Divinity, Myth, and Mystery
Faith and fact are two different things. Both are important.
I think it is part of being human to wonder about our spiritual nature, and the spiritual nature of the universe.
There are so many different religions, schools of spiritual thought, and philosophies. Some adherents believe their doctrine with an unshakeable faith that moves past belief, and into the realm of ‘knowing’. They absolutely and unequivocally ‘know’ that their particular doctrine is true, and, therefore, every other doctrine in the world, by default, is false.
Regardless of the specific belief system, this inability to distinguish between faith and fact always strikes me as dangerous. It seems to miss the point of spiritual thought.
It is natural to seek truth. It is good to wonder about those things we cannot see with our eyes, but still perceive. I think that those who want to turn faith into fact perhaps do not understand the strength and beauty of true faith.
I do not think it is an accident that there are so many different belief systems. Virtually all cultures have some myth or belief structure to explain their place in the universe, and their larger reason for being.
That we all perceive there is something larger than ourselves, and all come up with different ways of understanding that something, is a powerful thing.
If we could take all the world religions and philosophies and put them together, we would find, at the center, a core of truth. We each have our own way of connecting with the divine, and we all seek the divine.
I think, from our perspective as human beings, the inability to solve those great mysteries, to answer the big questions, is part of divinity.
To know and understand divinity the best we can as humans, we must be satisfied with what we can learn from myths and archetypes. We must know that the mystery itself is sacred.
Doreen Valiente imagined the voice of the divine. She wrote this from that perspective.
“You who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.”
The concept of the divine within appears in many religions. Christians call it the Holy Spirit. The Sanskrit word, ‘namaste’, is a respectful greeting in India. Amongst some yoga practitioners and modern spiritual seekers, ‘namaste’ has come to mean a recognition of the divinity within each of us.
I began the first chapter of my book, Tarot Tour Guide, with a discussion of a famous quote from Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
This is a reason that archetypes are so important. Archetypes help us learn about ourselves. When we learn about self, we learn about the spirit within. In that way, we come closer to knowing something about the divine.
I think it is possible, and advisable, to know and honor our spiritual nature with certainty. At the same time, it feels best to honor the mystery of the divine in faith, to find inspiration from our myths, without needing to prove them as facts. There is divinity in wondering. There is spiritual grace in believing in the goodness of something we can’t yet understand.

What Does the Universe Want Me to Know?
My favorite question for tarot is, “What does the universe want me to know?”
In asking this question, we are allowing divinity, however we perceive that, to speak through the cards, and give us a direct message.
This is also a great tarot exercise because it causes us to interpret a card, or a group of cards, in this specific yet open context.
To do this exercise, take a moment, breathe and focus.
Ask the question, and pull a single card, or a small group of cards.
Speak your interpretation aloud. Begin by saying, “The universe wants me to know that…”
Give your interpretation to yourself in this way. Take the message to your heart.

Cards for Your Consideration
Tarot is a great tool to help us understand the world around us on both a material and spiritual level.
There are many tarot decks based on cultural myths that can help us connect with the spiritual messages inherent in myths from around the world. Kris Waldherr, Lisa Hunt, and Julie Cuccia-Watts are three tarot artists who have created numerous tarot decks based on mythologies. We are excited that Lisa Hunt will be joining us for StaarCon 2022!
The Moon, Major Arcana 18, is a card that speaks specifically to mysteries, and to the search for spiritual truth.
Often the Moon appears to remind us that the journey to enlightenment is fraught with dangers and pitfalls. Very often those dangers include the fundamentalist tendency to think we know a lot more than we do.
The Moon reminds us to search for truth, but also to honor the power of the mystery.

The Eternal Internal Flame
We all have within us the fire that heals, inspires, and transforms.
Fire has been a symbol for many things, in every culture, over centuries. The metaphysical attributes of Fire in tarot and astrology include passion, creativity, motivation, humor, desire, and anger. Truly, Fire is anything that burns within you.
The solar plexus chakra is also associated with Fire. This chakra, the third chakra, is associated with will, career, self-esteem and personal transformation.
Fire is certainly transformative. Heat transforms food, metal, and wood. Metaphysically, we can call on the energy of Fire to transform our lives, and to bring strength, motivation, and revitalization.
I believe that within each of us in an eternal internal flame. No matter how tired, discouraged, unwell, or upset we may be, we always have that inner flame.
When we turn our focus to the solar plexus, we can consciously turn up the heat. We can send energy from the solar plexus throughout our body to bring healing, vitality, and inspiration.
We call on our inner flame in other ways. When we laugh in the face of hardship, we are using our inner flame to help us get through a difficult time. When we turn our attention to creativity, we are bringing healing and inspiration to ourselves and others.
Never forget or ignore the fire that burns within you. Your well-being, your ability to recover from setbacks, and your ability to enjoy the beauty of life depends on that inner flame.
The internal flame is eternal, because that flame is our soul; that part of self which existed before birth and will exist after our body dies.

Two Cards by Candlelight
Many people like to use candles as part of their tarot reading rituals. To light the candle at the beginning of the session and extinguish it at the end is a very simple and powerful way to create the sacred space in which to do the reading.
If you are doing a reading about your inner flame, using a candle is especially powerful.
Try this two-card reading to learn about ways to help your inner flame grow. May sure you do this reading by candlelight!
Card One: What I need to do to nurture my inner flame.
Card Two: How my inner flame nurtures me.

Cards for Your Consideration
There are fourteen Minor Arcana cards and seven Major Arcana cards associated with the element of Fire. We can also see wisps of Fire in other cards. The Ace of Swords, for example, is Air. Yet, we can sometimes see some fiery inspiration in that card. The Three of Cups is Water. Yet sometimes we can see a bit of creativity there.
The card I most often consider when thinking about our eternal internal flame is the Ace of Wands.
The Ace of Wands is the seed and seat of Fire. The Ace of Wands is the origin and essence of Fire. The Ace of Wands can represent the solar plexus chakra.
When you see the Ace of Wands in a reading, you might consider that this could indicate a need to stoke the internal fire, to nurture the flame that sparks life within you.

New Beginnings
Spring offers us all the opportunity to begin again.
After months of hanging on to signs of spring, it seems that spring has truly arrived for most of the northern hemisphere. There is something inherently joyous and hopeful about seeing new life growing all around us. It reminds me that new life is always beginning within us as well.
Every day I speak with people who are focused on regret from the past. We all have regret, and we all have things in the past we wish we could change.
Yet, every moment is an opportunity for a new beginning and a fresh start. Spring beckons us forward, inviting us to try something new, to release the past and look to the future with anticipation.
Even if we are tired, even if we are in pain, there is still new energy around us. We can use the new energy of spring to give us new energy, and the courage to begin again.
The StaarCorner
Our mission at StaarCon includes honoring our deck artists and designers. Our mission also includes presenting a wide scope of topics and tools. We are happy to check both those boxes by welcoming Joanna Salerno and Lainie Sevante Wulkan, designers of The Food Healing Deck, to StaarCon 2022.
This is an unusual oracle with a specific purpose.
Joanna and Lainie ask the question, “What if food could talk?”
This deck speaks to practical nutrition, and to healing body, mind, and spirit as we explore our relationship with food.
Divination is diverse in the tools we can use, and in the ways we can use our tools for healing. We are excited to bring the creators of The Food Healing Deck to StaarCon 2022.

You can get a New Beginnings Reading on Tarot.com!
Cards for Your Consideration
When we speak of new beginnings, the first cards we tend to think of are the four Aces. Aces can indicate the start of something new, or the essence or source of something.
Some people see the four Pages as indicating new beginnings. I resist the conflation of ‘new’ and ‘young’ in this context. Pages can indicate youth, which to me is not the same as newness. Of course, each tarot reader sees things their own way, which is as it should be.
Other cards that indicate a new beginning or a fresh start can include the Fool and the Magician.
The card I want to consider as a card of new beginnings is Major Arcana 13, Death.
Major Arcana 13 gets a bad rap. People refer to it as ‘The Death Card’ in dramatic tones. Some readers and clients dread the appearance of this card in a reading.
Truly, I have seen Death appear more often to herald a pregnancy or a wedding than a funeral or grievous loss.
Death indicates change. That is, the release of something old, and the embrace of something new. Sometimes change is unfortunate, difficult, or unwelcome. Usually, change is necessary.
Change always offers the opportunity for a new beginning.
If we can consider Major Arcana 13 as a card that may offer us something new and different, we might find a more pleasant new meaning and understanding for this card which is so often feared.

Checking the Boxes
This week we explore the practical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of list-making.
Some people are natural list-makers. My mother had countless numbers of small notebooks, all filled with lists. There were grocery lists, gift lists, and to-do lists.
My grandmother did not like to-do lists. She would make “accomplishment lists” at the end of the day so she could feel happy with what she had done, rather than guilty about what she had left undone. There is some wisdom there!
In our society, the “bucket list” is the things you want to do before you die. Many people have bucket lists that are fanciful, and very unlikely to be fulfilled.
Single people are encouraged to make a list of exactly what they want in a partner, in an effort to manifest the right relationship. I cannot begin to tell you the number of times I have comforted people after the potential partner who “checked all the boxes” on first glance turned out to be a source of heartbreak and disappointment.
We often think of the list of things that will bring us satisfaction in life, and look at which boxes are checked, and which are not. It is good to be clear, with ourselves and with the Universe, about what we want in life. A checklist for life can keep us on track and motivated as we work toward our goals.
We also need to have some mystery boxes on our list. That is, things we do not know we want, but are surprised to discover they bring joy and fulfillment to our lives.
Sometimes the opposite is true, as well. We get something we thought we needed, or wanted, and it turns out to not make us happy at all.
It is good to have clear and stated goals. Yet, we also need to learn to be happy before all the boxes are checked. Sometimes we do not get everything we want when we want it.
There is no single thing, and no specific recipe of ingredients, for joy, happiness, and satisfaction in life, no matter how many boxes we check.
We might get everything we want, and still feel that something is missing. We might get less than what we want, and still maintain an attitude of gratitude and space for joy.
No matter what we have or wish to have, happiness comes from what is within us. No list of accomplishments or possession will make us happy until we allow our happiness. We cannot expect to anticipate all the happy surprises that could bring us the most joy of all.
That is where a gratitude list comes in handy. It can be a wonderful exercise to make a list of all the things for which we are grateful. Very often, that energy of gratitude helps us to manifest the things that will check all the boxes.
The StaarCorner
Our second annual conference will be January 21 through 23, 2022. We will be a hybrid conference, meeting in person in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and online using the Accelevents platform.
One of our missions for StaarCon is to present a wide range of topics within the field of divination. We are excited that Mary Ellen Collins has agreed to present a class on casting charms as a unique divination process. She will also share ways to combine charm casting with tarot reading.
Whether you plan to attend in person or online, now is the time to begin collecting small objects for your personal charm divination kit. Small toys, jewelry pieces, coins, keys, and other mementos can all become sacred objects with which you divine truth and enhance your tarot readings.

Join Us for Tarot Class on Zoom Tomorrow Evening!
I am so excited for tarot class tomorrow evening. We meet on Zoom at 7 pm, ET, Thursday, April 22. This class is unique in that we are going to attempt to quantify and teach one of the most mysterious aspects of tarot reading. That is, the flow of a tarot reading.
Every tarot reading will tell you that sometimes the cards, the information, and the energy just flows, while other times a reading can feel stilted and disconnected.
In this workshop we will explore what creates flow, and how to find the flow even when it is not happening easily.
Learn more about this class and get your ticket by visiting the event description on my website. Class fee is $37.50.
List and Manifest with Tarot
Tarot is a great tool for setting goals, and for raising the energy to help manifest them. There are many ways to do this.
If you are not sure exactly what you want, you can use divination to help you know what boxes you should be looking to check.
For example, suppose you have had a series of failed relationships, but would like to manifest a relationship that would be healing and happy. You could ask the cards to show you the attributes of someone who would be a great partner for you. Choose five or six cards from the deck at random. Make a list of the attributes you see in those cards. Then, spend some time focusing your energy on those cards, and that list, as a way of manifesting that person into your life.
If you are clear on your specific goals, you might go through your deck looking at the cards. Cognitively choose all the cards which, to you, represent your goals, and the things you want in your life. This is a version of creating a vision board. By choosing the images which represent the list of things you want, you are using your energy, and the power of the images, to help bring those things into being.

Have you seen any of my weekly livestream reading sessions on my YouTube channel? Here is the most recent Three Card-Weekly Reading. Can you see a way that these cards are playing out in your life this week?
From Around the Web
Here are three recent articles from popular magazines and websites about tarot. It is great to see tarot gaining acceptance and understanding in the world at large.
In Marie Claire, we see an article about ways that tarot is not helpful, and ways that it is.
Financial Times tells us why tarot is trending.
MLB.com shares a story about a baseball player who receives help from a tarot reader.
Cards for Your Consideration
There are many tarot cards that might speak of the process of quantifying what it will take to produce satisfaction, and what it will take to manifest those things.
The Two of Wands is a card that can speak of this, either to describe such a process or to encourage it.
In the Two of Wands we see a person considering what in the world they want, what they want to do, and how they are going to make it happen.
There is both a practical and spiritual component here. The setting of the goals and making of the list is practical. The attention and energy sent in a specific direction is the spiritual practice of manifestation. Two of Wands can reference both these components.
