Love is all Around You

Valentine’s Day can be such a fun holiday! It can also be a poignant reminder of loss, or a reminder that your love life isn’t what you want it to be.

February 14th has become a day to celebrate love, and love is certainly something worth celebrating! If you’re having a hard time feeling the love this year, remember this.

Love isn’t just about romance. The early Greeks had four words for “love.” Often we contemplate these “four loves” from a Christian perspective. I think their message is universal, and has bearing for all spiritual people.

“Agape” describes the spiritual nature of love. Agape is charitable love, unconditional love, the love we have for the human family, the planet, and the love we have for Higher Power.

“Eros” refers to romance, passion and attraction. Eros is the love that causes us to long for each other’s company. Eros is our ability to find the beauty within each other, and to appreciate the beauty around us.

“Philia” is the love we find in friendship and community. Philia comes from shared mutual interests and values. Philia is the affection between family and friends who actually like each other.

“Storge” is the natural and instinctive love we have for our family members. This is the love that keeps family bonds together even when family members don’t get along.

I can think of other kinds of love, too, like the love we have for our country, or for our pets.

Even if a certain type of love is missing at the moment, love is always all around us. The more we focus on the love we have, the more love we will attract.

Love in Your Life Tarot Spread

In this four-card tarot spread, each position represents one type of love. Interpret each card to discuss how you are giving and receiving this type of love, or what you might need to do to improve your ability to give and receive this type of love. You might also see events or situations that are occurring currently that impact you emotionally, or things from the past that are still impacting you.

Lay out the cards in any shape.

Card 1. Agape: This card speaks to your ability to recognize the spiritual nature of unconditional love. Do you see the value of charity and forgiveness? Do you feel love for Higher Power, or for the world around you?

Card 2. Eros: This card represents your love life. It could speak of a current relationship, something you are manifesting for the near future, or something that you need to do to manifest a romantic relationship.

Card 3. Philia: This card represents your community; the friends, family, co-workers and neighbors with whom you share interests and enjoy being around. Are you happy in your social setting? What can you do to improve your community life?

Card 4. Storge: This card represents the unique joys and challenges of family life. What’s going on in your family? Is there anything you need to change, or do differently?

You can also use this spread for a Valentine’s Day love spell. Just go through the deck and choose the card that reflects how you would like things to be for each position. Spend a few minutes in meditation visualizing those possibilities.

Three Ways to Heal your Heart

Sometimes we have to make an effort to release emotional wounds from the heart. Here are three things you can do to release pain and open your heart to love.

1.  Meditate with the Ace of Cups. The tarot Ace of Cups is the symbol of the heart chakra, and the healed and open heart. Breathe as you look at the image. Image yourself drinking the cup, or being very small and diving into it. As you breathe, visualize that each time you exhale you are releasing pain, and each time you inhale you are expanding your heart.

2.  Use flowers. Roses and lavender are particularly good to encourage healing. Try using essential oils in your bath, or keeping fresh flowers in your home.

3.  Carry rose quartz. You can find a piece of rose quartz at any rock shop, or metaphysical store. Carry it with you, or wear a piece of rose quartz jewelry near your heart.

Meditation, flowers and stones don’t replace therapy, but they can truly help you in your effort to cleanse, refresh and open your heart.

What’s up at the Psychic Café?

This past Sunday, February 9th, my guest was to have been Jordan Hoggard. Sadly, Jordan’s furry companion of twenty-one years, Mecurius, passed into Spirit. Jordan will be back on the Psychic Café soon. I know you join me in sending love to Jordan at this time.

I was thrilled that Mary Ellen Collins agreed to be my guest at the last minute this Sunday. Mary Ellen and I did a few readings. Mary Ellen shared some ideas for creating and reading oracles, as well as a fun tarot game.

You can play along when you watch the show in archive!

This coming Sunday, February 16, we’ll be checking in with Marcy Currier to see her progress on her new Mystical Frogs Tarot deck. Watching her bring this deck to life is a wonderful way to really understand the journey of tarot.

Learning Tarot: The Sun

The Sun is the nineteenth numbered card of the Major Arcana. In the Waite image we see that the child is able to stay on the horse even though he has no reins, nor even a saddle.  He shows no fear. The sunflowers have turned to face him, rather than facing the sun itself, as they normally would.

The child shines brighter than the sun itself.

Within each of us is the ability to shine that brightly.

The spiritual lesson of the Sun is simple. Live in the light. Share your gifts. Be happy.  Don’t be afraid to shine. Don’t let anyone else cast their shadow on you.

Often in a reading, those lessons will be a clear directive to the querent.

Key words for the Sun are happiness, brilliance and success.

The Sun is generally thought to predict positive things. One less-than-positive interpretation of the Sun could be a warning against an over-abundance of ego.

The Sun can predict a tropical vacation, or a move to a sunnier climate.

The Sun asks you to use your talents, and to show the world what you can do.

Some readers will see the Sun as referring to a young child, or a pregnancy.

The Sun predicts your success, as long as you believe in yourself and give all of yourself to you tasks.

The Sun tells you that you can’t hide from your talent. We each have a responsibility to be the best we can be.

Next week we will explore Major Arcana 20, Judgment.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is the Page of Swords.

In a reading for an individual, the Page of Swords could refer to a specific young person. In this context it makes sense to see the Page of Swords as an energy that will support us in learning and communicating truth.

This week, make a commitment to learn something new, either in a formal or informal way.

This week, take time know your own truth, and be ready to communicate that truth when the need arises.

If you are a writer or a student, use this energy to help you focus.

If you are confused about something in your life, use this energy to help you find clarity.

In business, it is time to focus on networking and marketing.

Pages are always students and messengers. Swords, the suit of Air, give a strong focus of communication, truth and knowledge to this Page.
