Never Again

An unenthusiastic young woman.

An unenthusiastic young woman.

There was a story often told in my mom group when my kids were little; I have no idea if it's true. It was about a family who lost their home in a mysterious fire. One day, in their new home, their five-year-old daughter pointed to a lighter and said, apropos of nothing, “I will never touch one of those again”.

Whenever I hear an adult loudly proclaim, “I am never doing that again,” I always think of that small child, who, as the story was told, had learned an important lesson about the dangers of fire.

Yet, so often I notice that when adults are ready to swear off a particular activity, it is not as simple as the child with the lighter. For example, a person who has had a bad dating experience might choose never to date again. A person who had a difficult time while traveling might choose to stick close to home from now on. People can use a single bad experience to write off an entire category of possibilities.

When we have a difficult experience, we want to make sure we never repeat it. Yet we often don’t take the time to unpack what went wrong, why it went wrong, and what truly needs to be avoided in the future.

Perhaps, after an unpleasant trip, we might decide to travel again, but to a different destination, with different people, or using a different mode of transportation. Maybe, after a bad dating experience, we might be willing to open our hearts to a new person, knowing that everyone is different, and a new person might be a very different experience.

After a difficult situation, it is easy to become so self-protective that we deny ourselves new opportunities out of fear. The truth is, nothing in life comes with a guarantee – anything can go wrong at any moment. At the same time, good things can happen every day.

I think the trick is to analyze our bad experiences deeply enough to learn from them. Then we can decide precisely what we should never do again, and what experiences we can remain open to. We need to learn from what did not serve us and use that information, rather than simply react in fear.

The StaarCorner

This week, I want to introduce you to two returning StaarCon presenters, one who comes to us from the Pacific Northwest and one who is a member of our local tarot community.

Karen Winkel lives and works in the Pacific Northwest. She works as an electrical engineer, yet her primary interest is metaphysics. Karen has studied tarot and astrology. She is a Reiki master, a certified hypnotist, and a crystal healer.

At StaarCon 6, Karen will lead an astrology workshop about the “Big Three”. That is, the three most important aspects of a natal chart, the sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign.

If you have ever been to our local tarot meetup,  you have probably met Teri Salomoni. Teri is an artist, tarot reader, and practitioner of Strega, a form of Italian witchcraft. Her practice has been passed down through generations, and at StaarCon 6, she will share it with us.

While StaarCon is a tarot conference, we are excited to offer sessions on all aspects of divination, metaphysics, and magic. Please make your plans to join us in October!

Virtual Presenter Spotlight: Mitchell Osborn

Humor, Honesty, and the Hidden Language of Numbers

Today we're turning the spotlight on one of our Live Track presenters for StaarCon 6 and StaarCon 6 Virtual: Mitchell Osborn. If you've spent any time in the tarot and metaphysical community, there's a good chance you already know him. Mitchell is a Psychic Medium, Animal Communicator, Tarot Reader, Numerologist, and Transformational Coach with over seventeen years of professional, global experience. He's also one of StaarCon's most dedicated presenters, returning for his sixth consecutive year on the StaarCon stage.

Mitchell's approach blends humor, honesty, and compassion in a way that makes even the most esoteric subjects feel grounded and approachable. Whether he's reading tarot, channeling messages from Spirit, or communicating with animals, his intention stays the same: to help people recognize the subtle language of energy around them and translate it into confident, empowered decisions. His work centers on helping clients and students live from a centered, conscious place where their own inner wisdom leads the way.

What is he bringing to StaarCon 6?

On Saturday, October 3rd at 10:15 am on the Live Track, Mitchell is presenting Numerology: Discover the Who, How & Why of your Birth Date & Name, a workshop that goes well beyond the basics of what numbers "mean."

In this session, Mitchell will walk you through the three core numbers in your personal numerological chart: your Life Path Number (the "who" of your identity and the lessons you're here to learn), your Expression Number (the "how" of your natural abilities and the way you operate in the world), and your Soul Urge Number (the "why" that drives your deepest motivations). From there, he'll show how these three numbers interact with each other, giving you a richer, more nuanced picture of your personal blueprint. The workshop will also cover personal and universal years and months, along with other practical ways to weave numerology into your everyday life.

Whether you're brand new to numerology or you've been working with it for years, expect a hands-on, engaging experience that leaves you with tools you can use right away in readings, personal reflection, and client work.

A StaarCon veteran with deep roots

Mitchell has been studying all things metaphysical since 1999, training under professional intuitives and mediums from Cassadaga, Florida, and The Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. Before dedicating himself full-time to intuitive work, he spent more than 33 years in the wellness field as a fitness manager, personal trainer, and group fitness instructor for one of the largest medical groups in the United States. That background in holistic well-being informs everything he does: he sees the body, mind, and spirit as equally important, and his sessions reflect that integrated approach.

His modalities are impressively wide-ranging. Beyond psychic mediumship, tarot, numerology, and animal communication, Mitchell is also a hypnotherapist and works with EFT Tapping, Eye Movement Therapy (EMT), and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). He has presented at Readers Studio in New York City, teaches metaphysical classes in the Orlando, Florida area and online, and runs the Community of Transformation on Patreon, a space for ongoing spiritual learning and connection.

At StaarCon, Mitchell has been a fixture since the very first event in 2021. His past presentations include Healing & Transformation with EMT & Tarot (2021), Improv to Improve Your Tarot Reading Skills (2022), Tarot Improv and Game of Fortune panel readings (2023), Reading Tarot in Layers (2024), and Creating Unique Tarot Spreads at StaarCon 5 in 2025. Each year, he brings something fresh while staying true to his signature mix of depth and playfulness.

The Sevens and the Nines

I am fascinated by the relationship between the Sevens and Nines in tarot. Many tarotists see the odd numbers in tarot as leaning toward the resolution offered by the adjacent even numbers.

I also see a certain resolution to each Seven card, offered by the Nine. For example, the Seven of Wands and the Nine of Wands are both defensive, yet the Nine is now wounded and waiting for relief from his post. The Seven of Pentacles is a tired gardener, while the garden in the Nine of Pentacles flourishes. The Seven of Cups is confused about his options, while the Nine of Cups is satisfied with his choices. The dishonesty of the Seven of Swords leads to the inevitable turmoil of the Nine of Swords.

Do I see the same thing in the Major Arcana? Certainly, the Chariot and the Hermit are both on a journey of sorts.

What connections do you see between the Sevens and Nines in tarot?

Tarot Wisdom for the Week

When we are dealing with past trauma and trying to avoid trauma in the future, defensiveness is often the energy we use. Sometimes, this can be very helpful. There truly are times we need to protect ourselves. Other times, our defensiveness isolates us from the people who care about us, and from the things we want to do.

One card that can speak of defensiveness, both helpful and unhelpful, is the Seven of Wands. In the Waite image, we see a person deftly defending themselves against what feels like superior odds.

When this card comes up in a reading, it can be a vote of confidence about your ability to handle whatever is coming at you. However, if this card comes up in the context of describing an attitude or personality trait, your reading might feel much less positive. That is because, in the context of attitude, mood, reaction, or personality, the Seven of Wands illustrates a defensive posture.
