Flexibility
If we do not bend, we will surely break. Sometimes we must adjust our attitude, our budget, our plans, or our expectations.
As we begin 2022, something that is on my mind quite a bit is the concept of flexibility.
There are so many ways being flexible is helpful.
On a physical level, being able to move the body is healthy and healing. When people tell me they do not do yoga because they are not flexible, I have a very specific answer for them. If you are not flexible, you need yoga more than ever!
Flexibility is not limited to the physical, however. We need to be flexible in our thinking. We need to be flexible in our ability to adjust to changing times and circumstances.
There is an adage about flexibility. If you cannot bend, you will surely break.
The more we can adjust to changes and flow with the energy that is present, the happier and more productive we will be.
This does not mean that we should abandon adherence to loyalty, principles, and dedication. It does mean that when circumstances change, we must change with them. The more easily we do that, the better we do.

Guidance on the Journey
Which tarot cards ask us to be flexible? Certainly, the Fool might tell us to expect the unexpected and run with it. The Tower warns us that we will have to endure something that will shake things up. Temperance tells us to find our balance, and to find solutions to our problems. The Hanged Man reminds us that if we cannot change our circumstance, we must change our attitude. The Wheel of Fortune reminds us that we must ride through the ups and downs of life.
Can you think of other tarot cards that speak of flexibility?

Metaphors
Metaphors are all around us. They help us find the meaning in life.
We learned about metaphors in high school as a literary device. In adulthood, many of us discover that metaphors can be a source of spiritual growth and understanding. I believe that the universe often speaks to us in metaphors.
One definition of ‘metaphor’ is ‘a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract.’
Sometimes we will have a small, mundane experience that causes us to think about something bigger, and more far-reaching. Sometimes a small problem will make itself known to us. That problem may be a metaphor for a much larger problem. The small problem gives us the opportunity and insight to deal with the larger problem.
We can find metaphors for situation in life when we observe nature. When we watch the behavior of an animal, we might see it as a metaphor for a current situation. From that, we may find wisdom and insight.
Understanding the power of metaphors is part of the journey of every person who studies tarot or astrology. In metaphysics and spirituality, we understand that symbols have power. They may have power to communicate, to inspire, to evoke, or even to invoke.
To understand metaphors from a spiritual perspective is to understand the power of symbols.
It is a mistake to think that everything we see or experience has deeper spiritual meaning. Some things do, and some things don’t. Yet, it is also a mistake to neglect to look for a deeper meaning, especially when we are struggling.
Metaphors are often the breadcrumbs the universe leaves for us to help us find our way, and to help us see our way forward.

We all have to make many changes in our annual holiday traditions this year. I am sad that I won’t be able to have my Holiday Open House, or my Winter Solstice Celebration at Dream Angels this year. Yet, that doesn’t mean the holidays won’t be merry!
I have added a full calendar of classes and meetups to my YouTube channel, and will also be teaching a class on Zoom.
I am grateful for our international tarot community, and for the technology that allows us to gather together all year long. If you are not already a part of these events, please plan to join us; we have so much fun and learn so much together!
Tarot Works with Metaphors
When we learn to read tarot, we learn that each card can be a metaphor for something that happens in life. Sometimes the cards will appear in a way that is really literal, as well.
For example, the Wheel of Fortune may appear when you visit a casino.
When you work with your tarot cards, look to see if any of the cards might be speaking of something literal. Most of the time, though, you will find that they speak most often in metaphors.
For example, Major Arcana 13, Death, rarely speaks of a physical death. Very often it can speak of a change in life, like marriage, pregnancy or a job change. We can see how the concept of death works as a metaphor in this way.
Very rarely will the Fool really speak of stepping off an actual cliff. Rather, it may beckon you to boldly begin a new journey. Or, in may caution you to look where you are going.
The Magician may not tell you to actually practice magic as much as it will remind you of the power you have in your life.
The more you look for the metaphors in tarot, the more easily you will understand how the messages of the cards apply to your life.

Cards for Your Consideration
Any tarot card can make us think of a metaphor or can ask us to look for the metaphor within a situation.
The Hanged Man may offer a particular message in this matter.
The Hanged Man is in an uncomfortable position. Yet, by accepting this and not struggling against it, he has found enlightenment.
Necessity has taught him to see things from a new perspective.
When we notice the metaphors in our life, and find their messages, we do the same.

Do Not Live There!
Positive thinking works best when we also acknowledge our difficulties.
I am convinced that good mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being require a very specific balancing act.
We need to recognize and cultivate the power of positive thinking, while not venturing into the realm of toxic positivity.
When something is difficult or hurtful, we need to acknowledge it. We need to grieve in order to heal. We need to know what is wrong in order to fix it.
Yet, if we stay focused in the dark place of grief and difficulty, we become unhealthy. If we refuse to acknowledge grief, fear, anger, and sadness, we become unhealthy.
This is why a constant mantra of mine has become, “acknowledge it, but don’t live there.”
We must be able to hold space for the things that hurt us. Life is full of disappointments.
We must be able to hold space for our fears. Life can be pretty scary.
Yet, we must not live in that place of fear, hurt, sadness, or disappointment.
When we are caught in a loop of negative thinking or hurt feelings, we must acknowledge our difficulties. Then, we must shift our perspective to something more positive. That could be as simple as distracting ourselves with something we enjoy. It could be as meaningful as consciously remembering the things for which we are grateful.
The more we are able to strike this balance, the happier we will be, and the more productive we will be.
In difficult times, we sometimes feel waves of grief, anger, or fear wash over us. When that happens, we must acknowledge our experience. We must consider what we need to do to feel better. Then, we need to make a conscious decision to not live in that dark place.
We find our emotional balance by learning to acknowledge what we feel, without taking up residence there.

Cards for Your Consideration
The Hanged Man is a card I love to consider when I think about the emotional balance of acknowledging but not living in a place of pain or fear.
While the Hanged Man can indicate a time apart, or a time of waiting, it can also indicate the new perspective that comes when we acknowledge the unpleasant things that are beyond our control.
About this card I often say this. If you can’t change your circumstances, you have to change your attitude.
The Hanged Man reminds us that things look different when we change our perspective.

Feeling Stuck?
Some thoughts on how we can get out of our own way.
It is part of the human experience to feel stuck sometimes. We might be stuck in a job we don’t love, or a housing situation that doesn’t suit us. Sometimes it is hard to find a way out and on to the next thing.
Sometimes we are stuck in a more internal way. We have goals but can’t seem to get out of our own way to do what we think we need to do to achieve them.
Sometimes we are stuck in a way of thinking, or a pattern of behavior, that doesn’t serve us.
Often, when our feelings of being stuck are more internal, and related to our own behaviors, we refer to our stuck state as being ‘blocked’.
We might say that we have a block that keeps us from moving forward, or that something is blocking us.
Sometimes we may think that what is blocking us in an energy that comes from outside ourselves. Sometimes we know it is of our own creation.
Very often, creative people feel blocked from moving forward on their projects. We have all heard of ‘writer’s block’, for example.
If we are stuck in a logistical situation, very often we may feel blocked from finding our solutions.
Sometimes the only way out of a difficult situation is to get through it, patiently and diligently, until the situation changes.
When dealing with internal and creative blocks, very often the solution is to change the way we think.
When considering a stuck situation, it is important to neither catastrophize nor minimize the predicament.
Sometimes it feels easier to stay in a stuck situation because we can blame that situation for our lack of progress or success. We know that, once we are free, we will have no excuse not to work toward success.
Feeling stuck is frustrating. The solutions may be practical, spiritual or emotional. The solution may require us to make a change, release a fear, or step outside of our comfort zone.
It’s never easy. Yet, it is doable, and definitely worth doing.
Divination, either for ourselves, with a friend, or with a professional, is often the first step toward making that needed change. We can commune with the Universe to discover the root of our problems and embrace possible solutions. Then, breaking free becomes our most likely outcome.

Cards for Your Consideration
There are only a few tarot cards that speak specifically of being stuck. The Eight of Swords is one card that clearly and poignantly expresses this energy. We may see this energy in the Hanged Man as well.
Yet, sometimes when I do a reading, the energy of being stuck is very clearly expressed by a group of cards.
Which cards, other than the Eight of Swords, are most likely to work together to express that stuck energy?
Often present are the Four and Five of Cups, and the Nine and Ten of Swords. The Devil, of course, can indicate a situation in which we have willingly chosen to be stuck.
I also often see the stuck energy expressed in certain reversals. Reversed Aces and Knights can indicate being stuck and stagnant. So can Death reversed, as well as the Six of Swords reversed and the Eight of Wands reversed. When I see Temperance reversed, I think that a solution has yet to be found.
What is interesting is that the feeling of being stuck, stagnant and frustrated is one that can be overwhelming in a reading. It usually takes a number of cards to fully express this energy.
When we see cards working together to tell us about a stuck or blocked situation, we can very often find the solution within those same cards if we look hard enough.
