Play

We often hear that “play is the work of children.” What we don’t hear often enough is how important play is for adults. When we are young, we learn through play. The same is true when we become older.

Taking time to be playful is also important to our physical and emotional well-being. This time of year offers many opportunities to step outside of our routine and do something silly or fun.

Make sure that, during this busy holiday time, you take time to play!

The Tarot Fool: Honoring the Inner Child

Numbered card 0, the tarot Fool, is the star of the story told by tarot. As such, the Fool is the card that represents each one of us on our journey through life. The Fool is often pictured at a crossroads, or about to walk off a cliff. Although he does not know what lies ahead, he proceeds forward unconcerned. His attitude is merry and carefree.

Often, when the Fool figures in a reading, he reminds us to be playful, and to honor our inner child. The Fool encourages us to take the leap of faith, even if we are unsure of the outcome.

Recently, someone said something to me that made me think of the Fool. She said that to experience joy, we must be fully present in the moment, rather than worrying about the past or the future.

We when adopt a playful attitude that honors our inner child, we are able to experience joy in the simple moments of our lives.

Often, the Fool is a tarot card that can help us do that.

The Week in Review

This week, on my Dark Forest blog, I wrote An Open Letter to Self-Published Creatives. We reviewers and bloggers are happy to help promote your projects. You just need to ask the right way!

On my personal blog, Tarot Trends, I wrote a short, inspirational piece about how we envision the future.

On our Tarot Topics Community page, I wrote about the process of finding your inner tarot reader.

On my 78 Magickal Tools blog on PaganSquare, I posted “Tarot Magick for the World.”

From Around the Web

From Conjure in the City, here is an interesting post about how to spot psychic scams and spellcaster frauds. Let me be clear that I do not necessarily believe or endorse every point in this post, but I believe it is an interesting perspective. I also believe that we do need to be aware of psychic fraud, and keep ourselves safe from those who try to take advantage.

From Carrie Paris, here is an interview with James Wells and a special tarot spread about activating your creative gifts.

For last-minute holiday shopping, here is a source for 300 different affordable tarot-themed art prints!

Resources for Tarot Play

There are many games and activities you can enjoy with your tarot cards, even beyond the techniques of divination, meditation, manifestation and personal growth with which you are already familiar.

My book, “Tarot Tour Guide”, offers a number of interesting games and exercises to help you play with your cards.

There are many other great resources to help you think outside the box and have more fun with tarot.

The book, “Tarot Games” has been a go-to of mine for years. Written for the feminist community for use with the Motherpeace Round Tarot, many of these games translate well to groups large or small, with any type of tarot decks.

Here are two interesting books I haven’t read. Each offers unique ideas for tarot fun.

365 Tarot Activities” could be used in daily tarot study.

The Tarot Activity Book: A Collection of Creative and Therapeutic Ideas for the Cards” has a wealth of interesting tarot exercises.

The Tarot Game” is an actual board game played with tarot cards!

How do you play with tarot?

Learning Tarot: King of Swords

The King of Swords is the highest expression of the Air energy in the Minor Arcana.

The King of Swords can represent an adult man, perhaps born under an Air sign (Geminin, Libra, Aquarius).

The King of Swords can also be a trustworthy man, or a gentleman with honorable intentions.

The King of Swords can also be a good communicator or an authority on ethics, integrity, technology, science or communication, of any gender.

The King of Swords may refer to an institution, such as a bank, a university or a corporation. The King of Swords may indicate be a leader, specifically a leader who speaks in favor of doing the right thing.

The King of Swords may remind you to speak your truth and honor your integrity. The King of Swords may encourage you to step into a leadership role.

The King of Swords may speak of you, or someone else, as an exemplar, that is, an example to the community of the honorable way to be.

This concludes our journey through the suit of Swords, the Air suit. Next week we will begin our journey through the suit of Pentacles.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card Weekly Reading is the Sun.

Appropriate as we approach the Winter Solstice, the card I draw for us this week is Major Arcana 19, the Sun.

The Sun is a card of brilliance and happiness, and reminds you to seek joy during this holiday season.

The Sun also commands you to use your skills and abilities for the betterment of the world. Do not let anyone steal your peace, or your power. Do not let anyone, or anything, cast a shadow on your inner light.

In mundane things and spiritual things this week, find what makes you happy, and share your happiness with others.

Play!

Sometimes adults forget how important it is to play. Our playtime allows us to be creative, athletic and silly.

Sometimes when we play we become closer to nature. Sometimes play is a social thing and we become closer to others.

How do you play? Many of us don’t make time to do things we enjoy. Some people aren’t even sure what they enjoy!

When we were children, playing was how we learned about our world and how we connected with our peers. Now, playing is often how we nurture ourselves and our passions.

No matter how busy your life is, make sure you have time to play.

News about the Newsletter

The Tarot by Christiana Newsletter is a constant work in progress. Each week I work to bring you information about upcoming events, a recap of recent events, fun things to read and interesting things to think about.

Last week I received an email from a subscriber who found the newsletter difficult to read because the font was too light. This week I’m trying a different font to correct the problem. I am very grateful that someone took the time to write and let me know a way to make the newsletter better.

Do you have a suggestion for this newsletter? Is there a topic you would like me to cover? Do you have a question I could address in an article? Is there a way I could make the newsletter better for you?

Please send an email to christiana@tarotbychristiana.com and let me know!

Playing with Tarot

Tarot historians believe that tarot was invented first as a game.

Today we use tarot for divination, magick, spiritual study and creative inspiration, amongst other things.

Even in its spiritual context tarot can be playful.

There are many cards that encourage us to play, including the Fool and the Three of Cups.

There are many ways to be playful in the way we interpret tarot and hear its message.

There are games we can play with tarot in groups and on our own that help us to understand the cards. For instance, Tarot Charades is a wonderful game where people take turns acting out individual tarot cards.

Sometimes a tarot spread can be a game if we approach it with the right attitude. You can also let tarot help you be more playful.

Here’s a Tarot Dialogue for you to play with. As you ask each question, pull a card to answer it. Then, shuffle the card back into the deck and ask the next question. If you get the same card more than once pay special attention to it.

1.       What should I do to nurture my creativity at this time?

2.       What should I do to nurture my body at this time?

3.       What can I do to develop playful friendships?

4.       How can I be more playful in my day-to-day life?

5.       What sort of new play shall I try in my life?

Our April 28th show will feature Mary Nale, editor of Attune Magazine.

We will hear about her tarot practice, and about what inspired her to start one of the internet’s best metaphysical magazines.

Did you ever wonder where serious hoop dancers go to hone their skills? They go to Hoop Camp! Do you wonder what happens at hoop camp? We will see a video and find out!

The Week in Review

This week Christiana wrote about a favorite TV show on the Dark Forest. Read The End of Eureka.

On Tarot Trends, Christiana wrote about interpreting the signs around us. Read Signs.

On the Tarot Topics Community Blog Christiana wrote a piece for tarot professionals and aspiring tarot professionals. Read 9 Ways Tarot Readers Work Against Themselves.

Have you ever notices that some tarot cards have similar meanings? One common theme among quite a few cards is “new beginnings.” Christiana shares the differences and similarities between cards that express newness in How Tarot Prepares us for New Things, also on the Community Blog.

Christiana wrote about reading with less than 78 cards in Playing with a Full Deck on the Community Blog. That post inspired Dax Carlisle, president of Tarot Guild, to write a blog post about the opposite practice, reading with more than 78 cards. Read Dax’s post Using the Big Deck on his Tarot Guild blog.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your One-Card reading for the week is the Queen of Swords.

The Queen of Swords can describe a woman who speaks the truth, even when no one wants to hear it.

This card encourages you to find your own truth, even if it is something you do not want to face. It reminds you to do the right thing, even when it is difficult.

The Queen of Swords suggests that now is a time to nurture your wisdom, and to trust that wisdom to be your guide.

The Four Elements and the Major Arcana

The four elements of life are Earth, Air, Fire and Water. They each have metaphysical properties as well as physical properties.

The four elements correlate with the four suits of the Minor Arcana of the tarot. They also correlate with individual cards of the Major Arcana.

The term “Major Arcana” means “Greater Secrets.” The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana contain the most spiritual messages and lessons of the tarot, and tell the story of our journey through life.

When we learn the elemental associations for each of the Major Arcana cards, we have a clear way to understand these important cards.

This 75 minute webinar will help the tarot student more fully understand the four elements. It will provide a deeper way to comprehend each of the Major Arcana cards.

The student will be able to more fully interpret the Major Arcana cards, whether reading for yourself or others.
