Expand with the Number Five
In tarot and in numerology in general, the number Five can be difficult. Yet, the struggles we find in the number Five are necessary to achieve our goals. In tarot, the Fives teach us what it takes to create our success in life.
If you have a tarot deck, or if you get readings, you may have noticed that in most tarot decks the Five cards display a lot of conflict, and often a sense of loss. These are not typically our favorite cards to see in a reading.
When I was first learning tarot, I decided that a good keyword for the number Five in tarot was ‘conflict’. I soon met a teacher who corrected me by sharing the following wisdom with me.
Five is really about expansion. Four your comfort zone, Six is victory. Five is that very uncomfortable place you find yourself in when you have mustered the courage to jump out of your comfort zone. You are working toward your goal but have not yet reached your success.
The number Five tells us that we have grown too much to stay in our safe space of comfort. We must expand, and that expansion is scary. That expansion might cause conflict with others who do not understand our growth or are intimated by our goals.
If you see the number Five, or groups of Fives, as you go through your life, take it as a push from the Universe to have the courage to reach for your goals.
When the Five cards come up in a tarot reading, consider that, even though they are uncomfortable, they can represent motion in the correct direction.
When you know you are ready to grow, use the number Five to support that growth, and to prepare you for the discomfort that can come as you expand to meet your new challenges on your way to success.

Working with the Tarot Fives
Tarot exercises can be helpful in two ways. First, they increase our understand of the cards and our tarot reading skills. Second, tarot exercises may give us an opportunity for personal growth.
Here is a tarot exercise to help you understand the Minor Arcana tarot Fives, and to help you get out of your own comfort zone.
Go through your deck, and find the Four, Five, and Six of each of the four Minor Arcana suits.
Look at these three cards in each suit, in order. Can you see a story of leaving something comfortable, enduring something difficult, and ultimately finding success??
Can you associate the story you find in each suit to a particular time in your life? How does that help you process and understand your own life stories?

The Mighty Power of the Number Four
A deep dive into the metaphysical properties of the number Four is the topic of the newsletter this week.
This is volume 4, issue 40 of Tarot Topics Weekly Newsletter! I thought it would be fun to focus on the power of the number Four.
Four is essentially a number of stability. So many things are in a set of four. There are four seasons, four elements, and four walls to a room. How many sets of four can you think of?
The number Four can be about manifesting something. That is, taking your dreams and turning them into something solid.
The caveat with the number Four is to be careful what you wish for, and make sure it is what you really want.
Those whose life path number is Four tend to be sensible, practical, and pragmatic.
A great deal of power comes from attending to our practical needs. So often people feel that the spiritual and the practical cannot exist in the same space. Yet, they are both necessary, and are dependent on one another.
The number Four teaches us the magic that is inherent in the mundane.
Within the stability, practicality, and responsibility of the number Four is the opportunity for leadership. When we take on the mantle of leadership, we have the ability to shape the future for ourselves, and for our community.
The StaarCorner
Jenna Matlin is a well-known tarotist. She has written two books on professional tarot reading. We are anticipating the publication of a third book on tarot reading, forthcoming form Llewellyn.
We are delighted that Jenna will be presenting at StaarCon. Her presentation is How to Craft Amazing Three-Card Readings. Most tarotists work with three-card readings.
Suitable for all levels, this workshop teaches you how to level up your three-card reading skills with twelve interlocking approaches that create a full and complete session, no clarifying cards needed! Learn how to sweep over your cards back-and-forth while creating layers of meaning, enabling you to wring every bit of information available.
One of our missions at StaarCon is to offer the very best in tarot education. We are grateful that Jenna is helping us fulfill that mission.
Tarot for Magic and Mediumship Hybrid Class
On Thursday, October 28, from7 pm to 9 pm ET, join us for an exciting tarot class.
Tarot for Magic and Mediumship Hybrid Class will be held in person at my office in Palm City, and online on Zoom.
This will be an enlightening seasonal tarot class.
Tarot is a multi-facetted spiritual tool. So often we think only of simple divination when we work with our tarot cards. Yet, tarot is a set of magical tools, and a gateway to communication with spirit.
Tarot readers of all levels of experience will learn new ways to work with tarot in this class. You will explore the cards as tools for manifestation and healing. You will learn to connect with those in spirit using your tarot cards.
Class fee is $40. Get your ticket now!
Design Your Own Four-card Spreads
Since there are so many sets of four in the world, designing a four-card tarot spread is easy.
You might have one card for each element and create card position meanings based on the element. For example, the Air position could answer the question: What should I be focusing on? The Water position could be: How can I have more love in my heart?
If you were to do this with the four seasons, your autumn card might be: What can I do to have a fruitful harvest in my life?
How might you design a spread using the four archangels, or the Four Agreements?
Use your creativity and imagination to create some new four-card spreads!

Do you know your birth number, also known as a life path number? Refinery29 tells you how to calculate it and what it means.
Cards for Your Consideration
In tarot, as in numerology in general, the number Four can refer to stability. The trick is, sometimes stability is a good, joyous, and safe thing. Sometimes, however, stability can create a comfort zone in which we can become stuck.
The Emperor is card Four of the Major Arcana. He can represent stability, leadership, and responsibility. Yet, this card can also represent rigidity.
The Four of Wands is the traditional card of marriage. This is normally a wonderful thing, unless you are stuck in a marriage that isn’t working well.
The Four of Pentacles can speak of good boundaries and self-care. Yet, it can also speak of selfishness and hoarding.
The Four of Cups can advise you to be careful of your choices. This card can also speak of a poor attitude in which you refuse to be pleased with any of your options.
The Four of Swords can advise meditation, rest, and retreat. Yet, this card can also speak of serious illness, injury, or a sense of emptiness.
As in all things tarot, very little is always good, or always bad. If we understand the full energy of a number, an element, or a card, we can use that energy to find our balance, mitigate difficulties, and welcome blessings.
The number Four in tarot, and in life, offers many blessings, as long as we do not get caught in rigidity or fear.

Tarot Topics Newsletter
Volume 4 Issue 40
October 6, 2021
It is what it is, but what is it?
This week, Tarot Topics is all about acceptance, perspective and change!
We are all familiar with the modern mantra of acceptance, “it is what it is”.
Accepting a situation for what it is, without blame or judgement, can heal us, and free us.
Sometimes, though, we are willing to believe that a difficult situation can’t be changed, when, in fact, it can be.
Sometimes, the story we tell about our situation is much direr than the situation itself.
The next time you find yourself needing to say “it is what it is”, take a minute to evaluate what is really true.
First, is your perception of the situation truly accurate, or are you viewing your situation through a clouded lens?
Second, do you have the power to make a change, either in your situation or in your perception of it?
Sometimes it is what it is, and that’s the way it is. Then, acceptance is the key to finding peace and moving forward.
Sometimes, it is what it is for now, and we need to be accepting for now, but there is reason to work toward a hopeful change in the future.
Sometimes, we still need to be in a place of acceptance, but we need to tell our story in a way that allows us to perceive our situation without catastrophizing it.
Sometimes, instead of acceptance, we need the strength to make a hard change.
When I think about all this, I am reminded of the Serenity Prayer.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
When we are struggling to find that wisdom, or to reframe our perspective, to make a hard change or to accept a difficult situation, we can often turn to our divination practice for help.
Tarot, runes, oracles, meditation and other forms of creating divine connection will often give us the focus and insight to help us know what really, truly is.
Tarot for Acceptance, Perspective and Change
There are many cards that can immediately instruct is to accept a situation. There are others that may ask us to change our perspective, and still others that suggest we make changes.
When you look through your tarot deck, which cards indicate acceptance to you?
Which cards indicate the need to find a new perspective?
Which cards suggest that you make a needed change?
Some of the cards I think about include the Wheel of Fortune for acceptance, the Hanged Man for a new perspective, and Death for change.
Within the Minor Arcana, I see the Four of Swords as suggesting acceptance, the Two of Wands as a shift in perspective, and the Six of Wands as successfully making a difficult change.
When you look through your own cards with these questions in mind, you will be surprised with the new insights you find within those familiar images.
Grab your tarot journal and write about the cards from this perspective!

Numerology with Zuri
Number Nine
Hello Bright Sparks!
This week we begin to sort through our boxes of experiences and decide what needs to be kept, given away or tossed out, in preparation for a brand new cycle. The 9 is always reflecting on the past, in an effort to to uncover hidden nuggets of wisdom from old stories. It is the old soul, as it is an energetic blend of all of the 8 numbers that came before it, and in a lot of ways, has much to teach us. This may be why 9s find people inexplicably drawn to them as teachers, leaders, healers or where they take on a humanitarian role to champion for the underdog.
So as a 9, you’re likely to possess a generous and compassionate spirit, with a mind that absorbs information like a sponge. These are also part of the creative numeric triad, so don’t be surprised to find them in artistic or musical fields too. 9s were born to serve on a small or large platform. Whether it’s sculpting, speaking, playing, singing, dancing or writing, they heal through their creative talents and need to share that gift with the world in order to thrive.
However, with each number, there’s also a shadow side and one of the biggest lessons of the 9 is to learn how to let go and get comfortable with change. Goodbyes are never easy for the 9, and if you dig deep enough, there may have been family or personal relationship dynamics that led to feeling abandoned emotionally or physically in their past. This may explain why a 9 empathizes so well with the struggles of others, and it’s their compassion and understanding of those plights and challenges that makes them so relatable and a favorite amongst peers and various community circles.
Whenever you see a predominance of 9s in your dreams or waking world, it’s a sign of endings and completions to come. Nothing lasts forever and you’re being prepared for those endings in order to find closure and make room for something better to take its place. As you release what’s outgrown, you must work on forgiveness and resolution, so you can move forward and not revisit the past at a later juncture.
We can definitely see the soul’s journey of the 9 play out and manifest itself in the Tarot’s Minor Arcana series. The 9 of Swords speaks to the fears of letting go or making waves. So you worry yourself into sleepless nights and remain paralyzed through inaction. But whether you’re ready or not, the Universe will move out of your life what no longer serves and that may bring some discomfort as things get re-settled on the cosmic chessboard. The 9 of Wands, shows the aftermath of this journey, where the man still stands after a series of ordeals that tested his faith and resilience. He learns that life did not beat him, that he is stronger and wiser for the experience. So even though he may have needed to release or move on from a situation, he now knows what to expect going forward and remains cautiously optimistic. By staying strong and rising to the occasion, he reaches a new level of growth and sovereignty, that’s seen in the 9 of Pentacles. She’s standing in her lush garden, self made and proud of her accomplishments. She’s independent and ready to kick some butt if need be. You’re not taking away what she’s worked so hard to build for herself and she doesn’t need your permission to enjoy it. The final card, the 9 of Cups, is that birthday wish manifested. It’s the dream that may have taken months, maybe even years, but it’s finally seen the light of day. Yet, in my experience as a reader, the 9 of Cups is often getting your just desserts in a different form than you anticipated. So be open to how that unfolds or manifests for you. It may not always be in the person, job or situation you envisioned because the Universe may double down and surprise you by taking your life in a completely new direction, producing an even better happy ending.
Some questions to ponder when you find the 9 vibration affecting your outer world are: What do I need to release from my life? Where do I need to create closure and resolution? Who do I need to forgive and find a different way of relating?
This week’s vibrational takeaway in working with the 9 is to explore repairing or healing family conflicts, creating the space for new beginnings and discovering ways to help someone in need in your community.

The Hanged Man
Folks, you can’t make this stuff up! The Hanged Man is really the card I drew at random today. There is no other card of the seventy-eight that is more appropriate for our theme of acceptance, perspective and change.
The Hanged Man invites you to find the enlightenment that comes from dealing with an uncomfortable situation.

The Hanged Man instructs you that, if you can’t change your situation, you can certainly change your perspective by looking at things from a different angle.

Are you a good friend . . . to yourself?
This week, Tarot Topics deals with self-love, self-esteem and self-acceptance. Learn about the energy of the number 2 from Zuri, and join Global Tarot Circle!
Most of us strive to be good friends to the people we care about. We forgive mistakes, we understand unintentional slights, we help out in times of need.
At the same time, we often don’t cut ourselves the same slack we do for the people we care about.
Many of us are focused on self-improvement. To that end, we look at ourselves with a very critical eye.
It’s good to strive to learn, grow and do better. It’s good to be able to own our flaws. But we also need to forgive ourselves as we would our friends. We need to treat ourselves gently.
Part of being a good friend to oneself is enjoying one’s own company. Take the time to do things alone that you enjoy. Read a book, visit the beach, shop, go for a bike ride – do something alone and enjoy your time with yourself.
The more you make friends with yourself and treat yourself as a valued friend, the happier you will be with your life.
Tarot Cards about Your Relationship with Yourself
Tarot can really help you understand yourself, communicate with your higher self, and be a better friend to yourself.
In the context of self-esteem, personal identity and self-love, there are many cards that offer specific lessons and insights. If these cards appear in a reading, they may speak to these kinds of issues, and offer insights into ways to shift your energy.
It is possible to use these cards to set intentions and do magick for increased confidence, personal security and self-esteem.
As you look through the deck, you may find many cards that speak to you of self-love, and issues that surround your sense of personal security. Here are some of mine.
The Aces: The Aces can always speak about “Number One”, that is, YOU! Each Ace may offer advice about ways to be stronger in yourself. Most significantly, the Ace of Pentacles may relate to your root chakra, and therefore your sense of physical security and safety, and your ability to claim your place on the planet.
The Nine of Pentacles: The Nine of Pentacles has traditionally evolved into a card of personal security, safety, self-esteem and being comfortable in one’s own company.
The High Priestess: In her upright or well-dignified state, the High Priestess can indicate a sense of peace and serenity within oneself. Reversed, she can indicate a sense of feeling guilty, or that you are not “enough”.
The Seven of Swords: Traditionally “The Thieves’ Card”, the Seven of Swords can suggest that you feel that you are getting away with something – that you fear you are not equal to your task, even if you are.
The Six of Wands: This is the card of the champion. Upright, you feel you are winning. Reversed, the opposite may be true.
The Two of Cups: Traditionally a card about relationships, this card could advise you to be a good partner to yourself.
The Lovers: Much like the Two of Cups, the Lovers could discuss the way you integrate the different parts of yourself, the way you find personal balance, and your ability to be a good friend to yourself.

Number TwO
Hello Bright Sparks!
Ever have that gut instinct that steers you through right and wrong? That soul stirring intuition that either gives you the thumbs up or down when you meet someone new? Well, that’s the energy of the 2 at work in your life!
This week we begin the journey of understanding the vibrational qualities of the 2 and how it could play out in your orbit. In general, 2s are one of the most emotionally sensitive people, which would make sense that they’d be so in tune with their empathic sides. They feel so deeply and because of that, almost possess a Piscean vibe that soaks up the energies around them, in their quest to be loved and to create harmony wherever they go.
If you want to dive further into the celestial glow of the number 2, think no further than the High Priestess Tarot card. She holds divine knowledge within her sacred scrolls, reminding you that you have all of the answers within yourself to move forward. You simply have to take the time to drown out the white noise and listen to your powerful inner voice, that’s always whispering what you know to be true.
The 2 craves intimacy and connection, so whenever you see a group of 2’s in a card spread, you have to keep your mind open to the possibilities of an offer or invitation to partner up in some way. Or, the layout may be presenting you with a choice of some kind. It’s an opportunity to cooperate and collaborate on some project or venture that’s being offered to you, depending on the context of the question asked.
On the flip side, however, we also have to explore the shadow side of what the 2 may reveal. The 2 energy may not be the person who’s going to get all up in your face and be ready to confront you on something that’s been bothering them. Instead, they may react passive aggressively, or bury the issue under the rug but harbor resentment that they don’t feel comfortable speaking up about it. They’re the type that may lack healthy boundaries and allow relatives to take advantage of their hospitality at Thanksgiving in an effort to keep the peace.
So part of the lesson of the 2 would be to learn how to grow a pair and stand up for themselves with tact and diplomacy. It’s okay to be assertive once in a while, my lovely 2s, we will still love you. I promise!
This week’s vibrational takeaway in working with the 2 is to think about your relationship to yourself, with others and that relationship you have with your intuition. Where do you need to engage in more self love, compromise and balance? Where do you need to show more compassion and support? If you’re being called to build that relationship with yourself, then this may be a sign to build healthier boundaries and recalibrate that auric field from time to time with a sage or salt cleanse.
To love!

Your One-Card Weekly Reading
Ace of Cups
This week I drew the Ace of Cups as our one-card weekly reading.
In the context of this week’s theme of self-love, the Ace of Cups is a clear reminder of the spiritual nature and value of love.
This week, think about the energy of love – that is, the high vibration of love.
Be open to love in all its forms. As you open to love, so you will attract love to you.
Consciously try to act in a more loving way, towards others, and towards yourself.
