Comparisons

To compare and contrast one thing with another is a wonderful way to study literature, music, metaphysics and spirituality.

Often, we must be able to compare different opportunities in order to choose a next step.

Our ability to make meaningful comparisons helps us define identity, make life choices and understand complex subjects.

Our ability to make comparisons becomes hurtful when we use it to compare ourselves to our perceptions of others.

“Why do all my friends have wonderful relationships when I’m still single?”

“Everyone I know is happy except for me!”

These sorts of comparisons are based only on imagination and bad feelings, and help no one.

There is a great line from “Desiderata,” by Max Erhmann.

“If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

This, That or the Other Tarot Spread

Often, when you need to choose between one thing and another it is helpful to perform a two-card tarot spread, drawing one card to give insight about each option. That way we can compare the energy around each option.

Sometimes, though, at the time of the reading, there may be other possibilities that we have not yet considered. That’s why I like to add a third card to describe other options or considerations that have not yet been presented.

It’s important to remember that tarot has the ability to give us information about things not yet known to us, if we ask the right questions.

Try the “This, That or the Other” Tarot Spread when you are needing to make a decision.

Let Card One represent the energy around one of your options.

Let Card Two represent the energy around the second option.

Let Card Three indicate if there are other options or considerations of which you need to be aware.

The Week in Review

I was happy to see Kevin Hart’s new movie did well in the box office this weekend. Find out what my very favorite Kevin Hart role is, on my Dark Forest blog.

On my Tarot Topics Community Blog I shared some insights into my professional reading techniques.

From Around the Web

From Katrina Wynne’s My Sacred Journey Blog, I think you will enjoy “Why am I Passionate about Tarot?”

Since I quoted it in my opening article this week, here is the full text of “Desiderata.” If you know this piece, read it again. If you don’t know this piece, definitely read it.

From Psychology Today, here’s a really helpful article about toxic thinking. Read “15 Ways to get Someone out of your Head.”

Compare and Contrast Tarot Exercises

There are many ways to use the compare and contrast method of study as we explore tarot. Of course, the comparative study of different tarot decks helps us to learn the archetypes of tarot in a fuller way, and helps us to learn and understand a number of tarot decks. To see how three different decks present the Sun, for instance, gives us deep insight into the full range of interpretations for the card.

Within a particular tarot deck, it is helpful to compare and contrast specific cards.

Go through your deck, and find cards that have similarities in their meanings. What do they have in common? How are they different? How would they complement each other in a reading?

Here are some sets of cards to play with. Explore the similarities and differences in each group.

Three of Pentacles compare with Eight of Pentacles
Four of Pentacles compare with Six of Pentacles
High Priestess compare with Moon
Lovers compare with Two of Cups
Devil compare with Eight of Swords
Death compare with Judgement

Learning Tarot: Three of Cups

Often the Three of Cups shows three women dancing, raising their cups in celebration. Often they are adorned with flowers, and other symbols of fertility.

Sometimes I call the Three of Cups “The Party Card.”

The Three of Cups can indicate celebration and social gatherings. The Three of Cups can encourage music and dancing. The Three of Cups can specify the need for female companionship.

Typically, this is a happy card, indicating merriment and joy.

Occasionally, when the Three of Cups is reversed, or in the position of a challenge, the ill-dignified Three of Cups may indicate too much partying, even to the point of getting into trouble with irresponsible behavior.

Another possibility for the Three of Cups in a less than fortunate aspect might be the need to celebrate more. Sometimes the Three of Cups comes up for someone who is being reclusive or gloomy, to encourage them to do something fun and social.

Fun and frivolity are important, in the right moderation. The Three of Cups often reminds us of this.

Next week we will continue our journey through the suit of Cups with the Four of Cups.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Wheel of Fortune.

What percentage of the occurrences in your life are dictated by luck, do you think?

Is luck random, or is there a Higher Power that turns the Wheel of Fortune, either to bless or to curse?

This week, the Wheel of Fortune asks you to think about luck in your life. Do you consider yourself a lucky person? What does luck mean to you?

This week, the Wheel of Fortune reminds you that whatever goes around, comes around. Here there are three things to consider.

First, whatever you do with come back to you, so plant your seeds carefully.

Second, decide what you control and what you can’t control. Stop trying to control the things you can’t, for we are all strapped to the Wheel of Fortune that is turned by the forces of nature. We are helpless to struggle against it.

Finally, part of the message of the Wheel is understanding that life happens in cycles. Recognize the cycles that don’t serve you, and try to change those patterns.

Whatever you believe to be true about luck, the Wheel of Fortune makes this week a lucky one for you!

Free Webinar

The Four Elements and the Major Arcana

The four elements of life are Earth, Air, Fire and Water. They each have metaphysical properties as well as physical properties.

The four elements correlate with the four suits of the Minor Arcana of the tarot. They also correlate with individual cards of the Major Arcana.

The term “Major Arcana” means “Greater Secrets.” The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana contain the most spiritual messages and lessons of the tarot, and tell the story of our journey through life.

When we learn the elemental associations for each of the Major Arcana cards, we have a clear way to understand these important cards.

This 75 minute webinar will help the tarot student more fully understand the four elements. It will provide a deeper way to comprehend each of the Major Arcana cards. The student will be able to more fully interpret the Major Arcana cards, whether reading for yourself or others.

For Log-in information, visit the event listing on the Continuing Education website.
