The Plan-Procrastinate Cycle
This week, a tarot reading taught me some things we all need to know. It's hard to get things done, and here is a reason why.
I learn so much from reading tarot for others.
Last week, a subscriber on my YouTube channel who is a student in college asked a question about procrastination. As expected, what I saw in the cards was helpful to that person. What happened unexpectedly is that the cards gave insight that can be helpful to us all.
The question was about procrastination. What I saw in the cards was a pattern of creating plans to accomplish tasks but failing to follow through with them. This felt all too familiar. Here is what many of us seem to do.
We feel anxious because we have so much to do, so we make a detailed plan to do our work. Once that plan is made, our anxiety is assuaged. The fact that we have a plan makes us feel that we are on top of our game.
When it comes time to execute the plan, we procrastinate. That procrastination may be borne of fatigue, perfectionism, or fear of failure. When we fail to complete our plans, anxiety returns, even stronger than before. For some, the returning anxiety is accompanied by self-loathing, shame, and self-recrimination, as well as fear of the real consequences of not doing our work.
Have you ever been trapped in a plan-procrastinate cycle like this? What can we do to break out of it?
I think the first step is to release self-shame. This is not a manifestation of laziness or stupidity. In fact, it may be a very normal part of human existence.
The second step is to identify the level to which anxiety may be clinical. Is it time to actively seek treatment or solutions for anxiety?
The third step is to stop responding to feelings of anxiety by promising yourself that you will do more and better. Find different things to tell yourself to make that anxiety settle down. Find activities such as deep breathing or taking a walk to help slow racing thoughts.
The fourth step is to directly face your relationship with the tasks at hand. What makes it hard to do these tasks, really?
If you can approach this self-inquiry with lots of curiosity and no shame, you will find your answers, and those answers may break your cycle.

Tarot to the Rescue!
How can we use tarot to help break a cycle of procrastination?
Tarot helps us understand ourselves. Tarot offers solutions.
If you are having difficulty getting yourself to do what needs doing, it’s time to ask tarot why. Then, it’s time to ask tarot for solutions.
Questions such as the following can be helpful.
Why am I feeling this way?
What am I truly feeling?
What is true about my ability to accomplish these tasks?
What could make doing this work more manageable for me?

Making Magic
What magic could we do to assist with ending a cycle of procrastination and shame?
I love candle magic for this sort of thing.
There are many traditions of candle magic. You can create a candle by choosing a colored candle, carving your intentions into it, and anointing it with oil. Or, you can purchase a dressed candle.
In my opinion, a good candle color for this would be yellow, orange, or red. If you are purchasing a magical candle, one that is meant to bring confidence would be good.
As you burn your candle, picture all your fears, shame, and worry being burned away. Let the flame increase your confidence and ability to accomplish your goals.

We All Feel Overwhelmed Right Now
Have you noticed that everyone seems totally overwhelmed at the moment?
This is my current working theory. Whether the cause is astrological, economic, societal, or some combination, every single one of us is feeling, at certain moments, that life is moving just a bit too quickly and demanding just a bit too much.
Perhaps we are overwhelmed by the luxury of options and fearful of choosing the wrong things. Perhaps our responsibilities feel daunting. Perhaps we are creating something wonderful and worried about our ability to pull it off. Perhaps life has dealt us some heavy blows, and we are struggling to adjust.
The feeling of overwhelm can happen for numerous reasons. We can be overwhelmed with possibilities as well as with limitations. Yet, no matter the cause, overwhelm rarely feels good.
When we recognize the feeling of overwhelm within ourselves, it is time to evaluate our situation and make adjustments. Those adjustments may be of schedule, expectations, attitude, or some combination thereof.
It is vital to recognize that if we are overwhelmed, we need grace from ourselves and others while we catch our breath. At the same time, we need to have empathy for others who are likely feeling equally overwhelmed. When we respond to others with the same patience, grace, and kindness that we ourselves need, we make the world run a little better for everyone.
Social strategists, politicians, and social media influencers have plenty of theories about why life feels so stressful right now. I suspect that life on planet Earth has always been stressful. That we have time to notice and discuss our stress is probably evidence that the basic tasks of daily living are getting easier overall. If we have time to think about things, we also have time to stress about things.
Our society glorifies being busy yet shames being stressed. We are praised when we make difficult things look easy. We are never supposed to let anyone see us sweat. It may be that some of our current overwhelm comes simply from the task of trying to appear unbothered.
Perhaps part of the grace we need to give ourselves and others is the freedom to be authentic, even when we feel overwhelmed.
I think that the most important tools we have to combat feelings of overwhelm are patience, grace, and perspective. We can use these tools for ourselves and share them with others.
While handling stress better doesn’t usually change stressful situations, it does make a huge difference. When we can handle the stress of life more deftly, we have more mental space to find better solutions to reduce our feelings of overwhelm.

Solving Overwhelm with Tarot
Which tarot cards can most clearly speak of overwhelm? For me, the Ten of Wands screams overwhelm, as do the Nine of Wands and the Nine of Swords.
What can we do when our cards tell us we are overwhelmed?
Sometimes, the remedy is in the card itself. For example, in the Waite image of the Ten of Wands, there are obvious solutions to the problem. We could put down some of what we are carrying. We could ask someone for help. Or, we could see the town ahead and decide we can carry the load until we reach the town.
When we imagine ourselves to be the characters in the cards, we can often find solutions to the very problems of which the cards speak.
Of course, we can also ask questions of the cards to help us find the practical, spiritual, and emotional solutions we need. Those questions can help us prioritize our task list, recruit others to help us, and find new perspectives.

Making Magic
There are simple magical things we can do to combat feelings of stress and overwhelm.
For me, all magic comes from the Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. An intentional momentary connection with any element, either symbolic or literal, can make a huge difference.
Connect with Earth by going outside and feeling your feet on the ground. Spend time in nature. Or, perform a grounding meditation with a focus on your root chakra.
Connect with Air by going outside and blowing bubbles or feeling the breeze on your skin. Or, simply take several deep, cleansing breaths and consciously breathe your stress out of your body.
Connect with Fire by burning a candle and focusing on the flame to calm and inspire your mind. Or, turn your attention to your solar plexus chakra and find inspiration from your internal flame.
Connect with Water by going to the beach, a river, or a lake. Or simply take a bath or shower or drink a glass of water. As you connect with water, let the energy of Water bring you healing.

When the Hard Way is the Right Way
Don't let a difficult path discourage you from achieving your goals.
I have a friend who teaches yoga. One of her oft-used expressions is ‘the hard way is the right way’. Sometimes I agree with this, sometimes I don’t.
I think there are times when we make things harder than they need to be. We do this by overthinking. We tell ourselves narratives about our lives that cast us as the villain of our own life story.
Yet, she definitely has a point, especially when it comes to physical exercise, like yoga or strength training. The best form and the correct postures are usually much harder than the positions we resort to that end up cheating us out of the full benefit of the exercise. This is a good analogy for something that happens in life.
Sometimes the path to a worthy goal is treacherous and difficult.
When we are working to achieve a goal and discover that the path is hard, it is a comfort to know that the hard way is indeed the right way. Persevering through difficulty can lead to success.
This is counter a great deal of spiritual thinking which suggests that if your path is correct you will walk it with ease. Often, nothing is further from the truth.
Something I find myself saying to people who are working to live a life less ordinary and achieve tremendous goals is this. If it were easy, everyone would do it.
Sometimes there will be synchronicities and things that fall into place as we venture on a new path which we interpret as our angels being on our side, or the wind being at our back. We might rightly see this as proof that the Universe supports what we are doing, we are living our purpose, and on the right track.
Many times, though, the opposite does not hold true. Sometimes the Universe will put up stumbling blocks for us to solve along the way. This might be to strengthen us for the tasks we must face in order to be successful. Perhaps we have to work hard and navigate difficulties to prove to ourselves that we really want this success. Maybe pushing against obstacles will, in the end, help us to meet the lofty goals we have set for ourselves.
Often, even when we face these difficulties, we can still find those synchronicities and signs that help us know the Universe is with us along the difficult path.
When the goal you have set for yourself seems out of reach because of the twisty path you will have to traverse to get there, you might need to look at things a different way.
Perhaps the path is hard because the hard way is the right way.

Tarot for When the Path is Hard
When the path we have laid out for our success becomes difficult, we often wonder if we are indeed on the right path, or if there is something we can do to make the path easier.
Tarot is the perfect tool to help us answer these questions.
Often a conversation with the cards, or a tarot dialogue, is the right way to get a clear picture about the feasibility of your project, and the way forward.
Here are some examples of the questions you can ask about your path, your purpose and your plans.
What does my ultimate success on this path look like?
What can I do to more easily achieve my goals?
What is the meaning of the difficulties I am facing?
What is something I need to know about the goal I have chosen?
How can I know that this is the right path for me?

Cards for Your Consideration
We often see the Ten of Wands as burdens we are carrying unnecessarily. Yet, sometimes this card can reveal the hard path to a great reward.
The suit of Wands relates to Fire. Fire can be about our motivation, our passions and our creativity. The suit of Wands can depict the story of the artist, the entrepreneur, or the activist. The suit of Wands can tell the story of those who take a difficult path to achieve their dreams.
When we see the character in the Smith-Waite Ten of Wands, we see he is carrying a heavy load all by himself. Yet, he is carrying it as if it were a bunch of balloons.
Off in the distance, we see a town. Perhaps he is carrying his bundle into the town to sell it and create his success.
When we agree to carry something heavy in order to achieve a noble goal, the Ten of Wands may tell us we are on the right path.

Have a Light Heart in a Heavy World
I will be in the Tampa Bay Area this weekend. This week, the focus of our newsletter is finding joy in difficult times. Try a new tarot spread, and don't miss our meetup in Lutz!
Let’s face it. Life can be difficult. Whether we focus on what goes on in our immediate lives, our local communities, or the larger world, there are always many reasons we might worry or feel despair.
Yet, when we are weighed down with worry and despair, we can lose sight of the joys that life can offer. When we catastrophize the difficulties or stay focused on our victimhood, we become powerless to see the brighter side of things.
When we want to make a difference in the world around us, we need to be aware of the problems that need fixing. Yet, when we give those problems the power to weigh us down, we lose our power to create positive change.
Some people find solace in denying that problems exist. This tends to be an ineffective solution in the long run.
We need to find a way to acknowledge our problems, and not let that acknowledgement keep us from our joy. It’s a balancing act, for sure.
Whether we are confronting a personal problem or a planetary one, the steps for finding that balance are clear.
The first step is to acknowledge the problem, and authentically experience our emotions about it.
The second step is to decide if we have any immediate practical power to solve the problem or contribute to the solution. If we do, we must take those actions. If we don’t, we must recognize that when we have no practical action, we can always take a spiritual action.
Prayer, manifestation and magic are real energies that really make a difference. This means that we are never confronted with a situation where we are truly powerless.
Once we take whatever action is possible and necessary, it’s time to release our upset and anxiety, and get to the business of finding our joy.
Sometimes we feel guilty for feeling joyful in difficult times. Yet, I think we actually have a responsibility to access our joy and gratitude always, and especially in the face of difficulty.
My Tampa Tarot Tour Happens This Weekend
I am so excited to be headed back to the Tampa Bay Area this Friday! I will be there through Monday.
I still have a few openings if you would like to book me for a house call, psychic house party, or if you would like to schedule to see me at my AirBnB in Wesley Chapel.
You can call or text me at 561-655-1160 for more information, or to schedule.
I hope you will plan to join us for our tarot meetup at Panera Bread in Lutz on Sunday at 3 pm. You can get more information, and download your free ticket, on Eventbrite.
Joyful Problem-Solving Tarot Spread

Lay the cards out in whatever pattern you like.
Card One will help you acknowledge the problem.
Card Two will help you process your emotions around the problem.
Card Three will offer practical solutions and actions you can take.
Card Four will give insight into spiritual solutions and actions for you to take.
Card Five will help you release your worries.
Card Six will help you to find your focus on joy and gratitude.
The efficacy of this spread will depend on your ability to interpret the cards that come up in the context of their positions.
Use this spread to help you find practical and spiritual solutions, and to help you keep your heart light, even when the world feels heavy.

Cards for Your Consideration
This week let’s consider a card that typically speaks of carrying a heavy burden. The Ten of Wands shown here is from the Universal Waite Tarot.
Very often, this card asks us to examine the burdens we are carrying, be they sorrow, worry, or responsibility. Do we need to carry these burdens? Is it time to release some of them, or to delegate some responsibility?
I like to look at the way the person is carrying the wands. No one could really carry a bundle of big sticks this way. Truly, it looks as if he is carrying a bunch of balloons! It is as if there is an invisible spiritual force helping him lift up his burden.
I also notice there is a town in the distance. Perhaps he will carry this bundle to town, and there he will be able to put it down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to carry a heavy weight for a while. Other times, we choose to weigh ourselves down when we needn’t.
This card asks us to consider whether our burden is appropriate. If it is, this card assures us of our ability to handle that burden for as long as we must, and promises us rewards in the end.
