Invoking Inspiration

Graphic of a person sitting on books looking at the moon.

What does it mean to feel uninspired? We all grapple with times when inspiration is in short supply. This can mean that we don’t feel connected to spirit, aren’t motivated to do our usual activities, or aren’t being productive creatively.

So many things can zap our inspiration. It doesn’t usually make sense to try to determine what is causing the energy drain or blockage. When we find ourselves uninspired, the easiest thing to do is to call inspiration to ourselves directly.

Ancient storytellers would begin their story by asking the gods for inspiration. We can perform a modern-day version of this whenever we need energy or motivation.

Rather than sitting in frustration or blaming ourselves for our lack of productivity, we can ask the energy of inspiration to come to us.

We can take a deep breath to bring inspiration into us, do a physical activity like yoga to raise our energy, and let our intention be to welcome inspiration.

When we lack inspiration, we need not panic or feel bad about ourselves. All we must do is invoke inspiration and let it flow.

Inspiration in Tarot

Which tarot cards speak of inspiration? My favorite is the Ace of Wands. We can find an interesting lesson in the connection between the elements of Fire and Air by considering that the Ace of Swords can also represent a certain type of inspiration.

The Ace of Wands represents creative inspiration, vitality, and motivation. The Ace of Swords can speak of a wonderful new idea or a new strategy to solve a problem.

When we see these cards poorly aspected, we know that some inspiration is needed. When we see these cards in favorable positions, we can assume that we will have the inspiration we need.

What differences do you see between the Ace of Wands and the Ace of Swords?

The Week in Review

Join us on YouTube Live tomorrow evening, Thursday, July 18, at 7 pm for a free tarot class, Finding the Stories. Each tarot reading tells a story, and the cards flow together. In this class, we will discuss how that works.

On Tuesday, July 23, join us at 7 pm for an in-depth discussion of the final three cards of the Major Arcana on YouTube Live.

From Around the Web

One way to find inspiration in your tarot journey is to procure a new deck. Sadly, many online outlets are selling counterfeit decks. It is always best to buy directly from the publisher or creator.

La Panthère Studio sells some wonderful decks, including the new Rhythm and Soul Tarot where many of your favorite tarot friends, including me, posed for the card images!

US Games Systems, Inc. is the oldest American tarot publisher, located in Stamford, Connecticut.

Red Wheel/Weiser is the publisher of many great tarot decks and books.

Llewellyn Worldwide has a wonderful catalog of great decks and books.

Making Magic

One of my favorite quick magical spells for inspiration comes from a Grateful Dead song. The first words of Terrapin Station are “Inspiration, move me brightly.” This is the storyteller asking for inspiration to tell the story and is a simple magical invocation.

To invoke is to call a spirit to you. Church services begin with a prayer called the invocation.

When we ask for inspiration, we are invoking that energy.

As with all magic, we can use elaborate rituals or simple magic. If we are feeling uninspired, we probably don’t want to perform something complex.

The next time you feel uninspired, take a breath, ask inspiration to move you, and see how quickly you find your energy.
