Fashions, Fads, and Trends

This week, we are talking about trends and why they matter.

A young, fashionable woman.

Trends aren’t new. I remember my mother talking about the fads of her high school years. Most notable were the poodle skirts and saddle shoes, which were in fashion for a full decade.

When I was in middle school, saddle shoes came back for only a season, but I had to have a pair.

Today, I see social media trends that are hot for about a week and then recede into oblivion.

The things we wear, do, and talk about used to last a decade. Then, it was a year or less, and now, things move even more quickly. Of the things we enjoy and discuss currently, it’s hard to know what will still be remembered or pertinent in a month.

Fads and trends are fun because they unite us. I know that sounds silly, but it’s true. If we all know the same joke, or are following the same story, we feel connected with each other.

I remember the yo-yo trend that hit when I was in fifth grade. Suddenly, we all had yo-yos and yo-yo skills. Big sixth graders who had never talked to me were immediately friendly simply because we shared a trendy hobby. I am sure that a few of my peers enjoy yo-yo-ing to this day, while the rest of us lost our yo-yos as a new trend caught our attention.

Trends unite us and expose us to ideas, styles, and activities that might be only a passing fancy, or that might become important to who we are.

At the same time, fashions, fads, and trends can be expensive, exhausting, and distracting.

It takes courage to resist a trend or to be out of current fashion, but sometimes, that is the right move.

Once we have lived on the planet for a few decades, we can see in our own timeline the personal trends in our lives and the things that became germane to our sense of identity. There are things in life that we enjoy only for a short time, and that’s okay. Other things are eternal.

This is true for individuals as well as for societies. Some things change, and some things never do.

For all of my life, I have heard people speak derisively about fashions and fads because they change so quickly. But that is what makes them so important and so much fun. We can’t allow ourselves to feel pressured to hop on every trend. But we might find new energy, ideas, and community when we do. Something does not necessarily have to be lasting to offer a valuable experience.

Trends in Tarot

There are many trends in tarot art, publishing, and how we think about and work with the cards. However, there are also trends that happen during a tarot reading.

When you work with many cards in a reading, you can see how the cards are trending. This can be a powerful way to find information from the cards.

What are trends we might see in a reading?

The most important are trends of distribution. Do you see cards of the same rank or number or the same suit? Do you see cards with similar images or colors?

The trends you see in the cards can add more to your reading.

For example, if you see a trend of Aces, you may note that many new opportunities are available. If you see a trend of Court cards, you may note that many different personalities are in the mix. If you see a trend of reversed cards, you may think the client is feeling upside down.

Pay attention to the trends in your tarot readings and see what new information they bring you.

From Around the Web

There are plenty of trends in the tarot world. Here are three articles on modern trends in tarot.

Here is an article about trends in tarot over the past ten years, from Healing Light.

An article about tarot trends from Acelion Tarot Team is designed to encourage you to create and market your own deck.

Liz Worth reminds us that we don’t have to follow every tarot trend.

Making Magic

There are trends in the magical world, too. When I first began my magical studies, Wicca was the only Western practice available to me. Now, because of technology, we have the ability to study and practice many different traditions. We are also able to see how we may have carelessly adopted practices that were not right for us.

Information technology and social media allow us to learn and study with people all over the world.

During the pandemic shutdown, I led magical ceremonies on Zoom. I had no idea how powerful that would be until I tried it.

One of the things I love about magic is that it is earthy and natural. Yet, technology has a place in magic. During my lifetime, the trend toward personal tech has been the single biggest source of change and expansion in my magical practice. I am sure others experience this similarly.

Of course, the important thing is to learn from all the wisdom you have access to but not believe everything you hear and see. This was true when we learned solely from books, but it is even more true now that there are fewer editorial processes between the teacher and the student.

Unfinished

This week I am thinking about unfinished projects and why we shouldn't feel guilty about them.

A young woman at work.

While packing and moving home and office, I discovered many unfinished projects, which caused me some consternation. I felt guilty for leaving things undone.

I don’t think I am alone in this. When Aces appear in a tarot spread to encourage new projects, many clients hesitate to embrace the encouragement because they have so much still undone.

We can feel unfinished in relationships and situations, too. When we don’t understand why something has changed or when we can’t have our final say, closure can be harder to find. We feel unfinished after a loss. That unsettled feeling is part of grief but can last far longer than the acute pain of recent loss. We mourn what was left unsaid and undone.

Using divination and mediumship to connect with loved ones in spirit, as well as time, prayer, and counseling, can help bring closure.

Unfinished work can bring anxiety, along with other undesirable consequences. Sometimes, we feel anxious about work we think we need to do but don’t.

When my mother became sick and passed away quite suddenly twenty years ago, she left a remarkable number of unfinished craft projects. Poignantly, I remembered that she had jokingly threatened to do exactly that each time she bought a new kit or learned a new craft.

As I considered my own unfinished projects and my recent craft store purchase, I processed some wisdom from my mother. There need be no shame in unfinished projects. Sometimes, something needs to marinate for a while before we can finish it. Sometimes, we need the joy of a new journey or the excitement of an unexpected side quest.

I hope to live a longer life than my mother did, but I also hope that when my time comes, I leave a lot of unfinished projects. Each unfinished project represents hope for the future. Each unfinished project expresses a particular dimension of our knowledge, creativity, and understanding. Each unfinished project is a testament to our faith in our ability to complete it.

The Unfinished Reading

Did you ever have this experience? After reading for someone, a few hours or days later, you think of something else you could have said in the reading that would have added a lot of value.

This doesn’t happen very often to me, thank goodness. When it does, there are two choices. One is to follow up with the person and give the additional information. The other is to decide that the reading was complete as it was; whatever messages were delivered were sufficient.

I have made both choices over the course of my career. Has this happened to you? How do you handle it?

Making Magic

Never be afraid to start a new project or leave one unfinished. Incomplete work is a magic spell of intention for the future, and a new project is a magic spell of initiation.

When we think of the energy that surrounds even our most mundane tasks, we can infuse them with a bit of magic. When we consider the mundane things in our lives, we can almost always find magic within them.

What We Create

We create the world around us with our thoughts, words, and ideas.

A woman creates a colorful painting.

A woman creates a colorful painting.

I grew up surrounded by artists. Although I was a creative child, I did not display the sorts of talent the rest of my family did. Over time, I learned to value my own creativity.

When I learned about energy work, divination, and magic, I learned about a different kind of creativity.

We are all constantly creating the energy around us, whether through intentional prayer and action or through indifference and inaction.

We create with our words and our plans. What we do in each moment can create new opportunities for the next.

I believe we are all called to some form of artistic expression, whether or not we are particularly talented. I also believe that the more we are conscious and intentional about what we are creating in life and in the world at large, the more we will create the world we want to live in and the life we want to live.

Tarot Inspires Creativity

Something I love about tarot is how many ways it inspires our creativity. Tarot is creative in that it is literally made of art. Even if we are not artists, we might go through the exercise of considering how we would illustrate the seventy-eight archetypes of tarot.

Sometimes, out in the world, we see something that reminds us of a specific tarot card. Our ability to make those associations allow us to find wisdom wherever we go.

Tarot may inspire us to create a specific card as a work of art. When we render a specific card in any medium, our relationship with that card deepens, and its healing energy is conferred to us.

Many books and decks help writers use the tarot as a tool for inspiration and character and plot development.

Whenever we need inspiration or direction for a project, we can create a tarot spread to help us.

As a tarot teacher, I always seek to create new exercises and experiences for our community.

How is tarot inspiring you to create right now?

From Around the Web

I love this article from the Hermit’s Mirror about the power of tarot as a creative tool.

Forbes seems to think that women are ‘reclaiming’ tarot art. I wasn’t aware we had relinquished it. Still, it is good to see tarot being covered in publications like Forbes.

Have you been watching Agatha All Along? I haven’t yet, but after seeing this article, it seems I should! Apparently, Agatha reads tarot!

Making Magic

One common magical concept is the idea of speaking something into being. That is, the idea that thoughts can become words and words can become form.

This is a Biblical concept and a concept used in magic, manifestation, and positive thinking.

Words, when written or spoken, have the power to create. This is true not only on an energetic but also on a practical level.

We can use our words and our voices to create what we want. We harness that power in prayer, poetry, incantation and invocation, spellwork, and our daily communications.

Happy Halloween!

This week we are finishing our big transition!

A tarot reading at a desk decorated for Halloween.

A tarot reading at a desk decorated for Halloween.

As many of you know, we are completing a significant transition this week. While I remain available for sessions, in person and virtual, by appointment, some of my usual offerings may be skipped, altered, or delayed, including this newsletter.

Tarot Topics will be back next week with all the usual features. Our regular YouTube Livestreams will continue as soon as we are able, or perhaps with continue with no interruption at all, depending on how the logistics work.

November TarotScopes may be a bit delayed.

Here is why this is happening.

The Palm City office has closed. I am now available by appointment at W Executive Suites in Stuart, Port Saint Lucie, and West Palm Beach.

I remain available for readings by phone, FaceTime, and Zoom.

I am excited for this opportunity to meet with more people in person at such convenient locations! Please call or text me at 561-655-1160 for more information and to make your appointment.

I am grateful for the five years we spent in Parkway Plaza in Palm City. Prior to the pandemic, we hosted the largest and last Holiday Open House, where more than twenty readers gave mini sessions in exchange for donations for the local food bank. We also had Ciro Marchetti come speak at our Grand Opening.

We enjoyed classes and gatherings before and after the shutdown. During the shutdown, the office served as a base of operations which allowed me to continue working with people virtually, and to plan and execute StaarCon, now in its fifth year.

Our monthly tarot meetup at Palm City Panera has grown over the years. We will continue to meet and nurture our local tarot community as always.

It is those of you who have sessions with me, attend classes, join our YouTube community, and attend events who made the Palm City office such a success, and have made possible these new opportunities for growth.

Thank you for your continued support of me and my work.
