The Awkward Number Five
It is impossible to achieve success without take a leap of faith and courage.
This week our newsletter is Volume 5, Issue 25. I thought it would be fun to discuss the energy of the number 5 in honor of that milestone.
Five, in tarot, is an awkward number. To make friends with the Five cards we need a lot of nuanced thinking, and a lot of faith and courage.
When Five is your personality number, you might be social and fun-loving, but you could also be very changeable.
The number Five is associated with Mercury, so we can see the importance of communication and social connections, but also the possibility for tricky behavior.
If you are seeing multiple Fives around you, interpret this as a head-up for changes that can lead you to success. Look for opportunities around you.
When we look at the numbered cards in the Minor Arcana of tarot, we can see that Four cards can indicate stability, while the Six cards can indicate success. Here we see the way that Five cards, and the number Five in general, can be troublesome.
To get to the place of success, we must leave the comfort zone of Four. Five is where we are on our way to success but have not quite made it. We are no longer in the comfort zone, and not yet successful.
In that place of Five we must be comfortable with being uncomfortable, knowing that our success is coming, and is worth our hard work and sacrifice. We must believe in ourselves, and in our journey. We must see the future, and work toward it, without the structure we have known in the past.
It is probably impossible to become successful without passing through that awkward phase. Whatever your goal is, know that you must sometimes leave comfort behind, and live in a space that feels unstable, on your way to success.

Four, Five, Six Tarot Spread
Here is a three-card reading that can give insight on your way to success. It is extra auspicious if you get a Four card in the first position, a Five card in the second position, or a Six card in the Third position.
Card One: What you need to give up or move away from in order to succeed.
Card Two: What you need to know while you are working toward your success.
Card Three: What your success could look like.

What the Court Cards Want You to Know
On Wednesday, June 29, 7 pm to 9 pm, join us for a hybrid tarot class about the tarot Court cards. You can attend in Person in Palm City or online on Zoom.
The sixteen Court cards, typically called Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, can be some of the most confusing cards in the tarot deck.
This is because these cards are very versatile. They can reference the people around you. They can also reference parts of yourself. They can behave like any other tarot card and offer advice, comment, and prediction.
In this two-hour class you will learn easy ways to understand and work with these sixteen cards.
You can join us in person or online. Every student will receive access to a recording of the class. Visit EventBrite to purchase your ticket.
The class will be available at cardandcraftacademy.com after July 8th.
Guidance on the Journey
Major Arcana 5, the Hierophant, teaches us some important lessons about nuance and critical thinking. These lessons are necessary when we are going through ‘5 phases.’ That is, when we are going through a time of discomfort on our way to eventual success.
The Hierophant represents spiritual leadership, doctrine, and dogma. We know that spiritual study and mentorship are important. But we also know that dogma can be limiting, and mentors can become abusive.
It is so tempting to try to make something either fully good, or fully bad, fully helpful, or fully unhelpful.
Nuanced thinking requires us to be able to hold space for the idea that something, or someone, can offer things that are positive and necessary along with things that are difficult and troublesome.
As humans, we all have that mix within us, but have little patience and understanding for that mix outside of ourselves.
One of the lessons of the number 5, and the 5 cards in tarot, is to find the blessings in the difficulties, and tolerate the difficulties in the blessings. We also need to know when the difficulties should not be tolerated, even if that means sacrificing the blessings.

Expand with the Number Five
In tarot and in numerology in general, the number Five can be difficult. Yet, the struggles we find in the number Five are necessary to achieve our goals. In tarot, the Fives teach us what it takes to create our success in life.
If you have a tarot deck, or if you get readings, you may have noticed that in most tarot decks the Five cards display a lot of conflict, and often a sense of loss. These are not typically our favorite cards to see in a reading.
When I was first learning tarot, I decided that a good keyword for the number Five in tarot was ‘conflict’. I soon met a teacher who corrected me by sharing the following wisdom with me.
Five is really about expansion. Four your comfort zone, Six is victory. Five is that very uncomfortable place you find yourself in when you have mustered the courage to jump out of your comfort zone. You are working toward your goal but have not yet reached your success.
The number Five tells us that we have grown too much to stay in our safe space of comfort. We must expand, and that expansion is scary. That expansion might cause conflict with others who do not understand our growth or are intimated by our goals.
If you see the number Five, or groups of Fives, as you go through your life, take it as a push from the Universe to have the courage to reach for your goals.
When the Five cards come up in a tarot reading, consider that, even though they are uncomfortable, they can represent motion in the correct direction.
When you know you are ready to grow, use the number Five to support that growth, and to prepare you for the discomfort that can come as you expand to meet your new challenges on your way to success.

Working with the Tarot Fives
Tarot exercises can be helpful in two ways. First, they increase our understand of the cards and our tarot reading skills. Second, tarot exercises may give us an opportunity for personal growth.
Here is a tarot exercise to help you understand the Minor Arcana tarot Fives, and to help you get out of your own comfort zone.
Go through your deck, and find the Four, Five, and Six of each of the four Minor Arcana suits.
Look at these three cards in each suit, in order. Can you see a story of leaving something comfortable, enduring something difficult, and ultimately finding success??
Can you associate the story you find in each suit to a particular time in your life? How does that help you process and understand your own life stories?

Mentors
When we share knowledge with each other, we grow as individuals, and as communities.
This past weekend I had the privilege to be one of five presenters at The Masters of the Tarot, the annual tarot conference at the Omega Institute, produced by Mary K. Greer and Rachel Pollack. This was my first visit to Omega. The Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, deserves its stellar reputation.
Gathering with community in this beautiful place of nature and healing was especially sweet after more than a year of being away from in person events.
One of the things this event got me thinking about is the importance of mentors in our lives.
We typically define the word ‘mentor’ to mean a trusted teacher or advisor.
There are many kinds of mentors, in business, in creative pursuits, and in spiritual growth. Sponsors in twelve-step program are also mentors.
Chances are, you have had many mentors in your life. Perhaps you are a mentor to someone.
Sometimes our mentors disappoint us. When that happens, we need to decide if we are simply understanding their own human failings, or if they truly are not worthy of that mentorship position in our lives.
Every community functions best when it has positive mentors, and when those mentors lift others up, and give them the skills and confidence to become mentors themselves.
This weekend I was reminded just how lucky the tarot community is to have a longstanding tradition of wise and generous mentorship, and how lucky I am to be a part of that.
Mentoring happens in all communities. When you are ready to grow, find a mentor to help you do that. When you are ready to help others grow, find a way, either formally or informally, to share your knowledge, skills, and experience with others. It is through mentorship that traditions continue, and new ways forward are discovered.
The StaarCorner
Whether we are attending an elite conference like The Masters of the Tarot, or a larger event like StaarCon, one thing that makes a conference great is the quality of the teachers.
The Masters of the Tarot is produced by Mary K. Greer and Rachel Pollack. I am proud that Mary K. Greer was a headliner at StaarCon 2021, and that Rachel Pollack will be headlining at StaarCon 2022.
When I first started working with tarot, it was the books of Mary K. Greer and Rachel Pollack that inspired me. Now, years later, these luminaries still inspire me. They are both tarot mentors in the truest sense of the term.
I am delighted that both Mary and Rachel are part of our StaarCon family.
See Me in the Tampa Bay Area in August
I will be back in the Tampa Bay Area August 26 through August 30.
On Sunday, August 29, from 3 pm to 5 pm we will have a free tarot meetup at Panera Bread in Lutz, Florida.
During my time in the Tampa Bay Area, I am available for private readings at my AirBnB in Wesley Chapel. I am also able to make house calls for private readings. I am happy to come to your home or office for a psychic house party.
For more information, or to make your appointment, call or text 561-655-1160.
Let Tarot Be Your Mentor
We can look to the wisdom of the tarot cards and the archetypes within them to be spiritual mentors to us.
In the workshop I taught at The Masters of Tarot, “How Tarot Helps Us Heal”, we did a meditative exercise which allowed us to receive deep wisdom from the characters in the cards.
Here is how you can do this.
Choose a tarot card, either at random or by deciding which card you wish to use. Within that card image, find a character from whom you wish to learn. It might be the central character of the card. It might be an animal or a plant that draws your attention and curiosity.
Begin meditative breathing as you look at the card with a soft gaze. In your mind’s eye, enter the scene in the card and begin a conversation with that character. Allow them to speak with you. Ask them questions. You will be surprised as the wisdom you receive from a single tarot card in this meditative exercise.

Here is a tarot spread that is aptly named “The Mentor”.
Looking for a career mentor? NPR has some tips for you.
From the Kiwanis Club newsletter, here are six ways to be a great mentor.
Cards for Your Consideration
There are many ways that the tarot can speak about finding a mentor, or being a mentor. Both the Three and Eight of Pentacles can reference apprenticeship. The Kings and Queens can all be mentors, and the Pages and Knights can all be those in search of the right teacher.
There is one Major Arcana card that typically has the word ‘mentor’ as a keyword. That card is Major Arcana Five, the Hierophant.
The Hierophant describes precisely how beneficial a good mentor is, and how damaging a bad mentor can be. When the mentor is more about the doctrine, the rules, and the dogma, than they are about their love of the mission, the mentor stops being a mentor and starts being a roadblock. When the mentor is more about their own ego than they are about helping others get ahead, the mentor becomes an abuser.
Within the Hierophant is the potential for great authority, and for great abuse of authority. It is up to each mentor to understand their own motivations, and to use their authority wisely. It is up to each student to choose their mentors wisely. The Hierophant seeks to remind us of these timeless truths.

Between Two Pillars
This week Tarot Topics explores the pillars of the Tarot High Priestess.
If you have ever spent any time with a Waite or Waite-inspired tarot deck you may have noticed that Major Arcana Card 2, the High Priestess, sits between two pillars.
These two pillars are Boaz and Jachin, the pillars outside Solomon’s Temple mentioned in the Bible.
As we proceed through the Major Arcana, we see representation of these pillars in many of the cards. Clearly, these pillars are important, but why?
In the Waite High Priestess one pillar is white and the other is black. One represents Mercy while the other, Severity. That the High Priestess sits between these two extremes tells us something of her nature, and something that perhaps we often need to emulate.
The concept of balancing two extremes appears in other philosophies, including Buddhism. There, the Middle Way is a way of living that embraces both spiritual and material blessings, neither living in one world or the other, but balancing between them.
Very often we speak of needing more balance in life, be it a better work/life balance or better equity in a relationship.
Perhaps all balance begins with the message of the High Priestess. Perhaps as we interact with others throughout the day, and as we deal with ourselves, we must be like the High Priestess by keeping the balance between Mercy and Severity.
What does it mean to balance those two energies? It means that we don’t pass judgement, but neither do we let ourselves be taken advantage of. It means we act with compassion without enabling someone to continue negative behavior.
When we look at the High Priestess, we see that she is serene and peaceful in her countenance. The High Priestess teaches us that keeping balance keeps peace.
Upcoming Tarot Tour Dates
While I am always available worldwide for readings and mentorship by phone, Skype, FaceTime and Messenger, I love to travel to give in-person readings, teach workshops and entertain at parties.
I am planning on traveling more in 2019 than I have ever before. Mark your calendar for the dates below, and watch this newsletter for more information each week.

Spring Northeastern Tarot Tour March 26-April 9
I will be in Connecticut offering house parties in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut, as well as private readings at True Bikram Yoga in Madison. Look for some exciting workshops in Madison and New Haven as well. If you would like to see me or host a party while I am in town, email me or call me at 561-655-1160.
Is there somewhere you would like me to visit? Reach out and let’s see if we can plan something!
Two-Pillar Spreads
We can use the Two Pillars, Boaz and Jachin, to create any number of helpful tarot spreads. For example, Card One could be, “In what area of life should I be more merciful toward myself? Card Two could be “In what aspects of life should I hold myself to a higher standard?”
You could also use these two positions to ask, “How can I show more mercy to others?” And “Where should I be more protective of myself?”
Try as many two-card readings based on the Two Pillars as you can think of!

This week I spent some time thinking about Major Arcana 10, the Wheel of Fortune.

Cards for Your Consideration
This week, I ask you to consider Major Arcana 5 from The Lover’s Path Tarot by Kris Waldherr. In this deck, each Major Arcana card is illustrated with a famous love story from history and literature.
The name of Major Arcana 5 has been changed to “Tradition,” and the couple chosen to represent this card are Romeo and Juliet.
“Tradition” is a good keyword for the Hierophant because it evokes the two-sided energy of this card so well. On one hand, traditions are comfortable and beautiful. Traditions mark the passage of time and bring people together. On the other hand, traditions can be used to hurt people, and to suppress important growth and change.
The conundrum with the Hierophant, and the Pope he was originally drawn to represent, is this dichotomy.
The tragic story of Romeo and Juliet is a perfect illustration of the Hierophant energy.
In a reading, the Hierophant may express a desire to do the traditional thing, or to conform to the rule of an authority, or seek the advice of an authority.
This same card may also suggest that one must break out of tradition and be one’s own authority.
When the Hierophant appears, it may be time to consider your relationship to traditions and the authorities who keep them.
