Imperfection

Perfectionism is a problem. Yet, sometimes we must do better than our best, with the help of divine intervention. Often, we must learn to accept the perfection of our imperfection.

Fantasy art romantic painting a man with cat sitting and watching the cosmos.

We all know that nothing is perfect. Yet so many of us seek perfection and feel deflated when we inevitably fall short. What is it that causes us to demand perfection of imperfect beings? For some, it may be in our astrological chart. I’m looking at you, Virgos and Capricorns! For others, it may be a trauma response.

There is a line in the John Legend song, “All of Me” that really speaks to this. “All of me loves all of you…all your perfect imperfections.” To me, this captures the essence of true love. When we love someone, we see their flaws. We do not love them despite their flaws, we love them because of their flaws. We find their imperfections endearing. (Of course, a misunderstanding of this can be a slippery slope toward justifying and perpetuating abusive relationships.)

There are some interesting cultural practices that teach us the value of imperfection.   A great example is Japanese kintsugi. This is the practice of using gold to repair broken pottery, thereby bringing beauty and acceptance to the flaw.

There are times when perfection is what we need. I want my surgeon, and my hair stylist, to do their jobs perfectly. There are many jobs that require seemingly perfect skill. Yet, these jobs are done by obviously imperfect humans. Beyond skill and practice, there may be a bit of divine intervention that happens when the need is great. We may not be perfect, but we may sometimes be able to channel guidance which allows us to accomplish a task perfectly.

In divination, we seek the best answers we can find. We look to discover what we can do to create our best possible outcome. The same is true in life.  In our expectations of ourselves and others, we do best when we strive to do our best, while at the same time accepting and loving our imperfections.

We are excited to welcome presenter Vicki Santell back to StaarCon 2023! In January Vicki will present an exciting workshop on inner child work with tarot.

So many of us talk about ways in which tarot is an invitation to heal the inner child. Yet, there is not a lot of information available about how to do that. In this workshop Vicki will offer detailed information on how we can use tarot in the journey of personal healing.

Plan to join us for StaarCon 2023, either in person or online, for one day, two days, or all three days. Get your tickets now!

Is It Good Enough?

We all struggle with perfectionism to some extent. Tarot can help us figure out when good enough is good enough, and when we need to strive to do better.

Sometimes two-card spreads which ask ‘choice A’ or ‘choice B’ can be very helpful. We can use this same technique to figure out if what we are doing or planning is good enough, or if we need to keep trying or do more.

Simply pull one card for ‘Stop here- this is the best in can be’. Pull a second card for ‘Keep trying’.

The interpretation of these cards may be very intuitive. Consider how you feel about each card in its position, and let this process guide you.

Has anyone ever told you that tarot reading is incompatible with Christianity? Here is a new book that calls tarot and Christianity “a natural pair”.

Here are 10 Ways to Overcome Perfectionism.

Heal Perfectionism with the Hermit!

The High Priestess tarot card.

Guidance on the Journey

A card I often associate with perfection, perfectionists, and perfectionism is the High Priestess. The High Priestess can represent the highest ideal of balance, beauty, and spiritual wisdom. To strive for that ideal is part of the journey toward enlightenment. Yet, true enlightenment comes when we, like the High Priestess, delve into the deep waters of what is hidden.

So many things look perfect on the outside, but the inside is a vastly different story.

The High Priestess reminds us of this dichotomy.

So often, we see the High Priestess simply as a card of silence, intuition, connection with the subconscious, balance, and wisdom. The High Priestess is indeed all that, and yet so much more. When we explore this card as a lesson of perfection and perfectionism, we can learn so much about our own journey.

In a reading, the High Priestess can reveal a perfectionistic tendency that may be either helpful or unhelpful in the querent’s life.

The Right Moment

It is hard to know when the moment is right to make a change or execute a plan. Logic, intuition, and courage must align to find and seize the right moment.

A collage of a daydreaming woman and clocks

Timing is everything. When we are ready to make a change, seize an opportunity, or have an important conversation, we must feel that the time is right.

Sometimes it is hard to know when the right moment is, or if the right moment will ever come.

Often, the moment is right, but we do not feel ready.

When we look to the past with regret, it is often because of something we failed to do, chose not to do, or forgot to do. For whatever reason, the moment did not feel right, or we did not feel ready.

Regret is never helpful. Whether it is entirely true or not, it feels good to tell ourselves that we did not do something because we just were not ready.

The problem is, sometimes there is a window of opportunity that is only open for a certain time.

We cannot change what we did or did not do in the past. What we can do is be very aware of the present moment. We must act when the time is right. Sometimes, we must do this whether or not we feel ready.

But how do we know the when the moment is right?

There is a combination of logic and intuition that can let us know it is time to move. It may be that the window of opportunity is closing, so there is no choice. It may be that the moment feels right. It may be that divination and signs from the universe seem to give the go ahead.

We must learn to pay attention, use logic, intuition, and divination, and be willing to take a leap before we feel ready. Then, we will seize the right moment for the right opportunities.

Is the Moment Right? Find Out with Tarot

If you are planning to do something and want to know when the right time will be, divination can help. Astrology can give information about auspicious timing. A pendulum can let you know if the right moment is now.

Asking the correct questions of tarot can give a great deal of insight when it comes to timing the execution of your plan.

Here are some helpful questions to ask.

What happens if I do this right now?

What happens if I wait?

What happens if I do this in three months?

What signs will tell me the time is right?

Guidance on The Journey

Most tarotists agree that predicting timing is one of the hardest things to do. Yet, when we look to tarot cards to give us information about qualities of time rather than quantities of time, we can often get valuable information about when the right moment will be.

For example, the Knight of Swords and the Eight of Wands suggest swift action. The Knight of Pentacles advises us to take our time. Temperance, the High Priestess, and the Hermit all advise patience. The Aces may tell us to strike while the iron is hot.

When you are working with your tarot cards, consider which cards are slow, and which are quick. Which cards advise action, and which cards advise us to wait?

Holding Space for Truth

The search for truth is a lifelong journey.

AdobeStock_18612433-2500x1663.jpg

We are on a constant search for truth, in big ways and in little ways.

The search for truth is part of the human journey. The problem is, we have a hard time understanding what truth is, and what it means.

We who are spiritual seekers are, first and foremost, truth seekers. The irony that is the tools that we use to find truth are also tools that some people use to defraud others, or to allow spiritual bypassing for themselves.

Even when we have access to potent knowledge and skill, we must be able to hold ourselves accountable if we truly wish to divine truth.

Whether we are seeking spiritual truth or mundane truth, we can only see the truths we allow ourselves to see.

One problem is that we often set up a condition where if one thing is true, another thing cannot be. This sort of thinking usually moves us further from the truth.

It is hard to understand that a person might love their job and hate their job at the same time. Or, that something could be both healing and damaging.

When we see that two seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time, we can learn to hold space for all possibilities. We can find our priorities. We can acknowledge all truths, but accentuate those that best support our well-being.

Sometimes it feels easier to accept a fantasy and deny the truth.  It takes courage to see what we would prefer not to see. It takes patience to understand that more than one thing can be true at the same time.

There are aspects of spiritual truth that are a mystery, and must remain so. The mystery becomes the truth we must embrace.

The search for truth is not something that happens in a moment. We are always learning, and always growing in our ability to ask the right questions, and to understand the answers.

What Will Be True?

In tarot, and other divination methods, we often make future predictions. That is, we try to discover what will be true in the future.

Since possibilities for the future are always changing, predicting the future can be tricky. The future is not always set. We are able to see possibilities. We are able to gain insight and wisdom to help us strategize. We can get information that will help us set ourselves up for the best outcomes.

One of the best techniques we can use to help us predict the future with tarot is to find a certainty percentage. Here is what that means.

If we ask a question like, “Will I be married within five years?” and pull some cards, we might get cards that make us say a definite and enthusiastic yes. We also might get cards that feel more like a maybe.

We can take the level of certainty and enthusiasm we see in the cards and assign a percentage to it, to describe just how likely that particular outcome is.

If we decide that the outcome is unlikely, we can consult the cards to find strategies to make our desired outcome a reality. In that way, we are not only predicting the future, we are creating the future.

Cards for Your Consideration

Divinatory tarot is a tool for truth-seeking. We can also use tarot to help us discover and release our resistance to hard truths.

There are many cards whose interpretations speak specifically of honesty or dishonesty, and of the search for truth and understanding.

This week I would like to consider the High Priestess as such a card. When we look at the Waite-Smith image, we see that the High Priestess finds truth from many sources. She wears the symbols of many religions. She holds a sacred text. She is robed in the waters of the subconscious, which flow off the page to the right side.

She tells us that truth is found both within and without.

She sits between the pillars of mercy and severity. She finds truth in the balance of the two.

Peace and Power

What brings you peace? What helps you know your power?

AdobeStock_255167425-2500x1552.jpg

I was speaking with a friend recently about the ocean. She said that the ocean was a place where she felt both peace and power. I know what she means. I feel that way about the ocean too.

What struck me later, though, was the strength of those two words together, peace and power.

When we put those two words together, they can mean and reference so many things.

We find peace and power in our spiritual faith.

When someone passes away, we pray that they rest in peace and rise in power.

When we seek social justice, we seek both peace and power.

On a more personal level, to be happy and well we need to be at peace with who we are. We need to feel peace within, and, as much as possible, be at peace with those around us.

It is equally important to know our power in the world, and to feel that sense of power within ourselves. We need to use our personal power to live the life we desire, and to help others do the same.

So often we have a hard time finding those two energies inside ourselves.

What must we do to be at peace with ourselves?

What must we do to know our own power?

Sometimes it feels that the world works to take those two energies away from us.

It is important to know where and how to find those energies for ourselves. Connecting with nature, enjoying music, dance, exercise, and yoga are all things many of us do to find our peace and our power.

We need good boundaries, with others and within ourselves, to keep the world from stealing our peace and making us feel powerless.

It seems to me that the more we work to cultivate a sense of peace and a sense of power, both within and without, the better we will feel inside, and the better we will do in life.

Two Cards for Peace and Power

I love two-card tarot spreads. The concept of peace and power offers itself nicely to creating some two-card spreads. If we like, we can expand that to four or six cards.

How many questions can you think of to ask tarot about your own peace and power?

Here are some to try.

Card One: What brings me inner peace?

Card Two: What helps me find my inner power?

Card One: How can I be a force for peace in the world?

Card Two: How can I best use my power in the world?

Card One: What makes me feel a lack of peace?

Card Two: What makes me feel disempowered?

Cards for Your Consideration

I find a lot of personal peace and power in my tarot practice. Reading the cards, learning their lessons and divining wisdom for myself and others helps me to feel both peaceful and powerful.

When I think about the seventy-eight tarot cards, the one card that seems to personify the energies of peace and power for me is Major Arcana 2, the High Priestess.

This is, of course, a powerful card. In a reading, the High Priestess can speak of many things. She represents balance, wisdom, silence, secrets, serenity, the subconscious, perfection, and intuition, amongst other things.

In her balance and serenity, I find her peace. In her knowledge and wisdom, I find her power.

Perhaps she teaches us to find peace and power exactly as she has, through study, contemplation, and meditation.
