Daily Grind or Daily Practice?

A woman meditates in a busy office.

As we enter the third month of 2026 and Mercury enters its first retrograde of the year, many people find that the enthusiastic commitments they made on January First to improve their daily routines are starting to succumb to the grind.

Let’s face it. As spiritual seekers, we know that it is our duty and our pleasure to find joy in each moment. Yet many moments are taken up with tasks we don’t enjoy and with people who don’t inspire us. There are always stressors, both ongoing and new. It is easy to feel ground down by the daily grind.

Many people commit to a daily well-being practice. They do yoga, journal, or make sure they get to the gym every day. I always admire people who have a committed personal practice. I am aware that not everyone has the personality or the fortitude to accomplish this. Some of us just try to pay attention to our well-being of body, mind, and spirit as time allows. Often, we discover that time doesn’t seem to allow us to get much done for ourselves when our first commitment is to our bosses, families, and projects.

I have finally learned that feeling guilty about abandoning my best intentions to do yoga every day is further detrimental to my well-being. At least, if I can’t get on my mat every day, I can work on self-acceptance, I guess.

But what can we do when the daily grind takes over our daily practice? Sometimes, we have to find a way to make our daily tasks less grinding. Maybe we need an attitude adjustment or a slight change to the schedule. Maybe we need better self-talk or a strategy for a career change. Maybe we need to ask for help or delegate tasks. It’s important to recognize when life starts to feel chaotic or unsupportive, and to take even the smallest steps to improve it.

Are daily practices such as yoga, meditation, divination, writing, devotion, and exercise important? I think they are, but I think we need to be gentle with ourselves when we miss a day or a week.

So many people try to sell us the perfect recipe for work-life balance. I am not sure that such a thing really exists. I do know that we can find a sense of balance when we are mindful in our daily routines and try to make time for the things that bring us joy, peace, perspective, and wisdom.

The StaarCorner

The first tarot conferences I attended and spoke at in the late 1990s featured only tarot presentations. When we began StaarCon in 2021, one of our commitments was to cover a wide range of topics. People who are interested in tarot are also interested in astrology, magic, well-being, and other divination methods.

I am excited to announce that, for StaarCon 6, we will offer some sessions on mediumship! On Friday morning, in the Mindful Room, Michele Leonello will present an introduction to mediumship.

Michele is an ordained minister and spiritual counselor with a master’s degree in Metaphysical Science. She is a medium and pet psychic. She will be speaking at StaarCon for the first time in October and will be available for readings in the Marketplace.

Many of our StaarCon community have already had the pleasure of meeting Kimberly Scheurer, The Medium That Rocks. Kimberly spoke at StaarCon5 and offered Spirit Circles during the AfterGlow.

For StaarCon 6, Kimberly will hold a Spirit Circle each afternoon in the Mindful Room. This is a modern-day séance. Only ten participants will be able to participate each day. You will be able to sign up at the beginning of each day. Kimberly has also agreed to continue online Spirit Circles on StaarCast.

Kimberly will also have a table in the Marketplace at StaarCon 6 and will be available for private sessions throughout the weekend.

Along with tarot and mediumship, look for sessions on runes, numerology, Lenormand, Human Design, and other fascinating topics at StaarCon 6.

Tickets to attend StaarCon 6 in person in Palm Beach Gardens are now available, along with guest rooms at the DoubleTree at a favorable rate. Get your tickets and book your rooms now! We look forward to seeing you in October!

StaarCon 6 Virtual Conference Schedule

Our busy web volunteers are entering the scheduled presentations for the StaarCon 6 Virtual Conference. The StaarCon 6 Virtual Calendar will now reflect the scheduled events in the warm-up to the conference, the conference events, and the AfterGlow events after the live conference ends.

This year, our video crew will have more cameras and better presentation options to improve the virtual conference experience. The recordings will be made locally to reduce sound issues in the presentation recordings and to ensure a better recording if internet problems arise. Our technical staff will have greater control over the scene, improving liaison between the virtual and in-person conference environments. The virtual participants will have greater inclusion in the live conference event.

This year, members of the StaarCast Community website will have the opportunity to purchase the virtual sessions à la carte through pay-per-view pricing if they don’t have access through a premium membership or a conference ticket. We are pleased to provide this much-requested feature.

A Card of the Day

One of the most popular daily tarot practices is the COTD, or Card of the Day. Yet, many people misunderstand the real power of this exercise.

A daily card is best used for study and focus. If you draw a card each day with the desire to study that card, learn more about it, and see how its energy shows up in your life, your daily card practice will help you learn tarot. If you pull a card a day to find focus and perspective, your daily tarot practice will guide you throughout the day and through life.

However, if you pull a card each day in search of a prediction, you will likely be frustrated and confused. A daily tarot card practice will make you a better reader and could help you be a happier human. A daily tarot card practice is not a way to get all the cheat codes on the day ahead.

Tarot Wisdom For the Week

When I think about a daily effort of any kind, I often think of the Eight of Pentacles. I had one well-known reader tell me that she sees this card as a card of repetitive work, carrying an energy some of us remember from an old Dunkin' commercial, ‘Time to make the donuts’.

To that point, I have seen the Eight of Pentacles appear for those who work on assembly lines. This card can indeed discuss a work process that involves making many of the same items.

Yet, there is something more that I see in this card. I see it as learning-by-doing. I feel that each time the craft is performed, the craft is perfected.

For a reader to really understand how they see the Eight of Pentacles, they must consider this card in conjunction with the Three of Pentacles. One of these cards is the master craftsman, the other is the apprentice.

I see the Eight of Pentacles as the apprentice, and the Three of Pentacles as the master. When the Eight of Pentacles appears in a reading, it may speak of a job-training program or an opportunity to learn something practical and useful. I also see the Eight of Pentacles as encouraging a daily practice that fosters learning and growth.

Some readers see it differently from me. They see the Three of Pentacles as the apprentice, and the Eight of Pentacles as the master.

Whether we see the Eight of Pentacles as master or student, we can all see the work that is happening in this card. I think the Eight of Pentacles may advise us to treat our daily tasks as a craft, no matter how boring or mundane they may be. I think the Eight of Pentacles may ask us to stay mindful and appreciative of the tasks we enjoy, and of the tasks we do not.
