The Conscious Breath

The conscious breath brings us to our intuition, our healing, and our ability to work with energy.

We did an exercise during my members-only livestream on my YouTube channel last week that I want to share with you.

The topic of the livestream was Tarot and Intuition. The exercise was about tapping into your inner voice.

The trick with intuition is this. Our intuition is always right. Yet, we may not always be able to distinguish the voice of intuition from the voices of fear and desire.

The simple exercise we did uses the power of breath to help us find an inner truth.

Here is the exercise for you to try.

Focus on your breath. Breathe as deeply and fully as you can. As you exhale, release worry and anxiety. As you inhale, let your breath bring you to your center.

Now, ask your inner guidance to tell you something you need to know.

Hear what comes to you and write it down.

Once you have returned your breathing to normal, consider the message you have received. A true intuitive message will always be helpful. It may be firm, but it will also be kind. Your guidance may offer you a course correction, but your guidance will not speak harshly to you.

Conscious breathing is the simplest and most profound way to connect to guidance, healing, manifestation, and to the spirit world around us.

Our autonomic breathing keeps us alive. Our conscious breathing allows us to access whatever truth and energy we need.

The Air Cards of Tarot

When we think about the power of the breath, we also think about the element of Air. In tarot, the suit of Swords is related to the element of Air. It is interesting to note that the most brutal and disturbing images in tarot appear in the suit of Swords.

The element of Air is associated with the powers of the mind. This includes communication, intelligence, integrity, and decision-making. It makes sense that thoughts, words, integrity, and decisions would be pictured with upsetting images, since these are the things in life that can cause us a great deal of grief.

The fact that we use conscious breathing to clear the mind, and to engage the powers of the mind, fits nicely with the metaphysical qualities we associate with the Air element.

In the Major Arcana of tarot there are five cards that are related to the element of Air. These cards are the Fool, the Magician, the Lovers, Justice, and the Star.

It is easy to see how the powers of the mind, of communication, and of integrity fit with these Major Arcana cards.  The Star may give us pause for thought, until we realize that the character in the card is not pouring water, but rather is pouring starlight onto the earth.

It is in this card that we can see the highest expression of the healing power of Air, and therefore, the healing power that we harness when we implement the conscious breath.

It’s a new month, so make sure you find your TarotScopes on my YouTube channel! I pull three cards for each Zodiac sign to see what energies will be available for the month. Check out your sun sign, your rising sign, and your moon sign.

Erika Robinson keeps a wonderful divination blog. I was impressed with a recent entry where she frankly discusses some of what it is a be a professional diviner in a world full of shortcuts and trickery.

This article from Refinery29 made me smile.  It is a great feature for a lot of reasons. This is the story of a young tarot reader who tried working a psychic hotline. I did the same thing, back in the 1990s. Her experiences were like mine. Neither of us lasted very long.

Creation and Divination

A deeper way to work with the simple exercise I have shared in this newsletter is to try automatic writing.

Have paper and a pen, in a comfortable space. Begin with consciously breathing. This time, ask spirit to communicate through you. You may ask for a loved one in spirit, or for your angelic guardian. Hold your pen to the paper and stay focused on your breath. You may want to hold the pen in your non-dominant hand.

Allow the pen in your hand to move, but do not consciously write anything. You may move your hand in circles, allowing the pen to scribble.

As you continue to breathe, let spirit guide your hand. Do not worry about what you are writing, just write.

When you return your breathing to normal, read what you have written. Does this feel like an authentic message from spirit?

Automatic writing, also called spirit writing, is an ancient practice. There is evidence of automatic writing being practiced in China during the Song dynasty (960-1279). In the West, we see automatic writing as part of Enochian magic during the 16th century.

In 1918 Arthur Conan Doyle wrote that automatic writing could either be the writer’s subconscious, or an outside spiritual influence.

The practice of automatic writing can be a creative form of divination.

When Your Liability Becomes Your Superpower

How can your liability become your superpower? It is all about shifting perspective, the courage to be unique, and the ability to let the universe be your guide.

In a conversation this week someone said a profound thing to me.

I think my liability has become my superpower.

What a fabulous way to view growth and transformation!

If you think about it, you will see that this happens all the time. The shy, introspective person becomes a successful author. The fidgety kid who doodles on the side of their undone homework paper becomes an artist. The overly sensitive person becomes a healer. The recovered addict finds a new career in helping others find recovery.

Often the thing that is a liability for us is the thing that keeps us from fitting in well with others, with classmates, or with co-workers.

I think we need to normalize the idea that we do not always have to fit in as long as we can hold our own. It is nice to be in a place where we feel like we belong. Yet, when that does not happen, there can be power in being unique.

Wherever we are in life, we will always have deficits, problems, and liabilities. What if, rather than regretting and bemoaning these aspects of ourselves, we could instead think about how these aspects could transform us, and help us find new abilities and possibilities?

This week we are delighted to begin announcing our Friday Intensive teachers for StaarCon 2024. We will start with Lisa Adams, who will be teaching at StaarCon for the very first time.

Lisa, The Renegade Mystic, offers tarot and astrology readings, and life coaching. She teaches courses online, and facilitates rituals, retreats, and sacred ceremony.

At StaarCon 2024 she will teach a three-part intensive called Astrology for Beginners. In this intensive, Lisa will help you become familiar with terms, symbols, relationships, and concepts of astrology. You’ll come to see the patterns and archetypes so that they make sense to you on an intuitive level.

You will learn signs, planets, the elements, and how to look at a chart.

Creation and Divination

In a podcast promoting StaarCon 2021, I had a conversation with Nancy Hendrickson. Something that become clear during that interview has stuck with me all this time.

For Nancy, the world in an oracle.

Of course, Nancy is a practitioner, creator, and teacher of standard divination tools. Yet, she is open to messages from the universe and from the ancestors every day, wherever she goes.

This strikes me as an ongoing creative process of being in conversation with spirit, and being in connection with guidance, every day.

So often we focus on the intentional divination that we do within sacred space. That sort of divination is important, but it does not negate the value of being willing to observe, listen, and interpret what we see around us everywhere we go.

When we are working to transform our lives and shift our perspective, being open to the messages around us can quickly lead us to a new path.

Look for animals, plants, symbols, words, and numbers in your daily life. Use your creative mind to interpret what you see.

Be aware of the possibility for confirmation bias. Practice detaching yourself from your fears and desires. When you do this, you become open to that which can be truly helpful for you.

The messages you receive will be intensely personal. These signs from the universe can help you on your journey every day.

Next week the Tarot Topics Weekly Newsletter will be back to normal, with the regular features you enjoy, and a new feature for 2023.

This newsletter is all about StaarCon 2023, because StaarCon 2023 is what I have been all about this week.

So many wonderful things happened that it would take a book to give you all the details, and that would only be my story. Each attendee has their own story, their own set of experiences, and their own take-aways.

I can tell you this for sure, though. We all made new friends. We all deepened connections with existing friends. We all spent time with people we deeply admire. We all learned new things about tarot, divination, and ourselves.

Although we are already deep into planning StaarCon 2024, leaving StaarCon was sad for me. It reminded me of what it felt like to leave summer camp when I was a child. Yes, it is nice to return to the comforts of home. The knowledge and friendships we bring with us enhance our lives as we go forward. Yet it is also sad to say goodbye to our friends, and to the fun time that could never last long enough.

In my welcome letter in the StaarCon 2023 program I shared some thoughts about why it is important that we gather, and why our gatherings matter. I will share part of it here, with you.

We gather. Whether in person or cyberspace, we gather to learn, to share, to laugh, and to create.

We come from all over the world. We use a variety of tools, and practice in unique ways, each for our own reasons. We are of all ages, cultures, races, and genders. Yet we have one mighty and profound thing in common.

We all commune with the divine. We all seek answers from the universe. We all pursue truth, knowledge, and insight.

We come to StaarCon to gather in this shared, collective energy. When we return, each to our own space, we are better because we have gathered.

Look for the next episode of the StaarCast Variety Show, coming soon, where we will talk about some of the fabulous things that happened at StaarCon 2023.

Our Community Inspirations

There are so many inspiring people within the world of divination. We were lucky to have quite a few authors, artists, and influencers at StaarCon 2023.

With more than a million followers on TikTok, tarot reader Madam Adam is a force of nature.
Tarot Artist Dame Darcy weaves fantasy and beauty into everything she touches, including tarot.

Ciro Marchetti has created tarot decks that have redefined how we see tarot art.

My very first tarot inspiration, back in the 1980s when I bought my first tarot deck, was Mary K. Greer. I remember looking through the small section of tarot books in a local store and finding a book by Mary K. Greer. On the back of the book was Mary’s headshot, and a short bio. I did not buy the book that day, but I spent some time looking at Mary’s picture. As I did, I thought, well, if this nice, normal-looking person could find wisdom from the cards and share that wisdom, maybe I could as well.

Having Mary K. Greer as a headlining presenter at StaarCon 2023 was a dream come true for many, especially me.

Throughout our work with tarot, we will have many who inspire us through their art, through their words, and through their wisdom.

The Week in Review

Now that I am back in my office, my regular schedule of YouTube livestreams will return, so make sure you join me there.
