Lessons in Optimism
I choose to be optimistic about the year ahead, and I choose optimism as a practice. Here's why.
Whoops! I goofed. Looking for this week’s newsletter?
Read Good Fences for January 15th.
While many are entering this new year with some trepidation, I am actively optimistic. Although I don’t think false hope is helpful in any situation, I do not believe optimism is ever false hope. So, what is the difference between false hope and optimism?
False hope happens when we refuse to see and accept difficult circumstances. False hope keeps us from making good plans in the face of tragedy. False hope leads to anger and regret. False hope is based on denial.
Optimism, on the other hand, is a practice. With optimism, we can prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
One of the best lessons in optimism I ever had was from my mother, just after she received a devastating medical diagnosis. Here is what she told me. She wanted to live to be able to travel and have fun, and she looked forward to dancing at her young grandchildren’s weddings. But if she didn’t live, that would mean she would be with God and with my father, who had passed just two years earlier. Either way, she was fine.
I do not think I have ever seen a human, before or since, process a life-changing diagnosis with such optimism. In truth, it reminded me of the last scene and closing song of the Monty Python movie Life of Brian, where we are comically and sacrilegiously encouraged to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”
In retrospect, I learned a lot from my mother that day. I learned that we can fight for what we want, accept that we might not get it, and be okay with whatever happens.
What helped my mother in the face of her impending mortality was her spiritual faith. I have seen spiritual faith bring healing, peace, and joy, and I have seen spiritual faith bring torment and oppression. The outcome of faith depends on how your spirituality is expressed and the dogma you choose to accept. If your faith helps you be realistically optimistic, your faith is helpful. If your faith discourages you from optimism or encourages spiritual bypassing, your faith is likely doing you more harm than good.
Realistic optimism and positive thinking allow us to live the best way possible. My mother proved that we can be optimistic even in dire situations and that realism and optimism should co-exist.
My mother died two decades ago. Yet, her lessons in optimism guide me now. This is another reason to be optimistic, as it proves our lasting positive impact on those around us, even long after we leave.

When Tarot Should Not Be Optimistic
I love to say that there are no bad cards in tarot. The Tower can be just as helpful as the Ten of Cups. Yet, the interpretation of the cards comes from us, not from the cards themselves.
The recent YouTube Short I shared was that tarot should never be interpreted to predict a happy outcome for a brand-new relationship. The cards might give a hard no or a maybe, but never a yes for happily ever after.
This took me a long time to learn. There are certainly cards that are optimistic for love and romance. Yet, those cards can reflect the new relationship energy as easily as they can make a happy prediction, and it is impossible to tell the difference between new relationship energy and lasting love, in the cards and in life.
Why is this?
It has to do with the magic of love itself. Something so magical is never entirely predictable. Beyond that, love cannot grow based on expectations and predictions. Love grows based on compatibility and choices. The cards can help us assess compatibility and make good choices. But if we believe there is some spiritual force holding us together, we won’t do the necessary work that will keep us together. And if a reader tells us that the Two of Cups that appeared a month into our relationship means that we are meant to be together, we may be confused and upset if that relationship ends a week later.

What Should We Do in 2025?
This is the space where, for the past year, we have been discussing magic and how to use it in our practical lives. The previous year, this was a spot to celebrate and encourage creativity.
Over the years, we have done one-card readings in this spot. We have also explored all seventy-eight cards of the tarot and the thirty-six cards of the Petit Lenormand.
What would you like to see in this spot for 2025? Please send me an email and let me know!
Look for the first edition after StaarCon!

The Tincture of Time
Is the best action no action? Perhaps time is what you need.
Doctors use the expression ‘the tincture of time’ as a way of advising a patient to wait and see if a medical condition changes or gets better on its own. I think it is such a clever expression that we in the metaphysical and spiritual community should adopt it. There are many times it makes sense to be present, attentive, and clear about your goals while doing nothing.
We live in a society where the most normal and comfortable solution to any situation is to take intentional action. It is important to remember that there are times when the best action is no action.
It takes wisdom to discern when the tincture of time is best applied, and for how long. It also takes patience. Anxiety can drive us to want to do something right now, when the best action is to wait.
A conscious decision to let some time pass and then reevaluate is not avoidance. In some circumstances, the strongest and smartest action is non-action.
The StaarCorner
StaarCon 2023 will be our third annual conference. Each year we have grown, and StaarCon 2023 will be our biggest and best event yet. We have fifty presenters for StaarCon 2023. Most of them will be presenting from the hotel in West Palm Beach.
This year we are taking our tech to the next level. For those joining us online or in person this will mean fewer technical difficulties. This will mean better recordings during the AfterGlow.
Those attending StaarCon in person will experience better sound and better visuals than ever before.
Many conference teachers use a presentation that is projected on a screen. So often, even with the room lights dimmed, the screen is a bit washed out and hard to see.
We are using digital screens at StaarCon 2023 so that all presentations will be crisp and clear, whether you are attending in person or from home.
Since we are a hybrid conference, a few of our presenters will be teaching from their homes, rather than presenting at the hotel. We are excited to show those presentations in full detail on our digital screens.
We are happy to give you an exciting, immersive conference experience, whether you join us in person in West Palm Beach or online on Accelevents.
Act or Wait?
Is it best to use the tincture of time? A simple tarot reading can help you decide.
Think about your situation. Shuffle your cards. Say, this is what happens if I do nothing right now and pull a card. Then say, this is what happens if I take an action right now and pull a card.
Which card seems better to you? What other information about your situation can you glean from these two cards?
If these two cards do not offer enough information, ask the same questions again, and pull two more cards, making two piles of two cards each. Combine the meanings of the two cards in each pile and see if you have more clarity. You can do this a third, or even a fourth time, if necessary, always combining the cards in each pile. Eventually the answer will become clear.

Guidance on the Journey
Which tarot cards might suggest that the best solution is the tincture of time?
There are many tarot cards that reference time, and that speak of a quality of time. That is, cards that advise quick actions and cards that say that things need to go slowly.
For me, the card that most clearly suggests the need to wait patiently is the Hermit.
The Hermit can be a card of loneliness. This card can reference advanced education.
The Hermit is the archetype of Father Time. We usually see the Hermit holding a lantern. Yet, the original Hermit held an hourglass.
The Hermit may caution us to use patience. The Hermit may suggest that we use time wisely. The Hermit may tell us that things will take time to resolve.
When you see the Hermit in a reading, ask yourself if the tincture of time is an appropriate solution.

Allowing Happiness
We can give ourselves permission to be happy without guilt. We must know that happiness can coexist with sorrow.
We all know so many proverbs about happiness. Some feel trite, others feel like deep wisdom. When know that happiness is an inside job. We know that happiness is the byproduct of a life well-lived. We know we have the right to pursue happiness.
One thing that is true about happiness that we do not often hear is that we must give ourselves permission to be happy. To be happy, we must allow ourselves to be happy. This can be difficult for so many reasons.
We must allow ourselves to be happy when our circumstances are not what we want them to be. We must allow ourselves to be happy as we recover from grief and loss. We must allow ourselves to be happy even if others around us are not happy.
Another truth about happiness is that it sometimes comes in single moments. We might have a moment of happiness followed by a moment of grief followed by a moment of frustration. We humans are multi-dimensional. We can hold space for many kinds of feelings all at once. Sometimes those feelings seem to contradict each other.
The way to be happy in the midst of sorrow is to allow your happiness and your sorrow to coexist within you.
Sometimes we feel guilty for allowing our own happiness. Of all the feelings we must experience, and all the feelings we should allow, guilt is usually misplaced. No matter the situation, we all deserve a few moments of happiness in our lives.
On a spiritual level, the ability to be happy in a difficult world may be a purpose of our human existence. Finding happiness is a step toward spiritual enlightenment.

Allowing Happiness with Tarot
So often when we are upset, we will say “How can I be happy when this has happened?”
This is a perfect sort of question to ask tarot.
When you are seeking your happiness, processing grief, or dealing with upset, tell it to your cards! Ask your cards questions that will help you to process your feelings and allow happiness.
The very process of formulating questions for the cards can help you get a handle on your feelings. Contemplating the images of the cards you draw can help you understand your feelings, and access your inner joy.

Guidance on the Journey
Which tarot cards specifically speak of happiness? The Sun can be a card of joy and success. The Star and the Nine of Cups can speak of wishes fulfilled. The Three of Cups and the Four of Wands can speak of celebration. The Six of Wands speaks of Victory. The Ten of Cups can be about a happy family.
Is there a particular card that makes you think of happiness?
That so many cards can speak of things that make us happy suggests to me that there are many roads toward happiness, and many things in which we can find joy and satisfaction.
There are many flavors of happiness. The feeling of victory in the Six of Wands is very different than the party we see in the Three of Cups, for example.
When we compare and contrast the different ways happiness appears in the cards, we understand the nuances of tarot, as well as different aspects of happiness.

Connecting with Your Inner Child
Inner child work helps us to heal from early trauma. When we connect with our inner child, we can remember who we are, and move forward with the energy that made us joyful in your youth. We can move forward without the burden of our traumas. Tarot can help us in this process.
In modern psychology, ‘inner child work’ is an approach created by Carl Jung. With inner child work we recognize childhood trauma in order to heal as adults.
Most people realize that many of our fears, difficulties, and unpleasant patterns in our adult lives stem from what we learned, witnessed, and experienced during childhood. I often say that many of us spend most of our lives recovering from the first twenty years.
Those who grew up in seriously dysfunctional families, or who had health issues or upheaval due to tragedy are aware of their childhood trauma. Those who had more idyllic childhoods often do not recognize that they, too, have childhood trauma. They, therefore, may find it harder to do the inner child work that could help them in their adult lives.
I also believe that we can connect with our inner child to find our sense of personal identity, authenticity, and purpose by identifying the things we naturally did and enjoyed as children.
So many people I speak with are longing to understand who they are, what makes them happy, and what makes them feel that they are living a meaningful and purposeful life. I believe that inner child work can help all of us remember who we are.
There are many ways to do inner child work. You can engage a therapist to help you. You can write your inner child a letter. You can do a meditation where you communicate with your inner child.
Many of us in the divination community are exploring ways that divination can assist us as we work to connect with, and give voice to, the inner child.

Giving Voice to Your Inner Child
One way to do inner child work with tarot is to allow your inner child to speak through tarot.
You can do this simply by asking the right questions and interpreting the card that appears in the context of that question.
Here are some questions to get you started.
What is a childhood trauma that needs to be healed?
What is something my inner child wants me to know?
What is something I enjoyed as a child that has become an important part of my identity?
How can I be more playful?
How can I honor my inner child at this time?
See Me in the Northeast
I will be available for private readings by appointment in Madison, Connecticut, and house calls and psychic house parties in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York, beginning May 26 and ending June 5. To schedule with me, please call or text 561-655-1160.

Guidance on the Journey
Which tarot cards might instruct us to work with our inner child, to honor our inner child, or to listen to our inner child?
In context, any tarot card might give voice to the feelings and needs of the inner child. Yet, there are a few cards that could appear in any reading, at any time, and beckon you to do the work to connect to your inner child.
Here are some of them.
The Fool asks you to honor your inner child.
The Sun asks you to be fearless in your joy, just as a child does.
The Pages ask you to remember the desires of your youth, and who you have always been.
The Six of Cups asks you to remember and revisit your childhood.
The Ten of Cups and the Ten of Pentacles can speak of your family, and your childhood home.
