every step on the way to a finished product needs a certain amount of time. Here, there is a message of both patience and precision.
The Knight of Swords is the fastest-moving Knight. His presence can suggest that you must proceed with speed, or that things will happen quickly.
By contrast, the Knight of Pentacles is the slowest Knight. He may suggest that things will move slowly, or that you should take your time accomplishing your task.
The Eight of Wands suggests that something is moving swiftly in your life, or that you yourself should be moving swiftly.
Very often, when we speak of time in a tarot reading, we speak of a quality of time rather than a quantity of time. These cards can help us understand the way our client will be approaching time, or the way time will be moving in a client’s life.
