How We Interpret Signs
Illustration of a woman with a giant four-leaf clover.
Humans look for divine guidance and signs from the universe, even when not specifically trained or intending to do so. We all seem to have a natural desire and ability to find omens around us. I fully believe that human beings are designed for divination.
Yet, what we aren’t always inherently skilled at is thoughtful interpretation. This means that people will often take note of a synchronicity, interpret it in the way that feels most obvious to them, and then be disappointed and confused when things don’t turn out the way they expected.
For example, imagine applying for your dream job and then taking note of what you see and hear around you. Perhaps your social media is suddenly flooded with articles about new jobs. You happen to watch a spider catch a fly. You made it to the interview, hitting zero red lights, and you dreamt of a loved one in spirit. You may see all of those things as positive messages telling you that you will indeed get the job.
If you do get the job, you now believe you can make accurate predictions for your future based on the signs around you. If you don’t get the job, you now believe that paying attention to signs around you is pointless. Worse, you may feel cheated or lied to by the universe.
I fully believe that Spirit communicates with us through signs, omens, and divination. But I also know that interpretation is key. What if the jobseeker in my example instead interpreted those omens as a sign that they were on the right path? That way, they would feel supported in their job hunt, whether or not they landed that particular job. What would happen if we all learned to see omens more as affirmation and support from the universe, rather than as binary predictions of immediate success?
I saw a video recently that discusses the nature of Higher Power this way. ‘God is a certain kind of flow.’ This makes sense to me. However we may see Higher Power or whatever traditions we follow, there are times we feel we are in that flow of energy, and other times we feel more separated from it.
My experience is that when I am in the flow, everything goes more smoothly. I think sometimes signs and synchronicities present themselves to let us know we are moving with the flow of energy. That affirmation can encourage us, and I think encouragement is exactly the goal.
I think it is very rare for Spirit to try to tell us the specifics of our future successes in advance. We have free will by design. I do think Spirit loves to encourage us to get on the best path and stay there, working toward our goals. We cannot always interpret that encouragement as a promise of immediate results. Yet we can be grateful to see the signs that tell us we are on the best path for us to achieve our goals.

What Are the Signs?
I believe that each one of us has an internal lexicon of personal signs and symbols. Some people look for numbers or words. Other people find signs in nature. Some pay attention to songs they hear playing when they are out and about.
I am sure there are websites or books that will allow you to look up a particular bird, plant, insect, or cloud formation to discover a pre-determined spiritual significance, just as we have dream dictionaries for a similar purpose.
I personally believe that those sorts of symbolic dictionaries are largely lazy and unhelpful. Even in formal divination, such as tarot or runes, we understand that a symbol often means something specific to each individual. Yes, there are traditions we need to learn. Yet our personal experience with each card or symbol is where the magic really happens.
When we are moving through the world and see something that feels like a sign, it is up to us to determine whether what we are experiencing is significant and to determine what it might mean.
Viewed a certain way, the entire world is an oracle. Rather than deciding that a cardinal means one thing and a shooting star means another, our process should be to experience the energy around us in real time and then use our logic and intuition to decipher its meaning.

Tarot Wisdom For the Week
How do we know that a butterfly we see or a song we hear is something more than a random event? I think most people would say that we must feel the meaning intuitively.
In tarot, one of the cards that we most often associate with intuition is the High Priestess. She can represent balance, the subconscious, secrecy, wisdom, perfection, and intuition. She is a strong representation of womanhood.
In the traditional Waite-Smith image, we see her sitting between two pillars. They are Boaz and Jachin, the two pillars outside Solomon’s Temple. One is the pillar of mercy, the other, the pillar of severity. The High Priestess sits between them.
These pillars give us important insight into how we use our intuition. We cannot be too positive or too negative. Just like the High Priestess, we must sit between mercy and severity as we interpret the signs and symbols we receive.
