The Sacred Space of Time
Holidays are holy times for us. How will you use your sacred time?
The word ‘holiday’ originally meant ‘holy day’. This is probably because most of the days we now observe as holidays began as days of religious observance. These days a holiday can simply be a day off, a national commemoration, or a vacation time.
This time of year holds great religious significance for many people, and, at the same time, offers time away from work, time to travel, time to relax, and time to gather with friends and family.
In divination, meditation, manifestation, and other spiritual work, we often talk about creating ‘sacred space’. This is because the spiritual work we do usually does not happen in a temple or building that has been consecrated for spiritual pursuits. Sacred space means that we create a space for holy work and spiritual observance wherever we happen to be.
It seems to me that a holiday is akin to sacred space, with one difference. A holiday creates sacred, protected time, while sacred space creates a holy place. We literally take a day, or a few days, and declare that time to be sacred, holy, and protected.
What we do in that time is up to us, our circumstances, and our traditions. If we honor this time as a sacred gift, we can find within this time and space the opportunity for healing, relaxation, fun, joy, or whatever we might seek or need.

Simply shuffle your deck and pull cards in answer to questions such as the following.
What should be my focus right now?
How can I best spend my time right now?
Is there something I need to learn right now?
What do I need to get out of this time I have right now?

Cards for Your Consideration
When we consider this concept of sacred time, there are two Major Arcana card that come to mind. Both the Hermit and Temperance have ‘time’ as a keyword, and both have a sacred and deeply spiritual quality.
How might these two cards offer insight as we approach the holiday this week?
The Hermit reminds us that this day might make us feel lonely as we remember past celebrations and those who are with us. Yet, the Hermit also offers peace and solace. The Hermit reminds us to enjoy our own company. The Hermit reminds us to reflect on the passage of time from a place of wisdom.
The Hermit has made his journey and has no place he needs to go. There is great relaxation in the ability to simply be in a place, without considering what might need to happen next.
Temperance looks at the way things blend and balance. Temperance reminds us that we always need the right ingredients, and in the correct amount. Temperance coaches us to be creative in the way we plan a party, prepare a recipe, or schedule an outing. Yet, we are cautioned to be creative only within the confines of the balance which assures a good outcome.

The Gifts We Share
We all have innate gifts and talents which we must develop, and share with others.
This time of year, we buy gifts, make gifts, and exchange gifts. Perhaps the most important gifts of all, however, are the gifts we have within us, which we share with others all year long.
We use the term ‘gifted’ to describe those who have a specific talent, whether creative, intellectual, or mystical. Yet, these natural gifts must be honed with training and practice to reach their potential. And, whether we recognize it, we all have special gifts which are innate within us, which we develop over time, and which we share with others.
Some of us share our gifts as part of our profession. For others, it is a hobby, or an act of service.
It is fun to surprise those we care about with a thoughtful present. Yet, the real gifts we share are the gifts that allow us to be present in one another’s lives as we share our talents with them.

Finding Your Gifts with Tarot
Some people have a special and obvious gift or talent. Others need to look within to find a hidden talent, gift, or purpose. Tarot is a great tool to help us do that. Simply ask the cards, “What is a gift or talent that I should be developing and sharing?” Pull a card, or a few cards, and see what happens. Then, you can ask the cards a second question. “How can I develop this gift?”
A conversation with the cards can help you find and develop your gifts, and ultimately share them with the world.

Cards for Your Consideration
A tarot deck can be a perfect gift! Here, for your consideration, are some great deck choices as a gift for yourself, or someone you love.
Light Seer’s Tarot is fast becoming a very popular deck. The art style is different than traditional tarot, but very easy to read and understand. This deck is modern and fresh, while still deeply spiritual and evocative. Light Seer’s Tarot is published by Hay House and available on their website.
Aunt Lily’s Tarot is a new personal favorite of mine. It is available in two sizes. This deck was designed for the creator’s teenage niece. Yet, it is usable and loveable for anyone. This deck is both traditional and inclusive. Traditional card meanings are retained while images and card titles are gently changed to make the deck completely appropriate for younger people, or anyone who might be squeamish about harsh images or nudity. You can get this deck directly from Claire Lily’s website. Claire Lily will be presenting at StaarCon 2022!
U.S. Games Systems, Inc. always has amazing decks. You can’t go wrong with a traditional Waite-Smith deck, of course. You might also enjoy a more modern choice, such as the Herbcrafter’s Tarot or the Eight Coins’ Tattoo Tarot.
StaarCon 2022 presenters Lisa Hunt and Ciro Marchetti have each created numerous tarot decks available through U.S. Games, Llewellyn Worldwide, and their own websites. You can also find tarot art and accessories on the artists’ websites for the tarot lovers in your life.

Expand with the Number Five
In tarot and in numerology in general, the number Five can be difficult. Yet, the struggles we find in the number Five are necessary to achieve our goals. In tarot, the Fives teach us what it takes to create our success in life.
If you have a tarot deck, or if you get readings, you may have noticed that in most tarot decks the Five cards display a lot of conflict, and often a sense of loss. These are not typically our favorite cards to see in a reading.
When I was first learning tarot, I decided that a good keyword for the number Five in tarot was ‘conflict’. I soon met a teacher who corrected me by sharing the following wisdom with me.
Five is really about expansion. Four your comfort zone, Six is victory. Five is that very uncomfortable place you find yourself in when you have mustered the courage to jump out of your comfort zone. You are working toward your goal but have not yet reached your success.
The number Five tells us that we have grown too much to stay in our safe space of comfort. We must expand, and that expansion is scary. That expansion might cause conflict with others who do not understand our growth or are intimated by our goals.
If you see the number Five, or groups of Fives, as you go through your life, take it as a push from the Universe to have the courage to reach for your goals.
When the Five cards come up in a tarot reading, consider that, even though they are uncomfortable, they can represent motion in the correct direction.
When you know you are ready to grow, use the number Five to support that growth, and to prepare you for the discomfort that can come as you expand to meet your new challenges on your way to success.

Working with the Tarot Fives
Tarot exercises can be helpful in two ways. First, they increase our understand of the cards and our tarot reading skills. Second, tarot exercises may give us an opportunity for personal growth.
Here is a tarot exercise to help you understand the Minor Arcana tarot Fives, and to help you get out of your own comfort zone.
Go through your deck, and find the Four, Five, and Six of each of the four Minor Arcana suits.
Look at these three cards in each suit, in order. Can you see a story of leaving something comfortable, enduring something difficult, and ultimately finding success??
Can you associate the story you find in each suit to a particular time in your life? How does that help you process and understand your own life stories?

How the Light Gets In
A Leonard Cohen song that I had never heard before stalked me this week. It got me thinking about the spiritual meaning of light, and how we are never truly broken.
You probably know that I think it is very important to pay attention to synchronicities. That is, when you hear a specific phrase or see a symbol more than once in a short time it is likely that Spirit is trying to tell you something.
This happened to me this week. The phrase I heard repeatedly is from the Leonard Cohen song, Anthem. The phase is, “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in”.
I heard those words spoken by various people on podcasts and radio shows with no attribution. Each time I heard the words they struck me as significant. Then I saw I meme on Facebook which used the quote and attributed it to Cohen. That is how I learned those profound words are a song lyric.
So often I speak with people who feel that they are broken. I do not believe that people can be broken. Yet, we sometimes feel that way. When we do, we can think about how those broken places can let the light in.
What does this mean?
The term ‘light’ is widely used as a spiritual metaphor. In mundane and spiritual terms, light is what allows us to see. It is the root word of ‘enlightenment’. Sometimes healers call themselves ‘lightworkers’. One of my favorite tarot decks is Light Seer’s Tarot.
We may be scarred by the things that seemed to break us, but those scars can also bring us enlightenment.
The word ‘light’ in this context refers to intelligence, holy presence, and deep understanding. This concept of light transcends religion and denomination since it is understood this way by many cultures and schools of thought.
Beyond illumination, the word ‘light’ also speaks of something that is the opposite of heavy. Heavy is how we feel when we are sad, overburdened, and depressed. Light is how we feel when we are free, in control, and in the space of peace and joy.
These two aspects of light, what allows us to see and what is easy to carry, make the spiritual concept of light an obvious description of spiritual connection, healing, and awakening.
When we can embrace our flaws, our hurts, and our scars, as the hard parts of the journey that allow us to ultimately feel lighter, we understand how those cracks do indeed let the light in.
The StaarCorner
We are so excited to have Sasha Graham as a headliner at StaarCon 2022. Recently Sasha and I had a conversation about her tarot career, her tarot origin story, and how she became a tarot author and deck designer.

Tarot Lets the Light In
Tarot is certainly a tool of healing, and a tool of enlightenment. Here are some questions to ask tarot when you are feeling broken, and ready to let the light in.
What can I learn from this situation?
Why am I feeling this way?
How can I feel better immediately?
How does this difficulty serve me?
How will this situation bring me healing?
How can I heal from the pain of this situation?
What must I do to feel at peace?

Cards for Your Consideration
Major Arcana 16, the Tower, is one of the most feared cards in the tarot deck. This card is understood to mean devastation, destruction, and the life events that bring permanent change.
Yet, we can see that the lightening that strikes the Tower down is enlightening and from a holy source.
That which is built on a flawed foundation cannot stand forever. When the Tower is destroyed, it makes way for something new.
The process we see in this card is a wonderful illustration of the painful and terrifying cracks that ultimately allow the light in.
