Fashions, Fads, and Trends

This week, we are talking about trends and why they matter.

A young, fashionable woman.

Trends aren’t new. I remember my mother talking about the fads of her high school years. Most notable were the poodle skirts and saddle shoes, which were in fashion for a full decade.

When I was in middle school, saddle shoes came back for only a season, but I had to have a pair.

Today, I see social media trends that are hot for about a week and then recede into oblivion.

The things we wear, do, and talk about used to last a decade. Then, it was a year or less, and now, things move even more quickly. Of the things we enjoy and discuss currently, it’s hard to know what will still be remembered or pertinent in a month.

Fads and trends are fun because they unite us. I know that sounds silly, but it’s true. If we all know the same joke, or are following the same story, we feel connected with each other.

I remember the yo-yo trend that hit when I was in fifth grade. Suddenly, we all had yo-yos and yo-yo skills. Big sixth graders who had never talked to me were immediately friendly simply because we shared a trendy hobby. I am sure that a few of my peers enjoy yo-yo-ing to this day, while the rest of us lost our yo-yos as a new trend caught our attention.

Trends unite us and expose us to ideas, styles, and activities that might be only a passing fancy, or that might become important to who we are.

At the same time, fashions, fads, and trends can be expensive, exhausting, and distracting.

It takes courage to resist a trend or to be out of current fashion, but sometimes, that is the right move.

Once we have lived on the planet for a few decades, we can see in our own timeline the personal trends in our lives and the things that became germane to our sense of identity. There are things in life that we enjoy only for a short time, and that’s okay. Other things are eternal.

This is true for individuals as well as for societies. Some things change, and some things never do.

For all of my life, I have heard people speak derisively about fashions and fads because they change so quickly. But that is what makes them so important and so much fun. We can’t allow ourselves to feel pressured to hop on every trend. But we might find new energy, ideas, and community when we do. Something does not necessarily have to be lasting to offer a valuable experience.

Trends in Tarot

There are many trends in tarot art, publishing, and how we think about and work with the cards. However, there are also trends that happen during a tarot reading.

When you work with many cards in a reading, you can see how the cards are trending. This can be a powerful way to find information from the cards.

What are trends we might see in a reading?

The most important are trends of distribution. Do you see cards of the same rank or number or the same suit? Do you see cards with similar images or colors?

The trends you see in the cards can add more to your reading.

For example, if you see a trend of Aces, you may note that many new opportunities are available. If you see a trend of Court cards, you may note that many different personalities are in the mix. If you see a trend of reversed cards, you may think the client is feeling upside down.

Pay attention to the trends in your tarot readings and see what new information they bring you.

From Around the Web

There are plenty of trends in the tarot world. Here are three articles on modern trends in tarot.

Liz Worth reminds us that we don’t have to follow every tarot trend.

Making Magic

There are trends in the magical world, too. When I first began my magical studies, Wicca was the only Western practice available to me. Now, because of technology, we have the ability to study and practice many different traditions. We are also able to see how we may have carelessly adopted practices that were not right for us.

Information technology and social media allow us to learn and study with people all over the world.

During the pandemic shutdown, I led magical ceremonies on Zoom. I had no idea how powerful that would be until I tried it.

One of the things I love about magic is that it is earthy and natural. Yet, technology has a place in magic. During my lifetime, the trend toward personal tech has been the single biggest source of change and expansion in my magical practice. I am sure others experience this similarly.

Of course, the important thing is to learn from all the wisdom you have access to but not believe everything you hear and see. This was true when we learned solely from books, but it is even more true now that there are fewer editorial processes between the teacher and the student.
