What is Your Energy?

This week we are contemplating what it is to know your own energy, and how to use tarot to help perceive it.

AdobeStock_88004638-2500x1667.jpg

What is Your Energy?

We all have a unique energetic signature.

We use the word ‘energy’ to mean a lot of different things. Energy can be your sense of motivation. Energy can be what cooks your food. The life force energy that exists within all of us is something that we can use to heal ourselves and others, through a variety of energy healing techniques.

Energy is also the unique vibe you put out into the world.

Energy is the feeling people get when they are around you.

It’s interesting that other people may feel and recognize your energy more than you do. Often, we don’t realize that people see us as loving, or competent, or funny, or warm or playful. We can’t always tell how others feel when they are around us.

We are all a conglomeration of energies and attributes, and each of us has a unique energy signature.

Can we control our energy? To some extent, yes. If we work to be peaceful, we will exude that energy of peace. If we work to be efficient, we will put out vibes that let others know that we can get the job done quickly and well.

Our social energy is part of the equation, too. Are you an introvert, extrovert, or somewhere in between?

The Myers-Briggs personality types can be seen, in a way, as a description of the energy we cultivate.

Aura photography is a way to visually see what our energy field looks like.

If we pay attention to sensing the energy of others around us, we get a better sense of how to feel energy, and how it affects us. This can make it easier to sense our own energy.

In meditation, we can slow down and focus in order to feel the energy around us, and settle in to an understanding of what we feel like to others.

Sometimes we feel naturally drawn to people simply because we like their energy. Sometimes we feel repelled by people for the same reason.

To become familiar with your energy is a good way to learn to know yourself and love yourself.

To cultivate the energy that you want to express to the world is a good way to embrace personal healing and growth.

Perhaps the energy we put into the world is a window into our soul; that part of us that existed before we were born, and that will continue to exist when we die. Perhaps our energy is the expression of that sacred part of us that is eternal.

How to Read Energy with Tarot

When you want to know about a person, or about yourself, you can simply ask the cards, “Who is this person?” or “Who am I?” or “Who is Sam?”

Pull a few cards and look for the story you see there. What energies do you see in these cards? What type of experiences have shaped this person? How is this person feeling?

All of these things add up together to give you a read on the person’s energy.

So often we talk about people being ‘good’ or ‘bad’. It’s much more helpful to discover a person’s energy, which melds many factors into something you can recognize and understand.

When you look at the cards, try to fill in the blanks on these sentences.

I am a person who…
My priorities are….

I feel…

I care about…

Obviously, if you are looking at someone else, replace the word ‘I’ with their name.

When we use the cards in the exploration of personal energy, we become better able to know ourselves and others.

When we think of each tarot card as expressing an energy, we develop a new tool for reading tarot.

The Week in Review

This week I shared some ideas for etiquette when participating in free reading livestreams on social media.

Remember that I do my Three-Card Weekly Reading on my Facebook business page every Monday. If you miss it live you can catch it in archive.

From Around the Web

Tarot historian Sherryl E. Smith, from the Tarot Heritage website, happened to catch an episode of Global Tarot Circle. She was impressed with my reading style, designed an exercise around it and share it on her blog. The blog title is “Speed Reading the Tarot with Christiana Gaudet”.

From Yoga Journal, here is a guide to energy healing.

I was surprised to find this article on energy healing in Psychology Today!

Cards for Your Consideration

The Ace of Wands is the perfect card to consider when we talk about chi life force energy. Wands, also known as Rods, Staves and Batons, is the suit typically associated with the element of Fire. Fire is our passion, our creativity and our energy.

Aces are the number One, and are associated with new beginnings, source and essence. Therefore, we can see the Ace of Wands as the essence and source of Fire, which is our life energy.

Typically, the Ace of Wands can describe a new creative project, or a new feeling of enthusiasm.

In many tarot decks, included the one pictured here, the Smith-Waite Centennial, the Wands are shown sprouting new life. It’s interesting that, through associated with Fire, they are not shown burning, but rather, sprouting.

That’s because the energy of the Ace of Wands, and the suit of Wands, is not about destruction. Rather, it’s about the life force that is growing and blooming within us all.

When You Shouldn't Trust Your Intuition

Fear, desire and ego can masquerade as intuition. How do you tell the difference?

AdobeStock_186297193-2500x1667.jpg

When You Shouldn't Trust Your Intuition

Make sure your guidance is coming from the right place!

Something we hear and say daily in the spiritual community is that you should always trust your intuition. There is a good reason we hear and say that often. It’s because most of us hear that little voice prompting us. Perhaps we have dreams that seem to give us clues. Yet, when the prompts and clues challenge us to see something we don’t want to see, or do something we don’t want to do, we are very often tempted to write those prompts and clues off as nonsense. Later, we remember and regret.

So why in the world am I saying that there are times we shouldn’t trust our intuition? It’s because sometimes we mistake other things for intuitive information. Fear, desire and ego all speak with voices that mimic intuition. If we trust those inner whispers blindly, we are sure to follow the wrong path.

How can we determine if what we are feeling is truly intuition? The first thing we must be able to do is take our emotions off the table. We have to ask ourselves if fear, desire or ego might be playing a role in feeding us what feels like intuitive information.

Imagination is a huge part of any psychic work. Imagination is connected to the third eye, or brow chakra, seated there along with our psychic vision. Without imagination, no intuitive work is possible. Sometimes imagination allows intuition to speak. Sometimes imagination is speaking with its own voice.

We have to be able to question ourselves. We have to be able to look within and ask, “Is this my intuition or simply my imagination?” If we have any emotional attachment to the question or the answer, we are likely to miss the truth.

Sometimes we receive information in symbolic form. The bear in your dream might be your mother, for example. The book you see in your mind’s eye might be an actual book you need to write, or it might be an indication that you need to closely follow the rules. If we can’t interpret the symbols we receive, we will have a hard time following the wisdom they provide.

Sometimes when we receive and follow good intuition, we believe the next time we think we have received intuition that it will be as on point as it was previously. This is definitely a mistake. Each intuitive hit needs to be considered on its own merit.

Like anything else in life, working with intuition requires a careful balance. We really are equipped with profound inner guidance that we need to tune in to and consider. At the same time, we are also equipped with other voices that try to steer us.

When we can’t tell the difference between the voice of intuition and the voices of fear, desire, ego or imagination, it’s time to find another way to receive guidance. That’s when a good professional reading or a conversation with a coach or counselor comes in handy!

Vet Your Intuition with Tarot

When you feel like your intuition is telling you something, you can use tarot to confirm or deny the message you have received, and to flesh out the actions you need to take, if any.

Likewise, if you are doing a tarot reading and are wondering if you are on the right track in your interpretations, you can ask your cards to vet your information.

To do this, simply hold your premise in your mind.

Phrase a question like, “Is it true that this is what is happening?” Pull a card, or a few cards.

From there, you may have other questions to help you plan your actions based on what your intuition has shown you. You might ask questions like, “Is it true that I should take this step?” “What will be the result if I take this step?” “What else do I need to know about this situation?” “What am I not seeing that I need to see?”

If the cards reveal that you have missed the mark, you can ask questions like, “What is really true here?” and, “What caused me to misunderstand this?’

By working with the cards in this manner, you can decipher the symbols and messages you have received and create an actionable plan.

Cards for Your Consideration

In light of our topic this week, let’s consider the Moon, Major Arcana 18, from Spiral Tarot.

The Moon perfectly illustrates the delicate balance we must find between trusting our intuition and being cautious not to mislead ourselves.

In the light of the moon, nothing is as it seems. We must walk carefully, measuring each step.

In this image, we see the passage of time, just as the phases of the moon measures time.

We are warned to be patient as we discern what the Maiden, Mother and Crone want us to know.

Traditionally, the Moon can speak of intuition and magic, mysteries and confusion. It can be a warning against treachery and deception, and an admonition to use your intuition. Sometimes those divergent aspects of this card can feel like they are in conflict with one another. Yet, when we consider them through the lens of the need to make sure we haven’t mistaken something else as the voice of intuition, this meaning of the Moon becomes very clear.

Speak From Your Heart, Not From Your Hurt

It's important to communicate our feelings, as long as we don't let the feelings drive the communication.

AdobeStock_127350440-2500x1381.jpg

Speak From Your Heart, Not From Your Hurt

Communication can bring healing.

This week, as I was doing my Three-Card Weekly Reading on Facebook Live, the cards I had pulled caused me to say, “speak from your heart, not from your hurt”. A number of viewers commented on this; it seemed to really strike a chord with people. It certainly did with me.

How often have we said things we regretted because of the emotions we were feeling at the time? How often have we given the weight of our pain and anger to those who weren’t the cause of that pain?

Even when speaking to someone who has caused us pain, we are more effective when we don’t let our pain guide the conversation.

When we communicate with friends and loved ones it is important to be authentic. We need to let people know where we are coming from. If we are feeling pain, we need to share that. The trick is to speak about the pain rather than to let the pain speak.

When we give voice to our pain and hurt, we very often speak with resentment, fear and anger. When we speak about our pain and hurt, we can speak thoughtfully and in a way that doesn’t cause more hurt.

There are many people who feel we need to keep all conversations positive; that we should only speak about pleasant things and keep the unpleasant things private. Yet, when we bury our feelings, they can fester and become the foundation for depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.

We need to acknowledge our pain in order to find healing. Very often that healing comes from communication. Sometimes it is impossible to share our feelings with those who have caused us the most hurt. It’s good when we can find a friend, loved one or professional to help us process our grief. Never should we direct that pain and hurt toward a person. Yet, we should always have at least one person with whom we can talk about our feelings.

The next time you are having a difficult conversation, make sure you are speaking from your heart, not from your hurt. The next time something makes you angry, find a way to acknowledge that anger without blasting that angry energy at another person.

Own your feelings and speak of them honestly. But don’t let your feelings do the speaking.

Cards for Your Consideration

The tarot Pages often represent young people. Yet, they have other meanings, too. One important thing the Pages can indicate is communication. The type of communication is determined by the suit.

Since the suit of Cups is related to the element of Water, and Water is about matters of the heart, the Page of Cups can instruct us to speak from the heart, and to communicate in a loving way.

Sometimes this card can even show up as a message of love from a departed loved one!

If many Pages appear in a tarot spread, there may be a need to pay attention to communication. If the Page of Cups appears, it may be an indicator that you need to speak what is in your heart.

This Page of Cups is from Ciro Marchetti’s Tarot of Dreams. Get your copy of this striking deck from my website.

Can We Really Predict the Future?

Sometimes the future is easy to see, sometimes it's not. Sometimes we can change what's coming, sometimes we can't. Here are some tips for predicting the future under any of these circumstances.

AdobeStock_247895570-2500x1667.jpg

Can We Really Predict the Future?

How much can we see, and change, what comes next?

Tarot reading involves a certain amount of prognostication. So does meteorology. In fact, there are many fields that involve predicting the future, including medicine, finance and politics.

On a personal level, most of us have some combination of logic and instinct that causes us to make decisions based on what we think might happen next.

Many of us have dreams that predict the future. Some of us have a strong inner knowing, often about other people, or global events.

In my years of professional tarot reading, I have come to some conclusions about future predictions. It seems to me that there are some things that are absolutely predictable and unavoidable. There are other predictions that can be prevented or mitigated based on our actions. There are some aspects of the future that are completely unknowable. There are some things that the universe seems to keep secret from us, for our own good. There are some things we choose not to see because of our own fears, desires and tendencies toward denial. There are even times that we know what we choose might have a bad outcome, but we choose it anyway.

Predictions are indeed possible, and a heads-up on what might be coming can be extremely helpful. Predicting the outcome of certain choices can help us in decision-making. Even when it comes to undesirable predictions, forewarned can be forearmed.

I like to focus on the aspects of the future that we, ourselves, can create. Very often, what we do today creates what happens tomorrow.

When we look for future predictions, sometimes there are clear answers, and sometimes there aren’t. When the answers aren’t clear, it isn’t the fault of the diviner, nor the divinatory tool. Unclear predictions are an indication that a particular aspect of the future is not yet set. That means our action, including the power of prayer, can make a difference!

Prayer, energy work and wise action often have some power to shape what happens next. We need to be proactive toward our best possibilities and, at the same time, accepting of what we cannot control. It is in that middle ground that we find peace in the present, and joyful anticipation of what comes next.

Divination Tips for Predictions

When we seek a glimpse of the future, we need to recognize a spectrum of probability. That is, that some things we see are unavoidable, some things are likely, some things we can change, and some things are unlikely but still within the realm of possibility. If we are sensitive to this spectrum, we can make accurate predictions and know how to prepare for what comes next.

Whether we are using a tool like tarot, pendulum, or runes, or whether we are simply checking in with our intuition and clairsentience, the there are two important things to consider. The first is to ask the right questions, and many questions. The second is to accept that some things are indeed predictable, and others are not. To have frustration with that process is never helpful.

What are the right questions to ask when you are looking to predict something specific? Let’s use a career example. Suppose you are looking for a new job, but don’t yet have any interviews lined up. The first two questions you might ask are questions that typically make diviners shudder. “When will I have a new job?” and, “Will I get a new job that I love?” Some diviners would instead ask, “What do I need to do to get a new job?” or, “What can I know about my next job?”

I am a fan of asking as many questions as possible and looking for trends in the answers. I might even ask those difficult questions involving timing and yes-or-no, just to see what comes up.

If you look at the consistency in the answers you get, you can develop a sense of how predictable this matter is, and how much advice you can get on how to achieve your best possible outcome.

I might also do a time-advance question, such as, “What does my career life look like in six months?”

If all the questions I ask receive similar answers, then I can conclude the future is pretty set. At that point I would ask about the actions needs to make sure things go this way. “What must I do to make sure this comes to pass? “What pitfalls should I avoid?” If I don’t like the way the future prediction looks, I will ask questions like, “How can I change this?”

If the answers to the questions tend to vary, I can get a sense of the different possibilities. At that point I can at least define what the most likely possibilities are. Then I can ask questions to see what can be done create the situation that is most preferable.

When we take our time in making predictions, ask a lot of questions and look for the trends in the answers, we can derive information that is both accurate and helpful.

The Week in Review

This week I shared a tarot tip about reading techniques. Do you use the same spread, or same technique, for every reading and every question? Try these six ways of getting information from the cards!

Did you catch my Three-Card Weekly Reading on Facebook Live? If you missed it, you can watch it in archive on my YouTube channel.

From Around the Web

Jenna Matlin has written a wise piece on Medium about distance readings. Sometimes people feel that distance readings might be less accurate than in-person readings. In-person readings are wonderful because we get to see each other face-to-face, but the accuracy doesn’t change, as Jenna states in her post.

I found this interesting post on OmTimes. It shares ways you can contact those who have passed on.

There is one kind of ‘fortune-telling’ that we need to avoid. In psychology, ‘fortune-telling’ is a term that means anticipating negative outcomes. Here’s an article about that.

Cards for Your Consideration

This week let’s consider the Wheel of Fortune as a card that tells us that anything can happen.

Some modern tarot decks include an “Unknown Card.” That is, a seventy-ninth card that says that, whatever question was asked, the answer is simply unknowable. I find such a card redundant, mostly because of the Wheel of Fortune, which can often say the same thing.

In the Celtic Dragon Tarot, by Lisa Hunt and the late D.J. Conway, the Wheel of Fortune shows a book called “the Grimoire of Life” which says, “The Wheel Turns. Learn to ride with dragons.”

To me this says it all. Sometimes you just have to spin the wheel and see where it lands. Sometimes you need to go with the flow, and trust that the outcome will be what it needs to be. Sometimes you have to trust that a Higher Power is in charge. Sometime you need to trust your own ability to handle what comes, whatever it might be. The Wheel of Fortune can remind us of this.

You can get your own copy of this great tarot deck from my website!
