Do Something Different Now

Years ago, when I was working as a radio psychic and occasional morning show co-host at a local radio station in Connecticut, there was an overnight shakeup when our well-known morning DJ went to a competing station without notice. When I arrived at work the next day, the DJ was replaced with a substitute, and new motivational posters were on the walls, claiming, “The Only Constant in Life is Change.”
That quote is attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus. In over two thousand years, humans have not improved at handling change.
Change comes in many forms, and we seem to resist them all. There are expected changes that come with time that terrify us as we get older. There are unexpected changes to job, financial, relationship, or health status that can bring trauma and fear. There are the changes we plan and hope for, but still have trepidation when they finally happen. We also make conscious and unconscious internal changes to our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors.
When we consciously commit to internal changes that shift our perspective and allow us to think and behave differently, we create positive personal change. Sometimes, that is the hardest change of all, but the change that can make the most difference in life.
Change is inevitable. Yet, many of us are inflexible. We fear what we do not know, and we long for things of the past that often look better in the rearview mirror than they ever did in reality. We are so used to whatever we have been doing that it seems impossible to do something different.
Even when we know that breaking a bad habit or changing a mindset could bring healing and happiness, we resist making the change. Sometimes, it is laziness. Sometimes, it is fear that keeps us stuck. Sometimes, we don’t want to believe that making a change will make a difference. We often associate our lifestyle, work, habits, and behaviors with our identity and fear a loss of self when we change them.
When I do livestream readings on TikTok, I am amazed by the number of people whose primary question is about reconciling with an ex. Why do so many people look backward to a flawed past rather than look forward to something new and potentially better? The sadness of a breakup combines with fear of change to make moving forward difficult. Our memories tend to gloss over the obvious problems in ways that can cause us to repeat mistakes.
This fear of change is true for individuals, communities, and societies.
We must foster a sense of flexibility to be comfortable with a life in which change is the only constant. We must be okay with doing something different when what we have been doing no longer serves us.
So often, a tarot reading shows us that what we have been doing isn’t working and suggests we do something different now. If we can embrace making a change and doing something different, we open ourselves to healing, improvement, and new adventures.

Learning a New Tool
Many diviners work with multiple tools. Some tarotists are also astrologers, for example. Yet, most of us have our favorites. For me, tarot will always be the thing I know and do best. However, I have recently had some success with a more than casual exploration of the Petit Lenormand and the Elder Futhark runes.
While many diviners work to draw correlations between tarot and these two unrelated systems, the truth is that each divination system has its own traditions and its own ways of working.
To learn anything new, we must approach the challenge with a beginner’s mind. For years, I was unable to learn either runes or Lenormand because I just could not get out of my ‘tarot head’ and learn a new system. I feared changing the way I was thinking about divination. Now, I am discovering something interesting.
When I allow myself to be flexible and approach a new system with an open mind, I am able to learn better. As I learn the new systems, I am learning more about myself, divination, and the way I work with tarot.
I understand now why my mother would sometimes crochet even though she loved knitting best.
When we can be open to learning new things and new ways of doing things, we open up new skills and new opportunities.

Communities
So many people seem to live in isolation, without much contact with friends or family. No wonder there is a loneliness epidemic! It can be hard to find the time, courage, energy, and motivation to meet new people, especially if people we have known in the past have not treated us well.
In tarot, the card that most often describes loneliness is Major Arcana Nine, the Hermit. We can learn something about loneliness and isolation from this card.
The Hermit refers to loneliness and old age but also to patience and wisdom. The Hermit reminds us that being alone does not have to be synonymous with being lonely.
In many modern decks, the Hermit holds a lamp, which, in theory, might attract the right seekers to him.
If you are lonely but not interested in spending time with dull and unwise people, consider the magic of the Hermit.
Imagine a bright light, like the lamp of the Hermit, above your head. This beacon of light will attract the right people to you.
Whether you are looking for a community of like-minded people or just a few friends to hang with, this visualization with the Hermit can help you find your people, no matter how isolated you feel.
If you are used to being alone and lonely, being more social may be a bit anxiety-producing. Yet, this change could open up a whole new world for you.
