Happy Mother's Day

The family I grew up in gave only a passing glance to holidays like Mother’s Day. I do remember, though, in my teen years, that the youth choir I sang in would do a special performance for our Mother’s Day church service. I remember how exciting that was, and how all our moms really did seem to enjoy it. Now that I am not only a mother but a grandmother, I know how much any act of acknowledgment and appreciation means, on Mother’s Day or any other day.

I believe that honoring the sacred way we all came into existence is good for our growth as individuals and as a society. I also love that in the United States, we celebrate Mother’s Day in the most beautiful month, May.

I know that there are myriad reasons that the celebration of Mother’s Day can be upsetting to those who have suffered loss. I also know that we have all nurtured and been nurtured, and that nurturance is necessary, worth doing, and worth celebrating.

This Mother’s Day, my family and I wish you and your family joy, happiness, healing, and ease.

The StaarCorner

As we begin filling the schedule with our StaarCon 6 presenters, I am becoming increasingly excited about the rich, varied program we will offer in October. As you know, StaarCon is a conference that focuses on tarot, divination, art, metaphysics, and magic. That means we can cover a lot of ground.

At StaarCon 6, expect to learn about astrology, Lenormand, runes, Human Design,  Akashic records, mediumship, Reiki, and many other interesting topics. One of the things I love most about StaarCon, though, is that you will also explore many ways to learn, work with, and use tarot.

Tarot is such a versatile tool. Yet, we often limit ourselves when we need not. At StaarCon 6, you will experience the ways that tarot and theater work together. You will learn how tarot connects with literature and mythology. You will learn ways that tarot can inspire creativity. You will learn many techniques and traditions for magic and manifestation with tarot. You will learn ways that tarot can be a profession, a spiritual path, and an inspiration.

Whether you are new to tarot, a tarot pro just starting out, a seasoned professional, or a life-long aficionado, StaarCon 6 will help you broaden the scope of how you use and understand tarot.

Today we’re turning the spotlight on one of our Live Track presenters for StaarCon 6 and StaarCon 6 Virtual: Dr. Alyassia “Asia” Taylor. On Friday, October 2nd at 3:15 pm on the Live Track, Asia is presenting The Gates Speak: Human Design & Tarot as a Unified Divination, a workshop that reimagines Human Design not as a system of mechanics, but as a living, breathing oracle.

Human Design’s 64 Gates are usually taught through their technical definitions, but Asia has developed an original system that pairs each Gate with its corresponding Tarot frequency, weaving together Major and Minor Arcana symbolism, narrative patterns, and energetic signatures. In this session, she’ll walk you through how the bodygraph functions as a divinatory tool, how the Gates operate as living archetypes, and how the centers mirror the subtle anatomy of intuition, identity, and expression.

My Poem for the Empress

Of course, the Empress is the mother archetype of tarot. Some of you may remember my ongoing poetry project. I would like to write a poem for each of the seventy-eight tarot cards. I am realistic about the possibility that this project will not be completed. But I have managed to write a poem for the Empress. What better time to share it than on Mother’s Day?

The Empress

Easy to create, but hard to sustain
Wanted or not
Life wants to be

As common as dirt, brought in blood and pain
The mother knot
Formed perfectly

Uniquely human, both sinner and saint
Reflection of
Divinity

Tarot Wisdom For the Week

Ask any group of tarot readers which card they associate with a particular state of being, or a particular activity or type of person, and you will usually get a variety of responses. Tarot speaks to each of us individually and uniquely. Yet, if you ask a group of tarot readers which tarot card they associate with motherhood, it is likely that that group of tarotists would speak in unison, calling the name of the Empress.

When Major Arcana 3, the Empress, appears in a reading, she can be a sign that a family matriarch in spirit has a message for you. She can also announce pregnancy or discuss family issues.

Does this mean the Empress will always refer specifically to motherhood? Definitely not, but her energy becomes a metaphor. The Empress may appear to ask you what you want to bring into the world. To what do you intend to give life?

The Empress can also give a prediction for security and happy abundance, and a reminder to nurture self and others.
