Faith For the Future

If you follow any tarot content online at all, you know that the Wheel of Fortune is the official card of the year. You also know that the card of the year is derived from numerology. Last year, the digits that comprise 2025 add up to nine, so the card of the year was the Hermit. This year, they add up to ten, so the card of the year is the Wheel of Fortune. That’s simple, right?

Not entirely. In numerology, we usually add digits together until we get a single-digit number. Ten becomes one automatically. So why is this the year of the Wheel of Fortune, rather than the year of the Magician? And, for that matter, since the Sun is card nineteen, which also reduces to one, why is it not the year of the Sun? Is it true to say that the Magician, the Wheel of Fortune, and the Sun all carry the same energy since they are all ‘one cards'?

Over the years, I have discovered that there are several techniques people use for tarot numerology, and there is no single correct way to do it. We could easily call 2026 the year of the Magician, or even designate the three Major Arcana ‘one cards’ as the three cards of the year. Why don’t we do that?

Here is my theory about why we call this the Year of the Wheel of Fortune.  The last year of the Magician was 2017. At that time, social media was coming into its own, and tarot was coming into its own on social media. This was probably the first time in history that so many people collectively acknowledged a card of the year. I think there is a lot of community desire to keep counting forward until we get all the way to the World, and then begin again.

When we consider the similarities and differences between the three Major Arcana ‘one cards’, we know that they do not all carry the same energy. How do each of these cards express their oneness, and how do they preside over a year?

When we think about the number one, we think about new beginnings, fresh starts, and the center that holds everything together. Each one card in tarot is a separate and unique expression of the number one.

The Magician expresses its oneness through initiation. A Magician year is a year to begin something new. The Wheel of Fortune expresses its oneness through revolution. A Wheel of Fortune year, such as we are entering right now, is a time of new cycles and a time to recognize and change the undesirable patterns that we see around us. The Sun expresses its oneness as the central character, just as the planets orbit it. A Sun year is a time to take charge and make things happen.

For this Wheel of Fortune year, let us be aware of the good patterns we want to create and protect, and let’s be mindful of the patterns we are ready to deconstruct.

I was honored and touched to read this year-end post by StaarCon 5 presenter Kimberly Scheurer, The Medium That Rocks.

I loved this delightful account of a tarot reading from The Wild Hunt.

I am not willing to give up my smartwatch. However, these tarot-faced high-end watches are really cool.

Tarot Wisdom for the Week

Welcome to our new column! Each week, check here for some deep insights about the seventy-eight cards of tarot.

The Fool and the Tower

This week, I want to look at two Major Arcana cards together, The Fool and the Tower. At first glance, these two cards have very little in common. They are both Major Arcana cards, but they are very visually different. The Fool has a happy countenance; the Tower is an image of disaster that you don’t need to study tarot to understand. They have no significant elemental or numerological similarities. Yet, I often think of them in a similar way. Here’s why.

Arguably, the one action the two images share is leaping. The Fool is about to leap off a cliff fearlessly. The hapless characters in the Tower are leaping as well, but are far less likely to experience a good landing.

The Fool can ask us to take a leap of faith. Further down the road, the Tower is waiting.

Often, tarot readers say that the Tower is what the universe does when we fail to make the difficult change we know we need. If we don’t make the change on our own terms, the universe will make it for us, and we might like those terms less.

With all that in mind, consider this. If we do not find the courage to leap when the Fool tells us it’s time, we will most definitely leap when we are caught in a falling Tower.
