How We Hear Spirit

A woman walks the shoreline surrounded by birds.

Spirit speaks to us in many ways. Some people are born with special abilities that allow them to see and hear spirit clearly. Others work to develop these skills. We all can hear the voice of spirit if we know how to listen.

Tools of divination such as tarot, Lenormand, oracle cards, runes, I Ching, and pendulum help us hear our own wisdom and messages from the spirit world.

We can often interpret the dreams we have when we sleep as powerful messages from spirit—likewise, the thoughts and visions we have in meditation and while daydreaming. Sometimes, the random memories and ideas that pop into our minds can be spiritually inspired, as can our creative works.

As we move through our day, we see numbers, animals, words, and images. Sometimes, these things have meaning for us. We sometimes hear music that delivers a message that feels profound.

At this time of year, many people believe it is easier for us to hear the voices of our loved ones in spirit and wisdom of our ancestors. During the World Divination Association conference this past weekend, a few presenters said things that reminded me to listen and watch for spirit speaking and moving in my life at this time of year and always.

I love that teachers from different traditions come to many of the same conclusions. While the nature of spirit and spirit communication remains intensely personal and mysterious, the commonality of our experiences gives even greater meaning to our practices.

When we say we are communicating with spirit, with whom do we believe we are talking?

Our culture and belief system often determines our perception of that. I believe that whatever is true about spirit is big enough to accommodate our personal experience and understanding.

Many of my friends and colleagues often say that the universe is always talking to us; we just need to know how to listen. This makes sense. Listening requires paying attention to what we experience. We must listen past the noise of our thoughts and the distractions around us to hear the truths that reside deeply within us and the connection in which spirit enfolds us.

Divination Mediumship

Many beautiful decks and tools are designed to help us as we attempt to communicate with those in spirit. The more we can experiment with these tools, the more we can explore our ability to connect with spirit.

However, it is important to know that any divination tool can be used to communicate with spirit. Think about it this way. When you make a phone call, who answers? That depends on who you call. It makes sense that it might be easier to ‘call’ certain spirits with specific tools. On the other hand, you can set your intention that a particular loved one in spirit, or a particular angel or deity, hear your question and answer through your divination, regardless of the tool you use.

You can experiment with this and see if some entities prefer to speak through particular decks or if you experience that spirit will answer when you ask, regardless of the tool. Simply address your energy and question to a specific entity and pull a card or group of cards. Interpret the card or cards from the context of your question. Very often, you will get a message that feels very appropriate. Sometimes, you may feel, hear, see, or even smell something that makes you feel the presence of spirit with you as you conduct the divination.

From Around the Web

This post is three years old, but I was excited to find it just in time for Halloween. Here is a great article with instructions for five Halloween tarot spreads.

StaarCon intensive presenter Maria Alviz Hernando recently shared a great blog post, “What David and Goliath Can Teach You About Tarot.” Curious? Of course, you are!

Are you interested in learning more about mediumship? Here is a beginner’s complete guide.

Creation and Divination

This past weekend, I enjoyed presenting at WDAVE Big Bang. My presentation was about difficult questions at the tarot table and the techniques we use to answer them. That workshop inspired me to share an essential creative technique you can use in your divination. This technique will work whether you use it with tarot or other oracles and whether you do it for others or yourself.

This technique is based on the idea that most questions you might want to answer with divination have numerous questions surrounding them. You will get your best answer if you divine on all the questions rather than only on the question that feels overarching.

Begin by writing your question at the top of a piece of paper. Now, under that question, list every question inspired by your original question.

For example, if your question is, “Should I put my house up for sale?” The list of questions would include your current feelings about your home to help you explore this potential change. The list would include predictive questions about the possible sale itself. The list would include decision-making questions about what your next home would be.

From this list of questions, create a spread and perform it.

This creative method of divination is potent because the energy you put into crafting the spread will infuse your reading with inspiration and intuition.
