Past, Present and Future

Our Personal Timeline

There is a traditional three-card tarot spread where the first card represents the past, the second card represents the present and the third card represents the future. We’ll talk more about the tarot spread and how to use it later in this newsletter. These three words are often used together to advertise psychics who want to give you information about all aspects of your life, the past, the present and the future.

Even outside of the world of oracles, there is a great deal of focus on dealing with the past, living in the present, and looking to the future.

Very often, the things that happened in the past seem to affect our present in ways that don’t serve us. It’s also true that we are taught to worry about the future and plan for the future in ways that sometimes make the present seem less important than the mythical future we are working toward.

Sometimes we get stuck in the past, feeling a longing for days gone by, or regret for something that we can’t find a way to make right.

It’s interesting to consider how the past influences the future. Anxiety comes from worrying about what might happen in the future. Sometimes remembering our past successes can quell our fears for the future. Sometimes the opposite is true. Past trauma can cause us to live in fear, thinking the same things might happen again.

There are ways in which the past might predict the future, but other ways in which it is better to think that it can’t and won’t.

The recent trend toward mindfulness teaches us to live in the present moment; not looking ahead to the future, and not staying stuck in the past. This is a good practice, to a point.

The truth is that the past is always with us, and we have some ability to try to take control of our future by thinking about what we want to manifest and taking those steps.

I think truly successful people learn from the past, enjoy the present and look forward to the future, all at the same time. Keeping that balance can feel like mental gymnastics, but the results are always worth it.

Back in Palm City!

My June 2019 Northeastern Tour is over, and I am back in my Palm City office. Thanks to everyone who had parties, came to workshops and had private readings with me. Once again, thanks to True Bikram Yoga for hosting me.

I’ll be back on tour in the Northeast in August. In July I will spend a little time in the Tampa Bay area, as well as in Fort Lauderdale.

I miss my office when I travel and am happy to be back for a few weeks. Make an appointment to see me while I am here!

How to Make the Past, Present, Future Spread Work for You

Whether working with tarot, runes or any oracle deck, the three-card Past, Present, Future spread is one of the first we learn.

Often, I see newer readers employ this spread with poor results. This is usually because the spread doesn’t fit the question. If, for example, you are wondering about a new relationship, there is no ‘past’ to see.

If you want to use this spread, make sure you phrase your question in a way that utilizes the timeline of your life. With the example of the new relationship, the question should instead be about love relationships in general. Then, we can see what was in the past, what is now, and what may be in the future.

Another confusing aspect about this spread is that it’s hard to sum up one’s past in only one card. The same can be true about the present and the future. Phrase your question and set your intention so that the card reflects some important component of each time frame that is pertinent to your question.

When you perform your reading, it is helpful if you use the names of the positions aloud. Say, “In the past, this is what was true. Now, I am experience this. In the future, I must be prepared for this”. Put the three cards together to tell a story.

Finally, remember that the ‘Future’ card might be a prediction, or it might speak to an energy that will be available to you, or something you should work to either manifest or avoid.

When used thoughtfully, the Past, Present, Future spread can help us understand our past, manage our present and manifest our future.

Cards for Your Consideration

This week I would like you to consider some cards that can speak to your timeline, and about time in general.

The Six of Cups can be a card of looking to the past, longing for the past or processing the past.

The Two of Wands can invite you to consider what you would like to manifest for the future.

The Four of Cups can ask you to consider if your present is what you want it to be, and, if not, what you might like to do differently.

Every tarot card can speak about any moment in time. Some of the cards have a particular relationship with time. The Hermit, Temperance, and the Nine of Wands can all ask us to be patient. The Knight of Pentacles can suggest things will move slowly. The Knight of Swords, and the Eight of Wands, suggest swift motion.

Whenever you work with the cards, consider if they might be speaking about issues regarding your past, present or future, or your relationship with time.

Heal Your Heart with Venus Retrograde

The planet Venus, associated with matters of the heart, went retrograde October 5. It goes direct November 16.

Venus retrogrades every eighteen months for forty to forty-three days. The first few weeks of this Venus retrograde is particularly significant because romantic Venus is in passionate Scorpio until October 31.

Planetary retrograde offers us a time to reflect, review and release whatever the energy of the planet happens to be. Since Venus is about romance, love and matters of the heart, and Scorpio adds to that a passionate intensity, this week is the perfect time to look back to our past heartaches and find ways to heal from those old stories.

During this time, we may find ourselves thinking about old relationships, or even planning reunions with loved ones from the past. We might be tempted to rekindle an old flame.

Most of us have suffered romantic loss or heartbreak in the past, and we have all suffered heartache of some sort, so Venus retrograde can bring up old hurts for many people.

Often, we tell the story of our old wounds in ways that aren't true, and that make the story more painful. Venus retrograde supports us in reviewing our old stories and finding new truth within them. You can explore the tarot spread later in this newsletter designed to help you do exactly that.

Within the tarot deck are many messages about looking to the past, the true nature of love, and healing the heart. Of special significance for Venus retrograde is the Six of Cups, which speaks of nostalgia and past love.

Beyond divination, there are many ways to heal and open your heart chakra during this Venus retrograde. Essential oils, yoga, journaling and meditation all offer an opportunity to release old pain and clear the way for new love.

Since it happens less than once a year, take advantage of this powerful retrograde to bring healing to your heart! If you find yourself feeling out of sorts this week, longing for the past or feeling regretful, you can blame it on Venus.

Venus retrograde is also a time to heal your relationship with yourself. Self-esteem can suffer during this time. Venus is associated with beauty, and so we can often become dissatisfied with our appearance during Venus retrograde. As much as you might want to, now is not the time to contemplate a major style change, but it is time to treat yourself to some pampering.

Remember, it's hard to love another if you don't love yourself. This week, be gentle with yourself, and take this Venus retrograde as an opportunity to heal your heart.

This hands-on workshop is an exploration into the many way you can work with the Four Elements in your tarot practice, and the many ways the Four Elements can help you understand your tarot cards, and yourself, more clearly. Bring a tarot deck or buy or borrow one at the workshop.

Tarot Key Words and Interpretations

If a tarot card can mean many different things, how do we know how to interpret the cards in a specific reading? Do we have to memorize card meanings? What if the classic card meaning doesn't fit in the context of the question?

Whether you are a beginner or advanced tarot reader, chances are you've struggled with these questions, and others, as you strive to makes sense of, and find wisdom in, your tarot cards. In this workshop, you will learn some easy-yet-insightful systems for interpreting any combination of cards in any situation. Venus Retrograde Tarot Spread

Here is an original six-card tarot spread for Venus retrograde. You can arrange the cards in any shape you like. You can try this spread with an oracle deck as well as a tarot deck. Feel free to expand each position to two or three cards if you like.

Remember that your past heartache may be from a romantic relationship, but could also be from a family issue, career disappointment or any other heartache.

Card 1. What is a heartache from the past from which I haven't yet healed?

Card 2. How do I perceive this story in ways that aren't true?

Card 3. What is something that is true about this story that I need to see?

Card 4. How can I release the pain of this heartache?

Card 5. How can I be a better friend to myself at this time?

Card 6. What can I manifest as I go forward with an open and healed heart?

Is a Message Stalking You?

How do you hear the voice of Spirit, and understand the message?

Is the Universe trying to tell you something? In This Issue Is a Message Stalking You? The Week in Review Classes in Palm City, Teuquesta and Connecticut Making Sense of Synchronicity Card Spread Have a Reading, Take a Class or Host a Party on my Final Northeastern Tour of 2018 Upcoming Events About Christiana Is a Message Stalking You?   Most of us occasionally feel that we are receiving a special message from Spirit. We divine with tarot cards, runestones and pendulums in hopes of finding that guidance from the Universe. We look for signs and omens in nature, and from the words, songs, and images around us.   We often take the common coins and feathers we happen to find as a message or gift from beyond. Some of us feel that specific loved ones in spirit communicate with us by ringing doorbells, flickering lightbulbs or sending aromas like tobacco or perfume.   Spirit communication is like modern social media in that there are so many possible ways to get a message through. These days, if you want to make sure your friend gets a message you can text on the phone and send an email and private message on every social media platform. The spirit world communicates the same way, that is, through many methods.   Sometimes we start getting the same message in a variety of ways; perhaps through dreams, divinations and the presence of significant animals, all in a short time span. Sometimes we hear the same unusual phrase several times in a day. Many of us have experienced 'stalker' tarot cards which keep appearing, over and over, for no understood reason.   Very often folks report to me the insistent feeling that they are receiving a message but can't quite understand what it is, or what it's about. I've had that feeling, too. It usually happens over a span of weeks or months. Then, a significant change happens, and I realize that Spirit has been surrounding me, and preparing me.   Then, the message is clear, and stops stalking me. The tarot cards that stalked me take on an added meaning I know I will never forget. The symbol that has stalked me, like an animal or a flower blossom, becomes something of power for me; something I use to build strength to handle the changes that are occurring.   Do these messages from the Universe always portend a crisis or unwanted event? Not at all! Sometimes they turn out to be predictive of a significant change. Sometimes the messages are coming from a departed loved one and are simply a form of conversation. Sometimes the message is one of encouragement or direction, like marching orders from the Universe. Sometimes the message is simply that you are not alone.   If you feel like a symbol, tarot card, theme or message is stalking you, pay attention to it, but don't let it trouble you.   Ask to have your message clearly revealed in your dreams. Seek a reading with a trusted friend or professional. Turn to your own divination practice. Journal and meditate. Talk with your friends Eventually, one way or the other, the message will become clear if you remain open.   Don't be afraid or impatient, and don't feel frustrated that you don't yet understand what you are hearing.   Simply be grateful for this evidence of your connection to the spirit world. Find comfort in the sign and synchronicities around you.   The Week in Review   There is a huge difference between giving a rote interpretation of a tarot card and giving an actual tarot reading. For instance, if you are seeing butterflies and cats, draw one card for butterflies and another for cats. If you keep hearing stories about Botswana and that feels significant, draw one card for Botswana.   Look at each card and see what it tells you about your symbol, and what your symbol might mean to you.   Now, take the rest of the cards, and lay them out across the table. Ask the following questions, one at a time. Pull one card from anywhere in the deck to answer each question, and then lay the cards down in any shape you like. August marks the first harvest. What are you welcoming in to your life? In This Issue Welcome the First Harvest! The Week in Review Tarot Classes and Parties in Christiana’s Conference Room! As a child I greeted the first day of August with mixed emotions; happy to have a month of sunny weather, beach days and Pocono Mountain vacation in store for me, and also knowing that the dreaded winter and a new school year lay in wait just around the corner.   Now, a new month offers me more than a chance to pay another round of bills – each new month offers a fresh start and a new perspective.   Many people great a new month with phrases like "Rabbit Rabbit" or "Pinch Punch" to bring luck into the month, or at least to ward away bad luck.   There are more effective ceremonies to set the energy for a great month. A tarot reading, for example, is a great way to gain focus and set goals for the month.   August First is a special date because it is equidistant between the Summer Solstice and the Autumnal Equinox. In many cultures, August First is celebrated as the first harvest of the year.   The term 'summer harvest' holds that same August dichotomy for me – on one hand we are enjoying the long summer days, but on the other, we are preparing for winter.   Yet, August First offers us the opportunity to ask ourselves, not only what we want to manifest for this upcoming month, but also what we want to harvest in our lives.   Now is a good time to think about the hard work you have done recently and consider your accomplishments. What harvest are you creating for yourself? Is there a particular goal you would like to dedicate yourself to this month?   How will you squeeze the most out of these last few weeks of summer, and still prepare for the winter ahead?   Welcome the abundant August energy into your life, and harness it to ignite your inspiration for the rest of the year ahead!   The Week in Review   If you missed Global Tarot Circle last night, you can watch it in archive on YouTube!   I shared a lengthy blogpost this week of interest to all tarotists. This is a great class for anyone interested in tarot, from beginner to professional.   This class is a free and informal event. You and each of your friends can enjoy a reading in the privacy of my reading room while everyone enjoys conversation, snacks, beverages and tunes in the conference room!   Three Cards for August Abundance   There are so many ways to use tarot to set the tone for a great new month. You can design a spread based on things you know you are anticipating for the month ahead. Or, you could simply pull one card for each week of the month to see what energies will be at play and available to you.   Here is a three-card spread I designed specifically to perform in the first week of August to help us gather our harvest, enjoy the sunshine and prepare for winter.   You can use tarot, or any oracle deck for this spread.   Think of a particular goal you are working towards – something you want to 'harvest' in your life. Hold that goal in your mind as you do this reading.   Card 1: What you must do or consider this month to manifest your goal or reap your harvest.   Card 2: What you must do to make the most of the opportunities of the remaining summer days.   Card 3: What you must do to prepare for the coming winter months.   You might decide to meditate on these cards and journal on them. Our topic will be "Oils for Intuition and Manifestation".
