Perspective is Everything

When we speak of perspective, point of view, and how we see things, we are usually not talking about visual acuity. We are not talking about what we see with our eyes but rather how we understand a situation, idea, or individual. When we say, “I see,” after someone explains something, we are not discussing our eyesight but affirming our understanding.

This means that when we discuss perspective, we actually discuss understanding. This makes sense to me because when we have a misunderstanding with someone, it is very often because we have failed to see one another’s perspectives.

It is impossible to understand a person or community of people different from ourselves until we attempt to see things from their perspective.

We also need to observe and adjust our self-perspectives carefully. How we tell our stories and view our history can often significantly shape our future.

If we allow others to tell us who we are, what we should do, and how we should behave, we are dictated by someone else’s perspective rather than our own.

To understand and adjust our perspective about self, potential, personal history, and potential future, we must be willing to see ourselves clearly and kindly. We must be willing to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt and allow ourselves to be the hero of our story. We also have to see the truth of our history, not the cleansed history our family members may be interested in preserving or any version that vilifies us.

A helpful perspective requires both kindness and honesty. It can also take a bit of patience and creativity to release an old story and retell it in a more supportive way. When we can do this, we create positive change.

Shifting Perspective with Tarot

Nothing is better than a good tarot reading to help you shift your perspective. Tarot can show us new ways to see ourselves, situations, and those around us.

There is also a particular tarot card that invites us to shift our perspective and see things differently. That card is Major Arcana 12, the Hanged Man. The Hanged Man asks us to look at things a different way. The Hanged Man reminds us to focus where we have agency and not worry about what is beyond our control.

A tarot self-reading or a visit with a great tarot reader can help you change your perspective. Magic and meditation with the Hanged Man can help you do that as well. Spend time with the image and imagine yourself as the Hanged Man. What does it feel like to hang upside down, and what do you learn from that? Or, imagine yourself in a conversation with the Hanged Man. What does he have to say to you?

From Around the Web

I wrote a blog post in 2019 about changing your perspective of tarot cards in a reading.

Incandescent Tarot has some great tarot spreads to help shift perspective.

The Hermit’s Mirror has a tarot spread for exploring potential life shifts.

Communities

We form communities of affinity based on shared interests, experiences, and identities. We often expect everyone in our community to think exactly the way we do. We also look at communities to which we do not belong and assume that those community members are in lockstep with one another.

The truth is no community is a monolith. Even amongst like-minded people, there are different perspectives. When we acknowledge this and open our minds to hear the varying thoughts of people around us, we can learn a lot about the best ways to be in community, and the best ways to support the communities that matter to us.

It is easy to believe that there is only one correct way to think about things and get things done, but rarely is that the truth. We can grow as individuals and communities when we are open to those multiple perspectives.
