Let the Festivities Begin!
Children baking for a holiday.
Spooky season is now over, and we are immediately thrust into the winter festival season. I have probably always been more aware of the stress that comes with the winter holidays than the joy they provide, even as a child.
Wherever you are and whatever holidays you will be celebrating this season, I wish you all the blessings the season has to offer. The fact that there is so much conflict and difficulty around us right now can make it even harder for many people to celebrate holidays.
When I played the role of Miep Gies in a community theater production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” I was particularly touched by the scene where the families hiding in the attic celebrated Hanukkah together. In the play, they sang a song of celebration, which included the line, “Many are the reasons for good cheer.”
I have carried that in my heart ever since. No matter how dire our circumstances, there are still many reasons to feel a sense of cheer. I think we need to be careful about gaslighting and toxic positivity here as well, of course. Yet, our brains and hearts are powerful. It is possible and desirable to hold space for both a hard reality and hopeful optimism simultaneously. It is also possible to have spiritual gratitude, even when there may be little in the moment that we feel happy about.
Two years ago, I made a ‘no-Grinch’ commitment to myself and my family. No matter how salty or sarcastic I might have felt about the holidays, I would still embrace the festivities and allow myself to feel some holiday joy. I am making this commitment again this year, because it worked!
Of course, it is perfectly acceptable to ignore the holidays and wait for them to pass if that works best for you this year. But, I invite you to find some cheer and meaning in the season if you can, and to join me in welcoming some holiday magic into our hearts. Perhaps, now more than ever, this is the energy we need to move forward toward a better year ahead.

Tarot for the Holidays
While we often think Halloween is the best time for tarot, the truth is that tarot is here for us all year long, and there are so many fun things we can do with tarot at this time of year.
Tarot readings are a fun way to break the ice and start conversation at holiday gatherings. We can use tarot images to make fun place cards for our guests at the holiday table.
Tarot cards can also turn into magical tree decorations. Hang cards on your tree to manifest their specific energies in the coming year.
We can pull tarot cards to inspire our gift-giving. We can create tarot spreads using the themes of our holidays.
And, of course, when we get to the New Year, we can use the cards to predict the year ahead!

Communities
Many of us associate this time of year with charity. We donate food and toys to those who are struggling. We volunteer our time to bring cheer to others. This year, more than ever, the need for these services is great.
What many people don’t expect when they feel called to become involved in a charitable pursuit is how good it feels, and how easy it is to make new friends amongst the other good-hearted volunteers.
Everyone lives near a food pantry, soup kitchen, or shelter. This holiday season, there is every reason to be part of the communities that offer much-needed support to those in need.
