Forward to School!

This week we focus on education, including many new opportunities to study with me!

AdobeStock_49429847.jpeg

I know. The common phrase is "back to school", not "forward to school".

It’s that time now, as the season turns, when we all fall into one of three categories. There are those who are on their way to school or actively supporting students. There are those, like me, who long for new notebooks, shoes and a lunchbox, and are just a wee bit jealous of all those students beginning a new academic year. There are also those so traumatized by their own school experiences that they feel relief when this time of year rolls around and no one makes them get on a school bus.

Education, whether formal or casual, is important. Knowledge is power, and the process of learning keeps us flexible and growing. We benefit from the things we learn, just as we benefit from the process of learning.

With the energy available at this time of year it makes sense for all of us to commit to being open to learning, interested in new ideas and perspectives, and willing to seek new information and skills. These are things that move us forward, not backward. That’s why I say, let’s go forward to school!

Tarot makes clear the value of knowledge and education. Many of the Major Arcana characters are students and teachers. The Fool learns through exploration, the Magician learns through the practical study of his tools. The High Priestess learns through the study of sacred wisdom, and by journeying into the subconscious. The Hierophant teaches traditional knowledge, while the Hermit offers deeper wisdom to those who would make the arduous journey.

In the Minor Arcana the Pages are students and remind us to be as well. Both the Three and Eight of Pentacles can discuss professional training and apprenticeship.

At this time when we are all focused on education, I am happy to let you know that I am working on launching my new online academy. Over time, you will have the opportunity to study tarot, divination, psychic development, magick, healing and personal growth with me, from wherever in the world you are. Further in this newsletter you will find a code that will allow you to take my first class at a special introductory rate! Along with my new conference room, this new academy will support me in my passion for education.

If you are officially a student this academic year, may it be a year of growth and success for you. May we all have the resource and power of knowledge that moves us forward.

Introducing Card and Craft Academy

John and I have been hard at work to expand opportunities for me to share the knowledge I've acquired over the past thirty years. The new conference room is amazing, but I want to be able to reach people all over the world.

To that end we are launching the new Card and Craft Academy, where I will be offering a variety of classes in tarot magick, divination, psychic development, spirituality, personal growth and healing.

The classes will be video and text, so you can take them in your own time, at your own speed, and refer to them whenever you like.

My very first class in this new format is called Candle Magick: From Mundane Candle to Magickal Tool. In this class you will learn how to create a candle that will help you manifest what you need in your life or banish what you don't. You will use simple, easy-to-find materials to create something extraordinary!

As we continue to build the academy and add classes, I have a special offer for everyone who receives this newsletter. If you would like to take my first class now, prior to our grand opening, I am happy to offer you a $5 discount! This offer is good for the first 100 people to take the class, so redeem it quickly to make sure you get you discount!

All you need to do is visit the academy and follow the easy instructions to sign up and take the class!

The Week in Review

This week I shared a post on my Dark Forest blog. It's about the way that we tend to recite prayers, affirmations and incantations without really putting energy into our words. Read "The Difference Between Saying and Praying."

Theresa Reed, The Tarot Lady, had an adventure with a baby squirrel this month. You can read about it on her monthly Hit List, where I am honored to be mentioned!

Do children work with tarot? Sometimes, yes! What deck would be best for your child? Here's a great post from Steven Bright to help you decide.

Right on time for my upcoming Major Arcana class, Mary K. Greer has posted this amazing Major Arcana tarot spread.

September and October Classes in New Haven, CT, Madison, CT Tequesta, FL and Palm City, FL

I love teaching, and I love that I get to teach a wide variety of topics in some very interesting places.

Registration is now open for the following September and October classes. In many cases, registration in advance offers you a discount, and reserves your seat.

On Sunday, September 9 at 7 pm I will be teaching “Tarot and the Four Elements” at True Bikram Yoga in New Haven, CT. This is a great hands-on tarot class for anyone interested in tarot, from beginners to experienced readers. You will learn about the power of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, and how the Four Elements influence tarot, and teach us about ourselves.

On Sunday, September 16 at 7 pm I will be coteaching an exciting class with True Bikram studio owner Robin Brace at her Madison studio. Robin is a DoTerra representative. Together she and I will discuss plant magick – that is, metaphysical uses for essential oils. This will include using the oils to awaken intuition, and in working the Law of Attraction.

You may register for one of both classes on the True Bikram website.

After I return to Florida I will visit Dream Angels in Tequesta on Thursday, September 27 at 7 pm for a class in Tarot Key Words and Interpretations. You can reserve your seat for that on the Dream Angels website.

I’ve begun teaching classes in my new conference room in Palm City. The Major Arcana class scheduled for September 30 filled even before I could post it online. I’ve scheduled a second presentation of that class for Wednesday, October 10, 7-9 pm. This is a great class for beginners, and for anyone who wants to learn more about the greater secrets of tarot, the twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana.  Class size is limited; you must preregister to attend. You can sign up and pay by phone by calling me at 561-655-1160, or you can pay online from the event listing on my website.

Holiday Traditions

Whichever holidays you celebrate during the winter months, you probably have particular traditions that make your holidays special. They may be family traditions, cultural traditions or religious traditions. Your traditions may be based on geography. Here in Florida, for instance, many people hold special Christmas barbeque parties. Up north folks don't usually associate barbeque with Christmas!

Our holiday traditions are important to us. Sometimes they unite us as family or community. Sometimes they commemorate history. Always they mark the passage of time. Our holiday traditions are a way of both establishing and preserving identity.

It's fun to learn about the traditions of others, and to share our traditions with our friends. The important part is not about what we each believe, or how we commemorate our holidays. What is important is that for so many of us now is the time of celebration!

Christiana's Holiday Open House Tradition

Over the past eighteen years many of you have had a chance to attend or volunteer for one of my Holiday Open House events.

Last year's Open House at the Harvey Building in West Palm Beach was the biggest ever, featuring twenty-two readers and healers offering services to countless numbers of guests. Together, we raised 600 pounds of food.

In the past eighteen or so years there have only been two years that I have not held at least one Open House during the holiday season. The first was in 2007 as we were preparing to make our move from the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania to South Florida. The second will be this year.

Our move from Palm Beach County to our fixer-upper tiny home in Broward County has been quite involved. We have learned a lot about plumbing and electricity, and we have spent more time in Home Depot and Lowes than we could have ever thought possible.

The joy of living in a tiny home that we are essentially constructing with our own hands is immense.

It takes a lot of planning and preparation to create an Open House event, and so we look forward to starting planning Holiday Open House 2013 early in the New Year.

The Holiday Open House began in the early 1990's with a simple idea. I took a small hotel conference room for an afternoon right before Christmas and invited people to come in for free readings.

When we moved to a large house in Putnam, CT I had my first official reading room.  We held the Open House there and my young children served as hosts.

When I opened my first business location in Putnam I invited other readers and healers to join me, and we asked attendees to bring toys to donate for the less fortunate children in our community.

When I started Tarot Circle in 2000 the Open House became a Tarot Circle event.

Over the years I held the Open House in Plainfield, New London and Niantic, CT and in Mount Pocono and Swiftwater, PA before moving to South Florida and holding it three years in a row in West Palm Beach.

We began collecting food instead of toys simply because the need for food during the holidays is so great.

I have been honored to have so many volunteers at the various Open House events. In Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Florida I have been blessed to know many gifted metaphysical practitioners, as well kind people who have been willing to act as hosts and helpers.

For all of my volunteers in South Florida, be sure that I will call on you to help out in 2013!

For all of you everywhere - please remember those less fortunate than you this holiday season, and make a donation of food, toys or cash with your local relief agency.

I appreciate all of you who have made the Open House tradition so special, and I look forward to continuing it next year.

Your Weekly One-Card Reading

Your one-card reading for the week is the Six of Pentacles. The Six of Pentacles is about giving and receiving. It can refer to an act or attitude of charity. It might suggest that you are successful enough to share with others. It can remind you that if you are in need there will be others who will be able to help you.

Usually, the image in this card features a scale. This is to remind us it is important to give to others, but only to the extent to which we are able. It is to remind us that we should ask for help when necessary, but only to the extent to which we truly need.

This card shows us the true nature of family and of community, and reminds us of the importance of generosity.

An Original Card Spread for You!

You can perform this three-card spread with tarot, or any other divination card deck. I call this the "Checking- In Spread" because it is a quick way to check in on the progress of anything that matter to you; a relationship, a business, a creative project or a healing process, for example.

The shape of the spread is a three-card pyramid, with two card side-by-side on the bottom and one card above, positioned in the middle to make the top of the pyramid.

You can perform this spread for yourself or another person, but you must have a specific topic on which to "check-in."

  • Card 1 Bottom Left: What I have been doing to make this successful
  • Card 2 Bottom Right: What my current focus should be
  • Card 3 Top: The current state of success
