Inspiration Ignition Initiation
Sometimes it is hard to find motivation. Overthinking only makes matters worse.
Every day I speak with people who feel that they need more inspiration. Others have great ideas but do not know how to take the first step, or the next step, to turn their inspiration into something tangible.
If this results from a lack of logistical knowledge, the first step, or the next step, might likely be Google. Whether you want to fly a kite, publish a book, find a new doctor, or take a class, typing “How do I . . .?” into the Google search bar will very often get you to where you need to be.
Sometimes, though, we fail to initiate for reasons that require more soul-searching than Google searching. Perhaps we do not believe in our ability to succeed. Maybe we worry that people will criticize us or ridicule us. Although soul-searching is necessary and inevitable, there may come a time when thinking and overthinking become part of the problem.
When that happens, I like to employ what I call ‘The Nike Philosophy”. We all know the Nike slogan, “Just Do It!” Sometimes, this three-word slogan feels like a powerful magic spell. When we stop thinking and start doing, we open the possibility for forward motion and success.
Inspiration comes more easily when our brain is clear. Unfortunately, our anxious thoughts can sometimes dampen the spark of ignition that takes inspiration from an idea to reality.
Of course, using our brains for planning, contemplation, and creating is wise. But when our brain stops helping, it becomes time to employ the magic of the Nike Philosophy and Just Do It!

The Cards That Inspire
Tarot itself is inspirational in so many ways. Interestingly, many tarot cards in the deck are associated with new beginnings, new ideas, and initiation. Of course, the Four Aces are all about inspiration, ignition, and fresh starts. The Magician is about initiation. The Wheel of Fortune may be poised to offer you something new. Death and Judgment both offer endings and new beginnings. The Fool asks us to take a leap of faith into a new journey.
There are also many cards that encourage us to keep going once our journey has begun.
When we study tarot, these images and their messages energize us, even on a subconscious level. When we read tarot, we find direction and insight. When we do tarot magic, we direct the energies of the cards toward our best outcome.
How do you use tarot to inspire and keep you on track?
You might design and perform specific tarot spreads to give you information and inspiration. You might do tarot magic with the four Aces to support a new project or encourage a new opportunity.
A daily card might give you the insight to stay true to your path.
When you need inspiration, motivation, or clarity on the next step, you can shuffle and ask for clarity, inspiration, or whatever you think you need and pull a single card.
Through studying and practicing tarot, we can stay inspired to do what we have to and want to do.

Creation and Divination
Many of my creative divination friends are writers like me. All writers know the struggle of seeing a project through from the moment of inspiration to the finished work.
What many of my writer friends do not know is that tarot can be a massive source of inspiration for the writing process.
While several books, decks, and blogs help you use tarot in your writing process, I believe the definitive work on the subject is Tarot for Writers by Corrine Kenner.
If you have even a passing interest in tarot and a desire to write more effectively, this book can help you. If you are already a tarot enthusiast, this book will give you some inspiration for your creativity.
A teacher once told me that every good tarot reader must also be a tarot writer. I think there is some truth to this. If you are stuck in your desire to write or write more, let tarot help you!

When Can You Trust Yourself?
We can only trust ourselves if we tell ourselves the truth.
So often we encourage each other to trust ourselves more. It comes up in tarot readings all the time! We second-guess ourselves and believe that other people know more than we do. We are right to work on trusting ourselves better and more. It makes sense that tarot would nudge us in that direction.
Yet, there is a catch.
Sometimes people can be the worst keepers of their own truth. Typically, this results from emotional abuse or neglect in childhood or long-term relationships.
For example, if you have been repeatedly told you are lazy or stupid, you will believe and trust it. The false narrative of your laziness and stupidity will become your truth.
Before we can genuinely trust ourselves, we must unpack the false things we have been told and the false things we have told ourselves.
Another way we may become untrustworthy to ourselves is when we hold too firmly to a fear, a desire, or a belief. Our growth requires that we consistently reexamine our feelings, our beliefs, and our goals.
Our understanding of the world around us and our place in it must constantly evolve. We become solid in our sense of self when we allow that evolution.

Compassionate Detachment
They say that the cards never lie. Over many years I have found this to be true. Yet, we tarot readers can sometimes get the interpretation wrong.
Tarot speaks truth and can help us know and live our truth. Yet, this can only happen when we can trust the interpretation. This is true in self-reading, casual reading, and professional reading.
The best way to perform a trustworthy reading is from a place of compassionate detachment.
To do that, try the following in a meditative state just before your reading.
Affirm your desire for the best possible outcome. Affirm your understanding that you (or your querent) will embrace and endure whatever comes. Release any attachment that you have to the outcome. If you are reading for someone else, either casually or professionally, acknowledge that you will have the presence of mind to deliver whatever information you get with compassion and honesty. If you are reading for yourself, recognize your commitment to using whatever information you receive for the best possible outcome.
This practice of compassionate detachment allows intuition to thrive and truth to come forward.

Creation and Divination
I use creativity to find new ideas, lessons, and guidance from specific groups of tarot cards. For example, we first learn that tarot Aces are about new beginnings. After some introspection, I also discovered that the Aces can each represent the essence of their suit element.
When speaking with some tarot friends recently, I began thinking about the tarot Sevens. Usually, I believe the Sevens represent the journey of the individual. But now, I am adding to that. Or, more specifically, diving into that concept of the individual’s journey to include and emphasize the journey toward personal truth and trust.
The Seven of Swords is easy to see in this context. Often known as ‘the thieves’ card, the Seven of Swords can ask us to be clear about our truth, and our own moral compass.
The Seven of Pentacles image in the Waite-Smith deck was meant to depict the Irish Potato Famine. However, in modern times we have become kinder in our interpretation of this card, suggesting that a harvest will come with hard work.
I can easily see trust issues within this card. Can we trust that the harvest will be there? Can we trust ourselves to do the work to make it happen?
The Seven of Wands depicts a defensive posture. The question here is straightforward. Are we right to be defensive and to set boundaries, or should we be more trusting of those around us?
The Seven of Cups depicts a fantasy, or an array of choices. This card asks us which things we want and can trust, and which things we should pass by.
The Major Arcana Seven is the Chariot. Here, we must trust our path and our journey. The black and white steeds remind us that every truth has nuances and that every journey must allow differences, choices, collaborations, and compromises.
Do you find wisdom about truth and trust in the Sevens of tarot?

On Retreat
We all need time for recreation and reflection.
In the United States, this weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, and this coming Monday is Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a somber holiday. This is a time to remember and appreciate the sacrifice of those who lost their lives while serving in our military.
At the same time, Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial official start of the summer season. When I lived up north, I looked forward to Memorial Day Weekend for the first cookouts and camping trips of the summer season.
The dichotomy of celebrating a somber occasion with highly anticipated outdoor parties may not be as strange as it sounds.
We all need times of retreat. That is, we need time to get away from our daily lives. We need time to focus on our personal needs, whether those are more social, more introspective, or both.
Sometimes, a time of celebration and indulgence brings us the healing we need. Sometimes, the rejuvenation we need comes from quiet connection with nature, or time spent in spiritual practice. Often, we can do all these sorts of activities during a long weekend.
Throughout the year, if we are fortunate, we have opportunities to attend planned retreats, conferences and other gatherings for healing, growth, and connection with likeminded people.
Daily, we can develop short practices of journaling, yoga, divination, study, and meditation to keep us balanced.
Whatever you do this weekend, know that solemn remembrance and fun are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Know, too, that we all need times of retreat, whether formal or informal.
Very often we feel guilty when we take time for ourselves. Yet, the time that we take to reflect, to heal, to grow, and to refresh is a great investment in our future wellbeing and happiness.

Please make your plans to join us for the world’s only international multi-track hybrid tarot and divination conference, StaarCon 2024.
Retreat With a Tarot Card
You can get a quick reset with tarot whenever you need it.
Simply set aside whatever time you can afford, be it five minutes, thirty minutes, or a bit more.
Start by spending a few moments in conscious breathing.
Shuffle your tarot deck. Ask for a card that will give you insight, healing, and focus at this moment.
Pull a single card.
If you have only a short time, breathe with the card and see how the energy of the card you pulled gives perspective, focus, or insight. If you have more time, you can meditate with the card, or journal about it.
A single card can be very powerful when your focus is retreat. When you look to a single card to give you knowledge of your inner self, or healing from trauma, or new inspiration, you can welcome a great deal of renewal in a short bit of time.

Creation and Divination
One place that creation and divination intersect is in the world of dreams and dream interpretation. What happens in our dreams can be influenced by the creative nature of our higher consciousness. Dream interpretation is a very personal and creative form of divination.
For as long as I have been teaching tarot, I have instructed my beginning students to sleep with their new tarot deck in a pouch under their pillow.
The feedback is always the same. Sometimes immediately, and almost always after a few nights, the cards begin to enter your dreams. This happened to me when my very first tarot teacher suggested that we sleep with our cards. I was pleased that the cards immediately entered my dreams. I was even more pleased when I discovered this experience is almost universal.
As a personal tarot retreat, try this. Sleep with your cards under your pillow. Then, when you awaken, write down your dream. Consider the ways in which your cards have influenced your dream.
Then, create and perform a tarot spread to interpret your dream.
This allows you an opportunity for deep introspection of the cards, and of your most internal self, in a single exercise.
When you dream with tarot you are engaging your higher consciousness, your spirit team, and your own creativity in an exercise of personal introspection.

Does Everything Happen for a Reason?
How can spirituality help us process difficulty, and how can it hurt?
One of the most comforting yet also disturbing spiritual beliefs I have encountered is this.
Everything happens for a reason.
In his poignant and groundbreaking book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl suggests that people can survive and heal from even the most horrific events if they can find meaning in their suffering.
It could be that we conflate ‘reason’ with ‘meaning’.
I am quite sure that not every terrible thing that happens has an understandable and identifiable spiritual reason behind it. Over time, I have come to believe that suggesting that a person’s recent loss was ‘for a reason’ is both unhelpful and hurtful.
The cycles of nature in our universe can run so smoothly that it can become easy to believe that any disturbance to those cycles must be the intention of some higher power. Perhaps, sometimes, this is the case.
If we can discern a spiritual reason for our suffering, it becomes easier to forgive and heal. If no such reason is available, we can still find meaning in what has happened that will fuel our recovery.
Life is full of heartache. Perhaps the greatest meaning we derive from this is the challenge to find the beauty and joy in life, nonetheless.
The StaarCorner
On Friday, January 19, we will offer several intensive sessions at StaarCon. As you probably know, one of our goals is to teach a wide scope of topics and techniques.
This is why we are super excited that Amy Forman will be joining us to teach the art of lip-printing reading.
Whether you plan on attending in person or online, Amy will teach you how to read lip-prints for yourself and friends, casually or professionally.
We are looking forward to seeing you at StaarCon 2024!
Finding Meaning and Reason with Tarot
Very often we turn to tarot to help us process difficult things that happen. We look for the causes, both spiritual and mundane, of our difficulty.
Regardless of our own belief system, it is important to come to this process with as few assumptions and preconceived notions as possible.
One question I like to start with in this sort of reading is this.
If there is a larger spiritual reason for this happening, what is that reason?
If you ask this question and pull a few cards, you will get a clear sense of one of two things. Either the unfortunate happening is simply that, with no spiritual cause, or there is an actual spiritual purpose.
If a spiritual purpose appears, and this offers clarity and comfort, the reading might end after that single question.
If the cards do not reflect a discernible larger spiritual reason, another question should follow.
That question might be along the lines of the following.
How can I best process this difficulty?
What can I learn from this difficulty?
What gift might I find within this difficulty?
Where can I find support during this difficulty?
What is my way forward?
It is important to understand that even if we cannot see a spiritual reason for a difficulty we can still find meaning in our suffering. We can still find healing and a way forward through our spiritual practice.
It is human nature to want to find someone or something to blame for our trouble. Perhaps suffering can lead to the spiritual growth that seeks only to heal, rather than to blame.

When we speak of difficult happenings, the Tower comes to mind as a symbol and warning of such occurrences. The Tower can also give us comfort and wisdom as we work to endure, survive, and heal.
Here is a poem I wrote about the Tower.
The Tower
Yielding only to flame and destiny, and rendered into dust
The Tower crumbles and begins to fall.
The fullness of its destruction is inevitable.
Torn, falling, brick by brick, and wall by wall.
Is this a metaphor for some internal shadow journey?
Or a dark harbinger of doom, or worse?
Dread curls around your spine and laughs as you relinquish hope
Abandoned, injured, the weight of flesh a curse.
Pray you learned well the Fool's lesson; to leap, with faith, in good time.
Flawed foundations rock; ominous, frightening
Welcome the collapse, raining droplets of Spirit and dirt.
No fear in the storm; raging, releasing, enlightening.
Solid stone stands no more, yet burned and broken flesh is strangely
crawling, quivering, shaking, quite alive.
Ashes swept away reveal new ground, new hope, something shining.
The victory is simply to survive.
