Just Breathe

When we bring consciousness to the breath, we harness the awesome power of the mind.

Spiritual girl, space love.

The term “breathwork” can refer to any type of breathing exercises or techniques. In the wellness community, there are specific breathwork practices, such as Rebirthing, and Shamanic Breathwork.

If you go to a yoga class, a childbirth class, or a meditation class, it is likely that your class leader will instruct you in certain breathing techniques.

Whether or not you are interested in formalized breathing techniques, the breath remains an important tool in your personal and spiritual toolbox.

Breathing is autonomic. That is, our bodies breathe without our conscious focus. When we bring consciousness to the breath, interesting things can happen.

On a physical level, mindful breathing can help with pain management and sleep. It can also help us become more organized and productive.

On a metaphysical level, mindful breathing can help with psychic development, divination, manifestation, meditation, spirit communication, and personal healing.

When someone is upset, it is common for us to tell them to take a few breaths before they react. When we need a break, we often call it taking a ‘breather’.

Sometimes the best advice we can give someone is to simply breathe. Sometimes the best task we can assign to ourselves is to take a moment to focus on breathing.

If we do not want to learn specific breathing patterns, it is helpful to simply breathe as deeply and slowly as possible, focusing on the inhalations and exhalations. This technique is powerful enough to bring insight, healing, and spiritual connection.

The more we focus on the breathe, the more we attune to a higher consciousness, and the more we feel connected to an abundant and healing universal energy.

Breathing with Tarot

How can we use breathwork specifically with tarot? Here are some ideas.

To create sacred space before beginning your divination. Hold your cards and breathe, while setting your intention for the divination.

When you don’t understand what a specific card is trying to tell you, take a moment, say the name of the card, and focus on your breath. The meaning will usually become clear to you.

When you want to embody the energy of a tarot card, or bring that energy into your life, hold that card to your heart and consciously breathe its energy into your body, and into your life.

Here is a comprehensive discussion of breathwork.

Benebell Wen shared an interesting blogpost on tarot deck collecting this week.

Can tarot cards be a mechanism for social change?

The Suit of Swords tarot cards.

Guidance on the Journey

Breathing is, of course, how we interact with the element of Air. The element of Air is associated with the suit of Swords in tarot. Interestingly, the suit of Swords contains some of the most brutal imagery and unwelcome interpretations in the deck.

For example, the Three of Swords is a card of sorrow and heartbreak. The Seven of Swords is known as “The Thieves’ Card”. The Eight and Nine of Swords are cards that I have nicknamed “The Sisters of Anxiety and Depression”. The Ten of Swords pictures a person lying prone and bleeding with ten swords in their back.

We need air to live. Breathwork in all its forms is a healing practice. Why then are the cards in the suit of Air so difficult?

Metaphysically, Air is associated with the powers of the mind. That is, our intellect, our thinking, our decision-making, our curiosity, our words, and our integrity. This may be why focused breathing is so very powerful. It engages the awesome power of the mind.

At the same time, we often use that awesome mind power against ourselves, and against others.

When we see the difficult cards in the suit of Swords, we need to recognize our power to change difficulty and heal pain. We use our minds to hurt ourselves, to let others hurt us, and to hurt others. We can also use our minds to heal and create change. This is the message and the lesson of the suit of Swords in tarot.

The Element of Air

This week in the Tarot Topics newsletter we will explore the element of Air. Over the next few months we will feature all four classic elements.

Each of the four elements has metaphysical properties as well as physical ones.

Air is related to mental functions. When we need to clear the mind we like to take a deep breath. We refer to new ideas, metaphorically, as “a breath of fresh air.”

Those born under Air signs, the Geminis, Librans and Aquarians around us, are known for being fair-minded, honest and intelligent individuals.

We begin meditation, healing work and manifestation by focusing on the breath.

Air is the energy of clarity, communication and integrity. Air is associated with the Third Eye, the chakra responsible for our eyesight, imagination and psychic vision.

When we fly kites, blow bubbles and windborne seeds and feel the wind on our face we connect with the element of Air. The more connection we have with Air, the more clarity we have in understanding our lives, the people around us, and our direction.

The Element of Air in Tarot

The suit of Swords is generally associated with the element of Air. Some of the Swords cards show us the result of worry, overthinking, dishonesty and unkind words.

The Ace of Swords represents the source, essence and beginning of truth, reason, logic, intelligence and communication.

There are Major Arcana cards associated with the element of Air as well. These are the Fool, the Magician, the Lovers, Justice, and the Star.

It is a good tarot study exercise to look through the Air cards in the deck and see how each card relates to the attributes of Air; integrity, communication, curiosity, logic, intelligence and clarity.

When these Air cards come up for you in reading, consider the way Air energy is working in your life. Are you worried, or do you have clarity? Are you communicating clearly? Do you know your truth? Do you trust those around you?

Some of the Air cards in tarot have difficult images that reflect the mental struggles we often face. When these cards come up in a reading, don’t fear them. Rather, use them to help you find healing, clarity and truth in your life.

The Week in Review

We had another busy week on our Tarot Topics Community Blog! This week we welcomed a new blogger who shared a poem about tarot.  Check it out, and leave a comment to welcome our new addition!

Joanne Matthew shared a smart post about the choices we make, and how tarot plays a role in that.

I answered a very interesting question about tarot and Christianity in my “Answers to your Questions about Tarot” video series.

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote about April Fool’s Day as a time to connect with the tarot Fool.

On my Dark Forest blog I wrote about a great local band here in Pasco County, Mojo Dragonfly.

From Around the Web

It’s a new month, so here are some April Tarotscopes from Olivia Destrades at First Earth Tarot.

Jenna Matlin, of Queen of Wands Tarot, wrote a very important piece about psychic tools, tarot and intuition. Read “My Intuition is Better than your Intuition.”

From James Wells’ Circle Ways blog, here is a great way to really create a relationship with the Major Arcana of tarot. Read “66 Days with the Trumps.”

Tarot Meditation for Clarity

When you need to make a decision or want to hear your clear guidance, try this quick meditation with the Ace of Swords.

The Ace of Swords is the card of clarity, clear thought and clear communication. You can use the energy of this card to quickly bring the clarity and guidance you need.

Take the Ace of Swords from your deck, or print the image from your computer. Focus on the image and breathe deeply.

Ask your Higher Self, guides, guardians or Higher Power to give you clear direction.

Hold the Ace of Swords to your brow chakra and breathe with it for a few moments.

You should have your answer, your clarity or your direction, very quickly. If it doesn’t come to you immediately, simply proceed with your day. Your answer may come in your dreams, or may be given to you in the hours that follow your meditation with the Ace of Swords.

Learning Tarot: Five of Wands

In tarot, all the fives are typically filled with conflict. This is because five is the number of expansion. We move out of the comfort zone of the four, and are on our way to the victory of the six. That moment when we push out of the comfort zone we tend to be conflicted and uncomfortable.

When the Five of Wands comes up in a reading, I like to ask the client what they see in the card. What are the people doing? Some clients will say the people in the card are fighting. Others will say they are building something. Others will say they are playing. The energy they see in the card often reflects the energy that exists around them.

The Five of Wands can indicate conflict, but can also indicate a creative process.

When you see the Five of Wands in a reading, consider the nature of the conflict, and whether it serves the goals of the client.

The Five of Wands can indicate a group process that is creative, professional or political. As with most group processes, there is bound to be some discomfort on the way to creating something worthwhile.

Next week we will see how the conflict of the Five of Wands resolves with the Six of Wands.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Eight of Wands. Traditionally, this card can predict that you will receive a message, news, or open the way for conversation.

A key word for the Eight of Wand is “swiftness.” It suggests that things will happen quickly and effortlessly. Things that are set into motion will continue forward.

When we look at the Eight of Wands, we can’t see where the wands are coming from, or where they are going. They seem to be coming in for a landing.

If you have been considering a new project, now is the time to set things into motion. The energy of the Eight of Wands this week will help give you the momentum you need.
