The Power of the Ocean
Conceptual art of a woman and the ocean.
I spent the first ten years of my life on the East End of the North Fork of Long Island. Maybe this is why I feel so connected to the ocean. The times in my life when I did not live near a beach, I always had a lake or a pond nearby, or drove a few hours for a beach day at least once a week.
When I was first exploring Earth-based spirituality and learning to read tarot, I had a moment while swimming in a pond that felt life-changing when I found myself eye-to-eye with a frog in the water. That frog seemed to have a message for me.
Further study led me to understand all the ways that salt is used in energy work. That our oceans cover most of our planet with salt water is a spiritually powerful concept. The element of Water rules our emotions. Salt brings purification, protection, and preservation. The oceans are energetically like a blanket of emotional healing and protection on our planet. Perhaps that is why so many of us feel healed and rejuvenated at the beach.
Many religions and spiritual practices use water and salt as tools for sanctification, dedication, and protection. In a way, these practices harness the ocean's natural spiritual power, even when miles from shore.
Going to the beach, or thinking about going to the beach, always makes me think of the final stanza of the E.E. Cummings poem, "maggie and milly and molly and may." It's a poem about four girls at the beach who each find something that reflects their own personalities.
For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

The StaarCorner
One of the things we pride ourselves on is the wide range of subjects we cover at StaarCon. Wherever your interests and curiosities lie, there will be something for you. Yet, we are indeed a tarot conference, and we are also proud of the wide range of tarot topics we will learn about at StaarCon 6.
Whether you are a new, intermediate, or expert reader, StaarCon 6 is ready to take you to the next level. We will have three panel discussions about different aspects of tarot, led by Frank Kwiatkowski and Mary Ellen Collins. One of our headliners, Karen Rontowski, is a well-known tarot comedian. Bex, a tarot podcaster, will talk about everything she has learned by interviewing dozens of tarot pros. Author Stella Boheme will teach us her signature tarot reading style, a 16-card tableau.
We have deep tarot shadow work with Beth Conklin and Soul Spelunking with the Tarot with Heather Gaffney-Darnell. Rose Saldana will help you build confidence as a tarot reader. Ben Tomlin will help us understand the role of questions in a tarot reading. Danielle Maribell will help us explore the cards as a way of telling our personal stories, and Brenda Elizabeth will connect the story of The Wizard of Oz with tarot archetypes.
I am super excited about some of the interactive tarot sessions happening in the Mindful Room. Vicki Santell will help us embody the Minor Arcana, Amelia Joy will use theater techniques to help us explore the cards, and Arwen Lynch-Poe will teach us to let the cards do the talking.
Hilary Parry Haggerty will help us use tarot for spellwork, and Lisa Kessler will share her techniques for using tarot for manifesting. My Friday headlining session will be a series of tarot exercises for self-discovery, tarot study, divination, and magic.
This is not the full list of tarot offerings at StaarCon 6, but it gives you a sense of how much you can learn here and how far StaarCon 6 can help you take your own tarot practice.

Connecting with Water
We connect with water every day when we bathe and hydrate. Physically connecting with water is not always the same as spiritually connecting with the element of Water. Yet, one can do both at the same time.
When we spiritually connect with Water, we heal the heart and find emotional regulation. Connecting with Water can help us connect with spirit, feel the support of our loved ones and ancestors, and support ourselves.
When we go to the beach, we can take a moment to breathe in the energy of Water, and feel it calm us and heal us. We can do the same thing in the shower or when we drink a glass of water.
All we need to do is change our focus and intention for a moment, to welcome the element of Water and to receive its calming, healing effect.

Tarot Wisdom For the Week
Which tarot card most authentically carries the energy of summer? I think it has to be Major Arcana 19, The Sun.
In a reading, The Sun can speak of happiness, confidence, and success. Sometimes it can speak of egotism and narcissism.
Yet, sometimes tarot can be literal as well as metaphoric. When we were freezing in the Pocono Mountains and planning a move south, the Sun became my Florida card. It often appeared in my personal readings, encouraging us to move to the Sunshine State.
I often see the Sun in a reading to indicate the season, attitude, or activities of summer. This is certainly a simplification of everything the Sun can mean, but sometimes, the simple meaning is the most appropriate.
