Coloring Outside the Lines
Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving for excellence, and it is not the same thing as precision. When we relieve ourselves from perfectionism, we free ourselves up for excellence, and make precision possible.
When we were kids learning our crayon skills, we divided into three categories. There were those who had the dexterity and patience to color inside the lines and create works of art worthy of any family refrigerator. There were those who really didn’t care about lines or appropriate colors and blissfully scribbled whatever and wherever they liked. Then there were those who really wanted to color inside the lines and make adult-approved art, but somehow just couldn’t.
I was the third type. I had neither the manual skill nor the attention to detail to color inside the lines. I thought an orange sky could be much more interesting than a blue one. By the time I hit third grade I was so tired of grown-ups questioning my color choices and encouraging me to be more careful with my work that I gave up on coloring completely. As an adult I have enjoyed coloring with markers and pencils. I still do not love crayons.
I think I longed to be the second type of person who just did not care about what other people thought. It looked like fun to use colors with willy-nilly abandon, and to not worry at all about the lines. It seemed like even more fun to not care what others might say. It took me a good fifty years to learn what, apparently, some first graders have known all along.
I am thinking about this because of something that came up in a YouTube livestream reading last week. The reading was for a person who was struggling with perfectionism. His desire to do everything perfectly made it very hard for him to do anything at all. What came up in the short reading was this.
There is a difference between excellence and perfectionism. To strive for excellence is to work to do our best, and to be our best. This is an admirable quality. Perfectionism, on the other hand, is a trauma response.
I’ve spent some time thinking about this. There are so many creative things, professional things, and spiritual things that people want to learn. So often, the fear that they won’t be perfect at it keeps them from trying. I think we all need to know that stiving for excellence is enough.
However, there are some practices that really do require everything to be just so. I have often said that I want my doctor and my hair stylist to be perfectionists. Really, I don’t. What I want is for these professionals to work with precision.
Precision and excellence are good and reasonable goals which lead us toward success.
Unlike perfectionism, precision and excellence can leave room for creativity and experimentation.
Perfectionism seeks approval from others. Excellence is its own reward.

The Perfect Tarot Reading
What is a perfect tarot reading?
The topic of excellence and perfection comes up a lot in conversation with tarot students. Many students are afraid to try reading for themselves or others because they want to make sure they get it right.
While it is important never to suggest you are an expert when you are not, it is perfectly okay to explore tarot reading as soon as you get your cards. In fact, the only way to learn to read tarot is to practice reading tarot.
We all want to give excellent readings. We all want to be precise in the information we derive from the cards. Yet, the only way to do that is to practice a lot. Those readings that we do early in our studies, or even early in our careers, are going to be different than the readings we are able to do when we are more practiced.
This used to bother me. I want every reading I do to make a difference. I almost wish I could go back to each person I read for thirty years ago and read for them now, because we are always becoming better readers.
Then I remember one of the first professional readings I ever did. It was, in fact, the first couples’ reading I ever did, at the very first psychic fair I ever worked. I was so nervous. When the reading was over, both agreed it was the best reading they had ever had. Looking back, I can tell you that it felt to me that I had no idea what I was doing. Yet, I read the cards the best way I knew how, and the reading landed.
Wald Amberstone of The Tarot School once said this to me. “We trust the right querent with the right question to find the right reader with the right cards at the right time.”
Does this mean that every reading is a perfect reading? We have all heard horror stories of poorly trained tarot readers, and fraudulent tarot readings. Clearly some readings are not perfect.
Yet, if we are serious about our studies, and serious about our practice, and our intention is simply to give a great reading, it is likely that any reading we give will have a measure of perfection.
One thing that has been true in my practice, and may be true in yours, is this. The readings I perform seem to approach perfection most easily when I am not afraid of the tarot version of coloring outside the lines.
What does this mean? For me, it means allowing the cards to speak in the moment, rather than always relying on specific classic interpretations. When we use keywords and classic card meanings as guidelines rather than lines of confinement, we can see a situation with greater detail and clarity.

Sunday is Mother’s Day in the United States. Check out some Mother’s Day tarot spreads, including one from me!
Mother’s Day can be a joyful day. It can also be a painful day, for many reasons. Here is a tarot spread and journaling prompts from Acorn and Burdock to help you process whatever this day brings up for you.
Here is a Mother’s Day tarot spread from The Tarot Room, posted in 2012. This spread offers five cards to help us understand our connection to our mother, and to our own maternal nature.
From 2015, here is a Mother’s Day spread from my blog, which includes an early video on my YouTube channel!

Did you know that you can color your own tarot deck? In fact, some tarotists believe that you must color your own deck in order to make a proper connection with the cards.
There are several tarot coloring books and color-your-own tarot decks available. There are courses of tarot study that include coloring your deck as part of the curriculum.
If you are a new tarot student, or if you would like a way to reconnect with your cards, consider a tarot deck coloring project!
Simply Google on “color your own tarot cards”. You will be amazed by the number of options available to you.
If you do not want to commit to coloring a whole deck, you might want to choose one specific card to color. This process could be a deep meditation into that card.
You might choose to color your card or cards in a way that matches the decks that you use. Or you may choose different colors based on your own sense of the energy of the card.
This process of coloring a tarot deck, or a tarot card, is creative and meditative. No matter where you are on your tarot journey, this process will help you know and understand tarot on a deeper level.

Ask For What You Need
Sometimes we feel dissatisfied because we have not asked for what we need, or we do not know what we need. Often, that is because we feel unworthy.
I often speak with people who are dissatisfied with their relationships. Sometimes, the cards suggest that the reason the relationship is not working is that the dissatisfied person has not clearly communicated their needs and desires.
I see this not only with romantic relationships, but also friendships, and professional and familial relationships.
To ask for what we want we must know what we want. That can be trickier than it seems. Many people do not know how to check in with themselves and discern their own wants and needs.
Even when we do know what we need, it can be hard to make the request. We worry that we are asking too much, or that our desires will be denied, or worse, ridiculed. We may feel shame for asking for something. We may feel unworthy to receive the things we want and need.
This is an example of why it is often said that you cannot love someone else until you love yourself. If we cannot feel worthy of meeting our needs, how can our needs be met in a relationship?
We need to be able to ask for what we need on a spiritual level as well. That is what manifestation is all about! There is a well-loved Bible verse from the book of Matthew that says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
If we know what we want, ask for it, look for it, and pursue it, we are likely to find it. If we do not know what we want or need, we need to spend some time figuring that out. If we are reluctant to make our needs known to others, we need recognize our worth and speak up.
Our needs will not always be met to our satisfaction. Yet, the more that our needs are fulfilled, the better our experience of our relationships and our lives will be.

Our goal is to make each conference better than the last. We are planning many improvements for 2024. I am excited to announce that we have been able to work with Accelevents to extend the thirty-day AfterGlow to a full year.
This means that for the entire year following StaarCon ticketholders will be able to watch the presentation recordings, meet in the lounges, shop in the expo, and attend lounge events which will be scheduled all year long!
This will not increase the price of your StaarCon ticket, but it will offer an entirely new conference experience.
We all know that the saddest thing about a tarot conference is the ending. With this new feature, in a way, StaarCon will never truly end.
I hope that you make plans to join us in January, and for the year-long AfterGlow!
What’s Missing?
There are times we feels that something unidentifiable is missing from life, or from a job, from a relationship, or even from a creative project. This feeling tells us that we have a need we must identify. Tarot can help us do that.
Here is a simple three-card spread to help you figure out what is missing, and what to do about it.
Card One: What’s missing?
Card Two: Why is it missing?
Card Three: How do I fix this?

Creation and Divination
Here is an activity that combines a basic human need with creativity and tarot.
We all love food, and we all use food as part of our gatherings and celebrations. Over the course of my career, I have had several occasions to enjoy tarot-themed foods at community events.
If you are part of a local tarot community, you might consider tarot foods for your next event. If you are solitary in your practice, you might enjoy the process of preparing and eating a tarot food and contemplating the associated card(s) as you do.
At a community potluck dinner many years ago, we asked that people bring tarot-themed dishes. We enjoyed Death chili, Eight of Wands chicken teriyaki, Two of Pentacles pie, Hermit cookies, Deviled eggs, and more. This was a fun and creative exploration for our community.
At a different gathering, one of our group members fashioned the symbols of the four tarot suits in bread. It was a large table decoration, not for consumption. Its presence made our meal and our time together even more special.
How might you use food to bring the energy of tarot to a meal, a gathering, or a ceremony?

What is Emotional Strength?
Sometimes our busy lives do not leave us the time we want for spiritual devotion. This week we discuss how we can connect with the divine in single moments.
In February we contemplated spiritual strength. This week I am thinking about emotional strength.
I have noticed that many people conflate strength with the ability to conceal or suppress feelings. There are certainly times that a poker face can be an advantage. But is a poker face a sign of personal strength?
I think the ability to conceal emotions is a skill, but I do not think that skill is related to being strong. I do not think that emotional suppression is ever a sign of strength.
We humans possess a wide range of strong emotions. We receive all kinds of messaging that teaches us to embrace what we call positive emotions, such as joy, humor, reverence, and love. That same messaging often makes us feel shame for what we call negative emotions, like anger, fear, disappointment, hurt, and sorrow.
People often say, “I know I shouldn’t feel this way, but I do.”
Our feelings can sometimes reveal parts of ourselves that we do not want others to see, and that we do not ourselves want to confront. Yet, difficult emotions can serve us by showing us where we need to heal.
We cannot let our emotions be the driver of our decision-making. Yet, the courage to feel, acknowledge and appropriately display our emotions is never a weakness.
In fact, I believe that emotional strength is the ability to identify, honor, and process all our emotions in ways that do not cause harm to ourselves or others. In the proper setting, our ability to be transparent about our feelings is a sure sign of emotional strength.

Diving into the Strength Card
Strength has the distinction of being the one of the two Major Arcana cards with two possible numeric assignments. In the Waite-Smith tarot deck, and all tarot decks of that tradition, Strength is card Eight. In other tarot traditions, such as Marseilles and Crowley, Strength is card Eleven and Justice becomes card Eight.
As a Waite-based reader I usually think of Strength as card Eight. The fact that Strength call also be card Eleven makes me think of the flexibility associated with the quality of strength.
Flexibility is an important component of physical strength. Flexibility is an essential component of emotional strength.
The traditional image of the woman and the lion is so important and meaningful. In a contest of physical strength, the lion would surely harm the woman. In the image, however, the woman has tamed the lion. She did not do this with physical strength. She did it with love, with compassion, and with patience.
From this we learn that love, compassion, and patience are key components of emotional strength.
We can see, too, that there is a relationship between the woman and the lion. Each has a reason to fear the other, and yet they have formed a bond of trust.
The ability to trust and to form relationships are also components of emotional strength.
Within each of us is a gentle woman and a lion. We need both. The lion is our fierce, wild nature. Here is our passion, our desire, our anger, and our excitement. We must not let these emotions rage out of control. Yet, we must acknowledge and deal with these feelings. The gentle woman allows us the strength to process all that we are feeling.
When we think of this interaction between the woman and the lion, we discover something else about emotional strength. Emotional strength requires balance, awareness, and self-control.
Emotional self-control is never the same thing as emotional suppression.

May First is this Monday. This is a special day in many cultures. Those who honor traditional Celtic practices celebrate the first day of May as Beltane or Beltaine, a spring celebration with many themes mostly centered on love and fertility.
I searched for some Beltane tarot spreads for you try. I even found one from me!
From 2008, here is a five-card spread inspired by the crown of the May Queen from Llewellyn Worldwide.
Worts and Cunning Apothecary published a seven-card spread in 2015. This spread centers on the Fire energy of Beltane and exploring our heart’s desire.
The Butterfly Witch created this three-card spread in 2017. This spread focuses on what we want to grow and manifest in our lives.
In 2015, Ethony shared a very creative six-card spread that works with medicinal flowers that are associated with Beltane.
Now, here is mine! I created this in 2014. It is a four-card spread based on the maypole.
Creation and Divination
Whether you work with tarot or other oracle cards, it can be helpful and fun to practice creating your own card spreads.
You can create a spread for a specific situation. You can create a spread inspired by an event or a holiday.
For this exercise, play with creating a tarot spread to process your emotions.
So often we do not truly understand what we feel, why we feel that way, and what to do about it. Sometimes our feelings are not truly in reaction to something immediate. Rather, the recent occurrence might bring up feelings from a significant hurt of the past. This can offer a wonderful opportunity for healing, but only if we recognize it as such.
A card reading with a specifically designed spread can help you understand your feelings and their causes. Simply make a list of what you need to know in the simplest terms and assign a card position for each question.
When you design a card spread, you are engaging your intuition and your creativity. These energies will remain engaged as you perform your divination.

Sacred Moments
Sometimes our busy lives do not leave us the time we want for spiritual devotion. This week we discuss how we can connect with the divine in single moments.
Life is busy! There are multiple jobs, school, family obligations, and other commitments. It is difficult to find time for our personal needs.
People tell me they wish they had more time for religious ceremony, spiritual study, and sacred practices. When daily commitments demand our time, these sacred activities often get pushed aside. This leaves us feeling ungrounded and untethered. It can also cause us to feel guilt and shame for abandoning our spiritual and cultural practices.
When I became a mother, I no longer had time to meet my friends for rituals, drumming and chanting, or yoga. I felt this as a profound loss. Then I remembered something my mother had said to me when I was a about six years old. She was talking with me about the importance of regular personal spiritual devotion. To illustrate her point, my mother told me that she prayed when she took out the garbage at night.
My newly formed sense of religious propriety was offended by this. “You talk to God when you take out the garbage?”
My mother believed that God appreciated her busy schedule, and the time she created for her devotion. She explained that her walk to the garbage cans was quiet and solitary. She could see the stars in the night sky. That was enough to turn her thoughts from the mundane to the mystical.
Remembering this childhood lesson eased my transition to my own motherhood. I learned to approach every task as a spiritual ritual.
To this day, I practice spiritual observance in single moments, especially when single moments are all the free time my life offers me. I encourage my busy friends and clients to do the same. A single conscious breath, gratitude for nature around us, a sacred moment of connection is sometimes all our time and energy will allow. These moments are enough for us to recharge, to center, to ground, and to stay in our guidance.

In this intensive, you will learn how to combine divination methods with tarot. Whether you are a professional reader, aspiring pro, or simply using divination on your personal journey, these skills will take you to the next level.
Make you plan to join us at StaarCon 2024.
Sacred Moments with Tarot
Some of you know that I am an advocate for longer tarot readings with lots of cards. Sometimes, though, a busy life does not allow us to linger over our cards, ask further questions, or deeply explore the possible meanings of every card combination.
Sometimes a single well-phrased question needs to be enough. Sometimes a single card needs to be enough to answer that question.
If you are not sure how to phrase the right question, you can simply ask “What do I need to know right now?”
What is the best way to interpret a single card in a quick reading?
Often, your first intuitive response to the card you pulled is the most accurate and organic quick reading you can give yourself. However, that first response should not be based on fear or upset.
Make sure you check in with yourself to make sure your interpretation is based on your reading of the card, rather than an emotional response to the image.
It is a good idea to keep a tarot journal and write the date and time and the name of the card you pulled. If you have time, jot down a few of your thoughts about the card. If you do not have time to do this, that is okay. Later, you can come back to your tarot journal and record your thoughts of how the card informed your day, even after the fact.
If you only have a single moment to spend with tarot, you can still make that moment sacred and helpful.

Creation and Divination
How can we be creative in our divination when we have very little free time?
Here is a quick exercise for those who have learned tarot well enough to remember at least one image and title for each of the seventy-eight cards.
You can do this exercise at work, upon rising, at the gym, or anywhere else you might find yourself with only a minute to spare.
Take a moment and breathe. Ask your higher self, subconscious mind, or spirit guides to send you a tarot image for your immediate guidance. As you inhale, let a tarot image come to your mind.
Which card is it? What does it mean to you? Why do you think this image is the one that came to you mind at this moment?
