The Power of a Question

Never be afraid to ask a question, and never be afraid to look within for answers.

This week I learned two new words. I love adding to my vocabulary. The most usual way for me to learn a new word is to say, “I don’t know that word! What does it mean?”

Asking questions when we do not understand something is vital to our growth. Sadly, many of us are embarrassed to admit we don’t know something. It seems easier to smile and nod and pretend we understand. I’ve done this more times than I care to say. My commitment is to never do it again.

The courage to ask a question gives us the power to learn.

Questions hold power in other ways, too. Sometimes, in a tarot reading, the cards reveal something to consider, to wonder, or to ponder. It is true that we look to tarot for answers. There are times, though, that the best guidance for us is to know what questions we need to ask of ourselves.

Asking the right questions of others is important, too. Sometimes we do not seek the right information because we understand so little about the topic that we do not even know what we don’t know.

There are many sources for information. We can ask questions of divination tools, books of knowledge such as dictionaries and encyclopedias, and trusted experts.

Knowing the right source for the right question is an important skill. For example, if you need to diagnose a physical issue, begin with your doctor. If you need help with the emotional and spiritual implications of your diagnosis, a good tarot reading can help.

Questions can be a powerful weapon when dealing with an adversary. The right question can help you win an argument or help someone see your point of view.

Never be afraid to ask a question. There are religious leaders who discourage questions as a lack of faith. Any religion, doctrine, or spiritual practice should be strong enough to know that faith and spiritual experience is deepened by our curiosity.

To be curious is to be engaged in life. To ask questions is to seek the power of knowledge.

Let the Cards Ask a Question

Sometimes the best answer a tarot reading can give you is a question. Sometimes a tarot reading give you a homework assignment. That is, something to do, or something to figure out.

We can use tarot this way as well.

A great question to ask tarot is: “What should I be asking myself right now?”

You can pull a single card, or a few cards.

You can also let tarot frame your question for a reading. Before a reading, simply ask the cards “What should the focus of this reading be?” Or, think of a question, then ask the cards if that is the right question for today.

When you are using this technique, pulling a single card in answer may be best. Once you have your question set, perform the reading on that question.

Allow tarot to help you ask the right questions, so you can find the right answers.

This week we had an exciting livestream free tarot class on YouTube. If you missed it, or want to watch it again, check out Finding Yourself in the Cards.

There are many different opinions on the efficacy and ethics of the questions we ask tarot. As with most things tarot, I believe that we each need to find the practice that works best and feels best for us.

I’ve written a few blog posts over the years about tarot and questions. Check out When the Answer is a Question and this piece about asking tarot if you should do something.

Tarot by Hilary’s take on how to frame questions seems helpful and wise.

Maddy Elruna has some great ideas about techniques and interpretations.

Even Cosmopolitan Magazine has shared thoughts about how to ask questions of tarot.

A woman focusing on her questions as a man meditates.

Guidance on the Journey

With so many different readers, authors, and teachers giving advice on what sorts of questions to ask tarot, or how to phrase questions, how can you know what techniques are right for you?

Each person’s tarot practice is unique. It is great to try different techniques and see what works best for you, and what feels best.

Beware any teacher that tells you that tarot cannot do something, or that there is an overarching ethical framework surrounding the way we use tarot. The only rules that matter are the ones that matter to you.

That said, much like doctors who take an oath to do no harm, we must consider the possibility of the ways we can do harm with tarot. Dire predictions, gossipy information, or questions or interpretations that encourage risky behavior may not offer helpful, healing experiences.

Whether you are reading for yourself or for others, the focus of our readings should be to help rather than to harm. Beyond that, the question you ask, and the way you ask, is up to you.

The only way to decide what will work best for you is to try many techniques, and see what feels best, and what offers the best results. Over time, your practices may change. You may develop new techniques on your own, or learn new techniques from classes, books, videos, and conferences.

A tarot reading practice is never a static thing. Allow your practice to grow and change, just as you grow and change.

The Balance of Blessings

What does it mean when we say we are blessed? How can we find and create blessings in difficult times?

This week I want to talk about the concept of blessings. I don’t mean the ritual and energetic act of consecration; this week I’m focused the way we process our gratitude for the good things in our lives.

We often say that we are blessed when a good thing happens. We say that that something that has happened is a blessing. But what does this really mean?

Both the Middle English and Proto-Germanic origins of the word ‘bless’ speak of the act of consecration, that is, to make something holy.

The Hebrew concept for the word ‘bless’ is to increase. That is, to increase in joy and peacefulness.

The Greek concept of ‘blessed’ is to describe those who are free from earthly cares and struggles.

In the Bible, the word ‘blessed’ is used repeatedly in the Beatitudes. Here, one understanding of the word ‘blessed’ simply means ‘happy’.

In 1958 Jack Kerouac coined the term “Beat Generation” based on the first four letters of the Beatitudes, saying that to be Beat was the radical act of showing kindness, sympathy, and compassion.

Many people use the term ‘blessings’ simply to mean good things.

Some people inherently feel that the blessings they count in their lives are gifts from a Higher Power, or the product of their own positivity. The danger of celebrating our blessings this way is that when we compare our good fortune to another’s misfortune, we may mistakenly feel that we are more favored. Likewise, when we suffer misfortune, we may feel that Higher Power no longer cares for us, or that we have unwittingly created our own difficulties.

Here is a way I have discovered to find the balance between celebrating our blessings, knowing that we are always loved and favored (even in difficult times), and holding compassion for others.

I believe that gratitude multiples blessings. Even in difficult times, we can always acknowledge and appreciate the good things that are ours. When we focus on that gratitude, our blessings seem to multiply.

When we see the blessings that come along with misfortunes, we often find the comfort and solutions we need to move forward, and to extend compassion to others.

It can be a challenge to find gratitude in the face of hardship. While we must acknowledge every part of a difficult experience, we can make gratitude part of that experience. When we put some attention toward gratitude, we make the best of every situation.

Gratitude and Manifestation

Here is a two-card tarot exercise to help us understand and increase our blessings. You can do this each day, weekly, or whenever you feel like it.

Pull two cards. Let the first card show you a blessing that deserves your gratitude. Take a moment to acknowledge that blessing and sit with your gratitude.

Then, let the second card show you a blessing that you can manifest in your life. It may show you an area in which you need healing, a project you need to begin, or an energy you need to welcome. Take a moment to interpret the card. Make a commitment to your action and energy to bring this new blessing into your life.

Guidance on the Journey

People often think of tarot as a way to take a peek at your future. Will the future bring fortune or misfortune? Will I be blessed or cursed?

While the cards can be predictive, sometimes in a startling way, many tarot enthusiasts believe the best way to use the cards is as a tool to create your own good fortune, to find solutions, and to mitigate problems.

One way to do this is to ask helpful questions. Open and proactive questions are sometimes better than specifically predictive questions. For example, “What do a need to do to get a great job?” is often a more helpful question than, “When will I get a good job?”.

We can also ask questions that allow us to use difficult cards to mitigate problems. When a difficult card appears in a reading, ask a question like, “What can I do to avoid this, or mitigate this?”

Sometimes questions such as, “What can I do to solve this problem?”, or “How can I heal from this heartache?” will reveal a better path forward.

Was Your Intuition Wrong?

Your intuition is never wrong. Yet, you might confuse other thoughts and feelings with the spiritual direction of intuition.

A graphic of a woman's face.

I had an interesting conversation recently. My friend had experienced a strong feeling that something specific was going to happen, but that thing did not happen. “My intuition was wrong,” she said.

That struck me.

We always tell people to listen to your intuition. We say that your intuition will never let you down. We say that you should always trust your intuition. Is it possible that your intuition could be wrong?

After a few moments of thought, I concluded something I think is an important truth.

“Your intuition was not wrong,” I said to my friend. “You failed to correctly identify the voice of intuition.”

This is the thing we metaphysical teachers so often fail to teach and forget to emphasize.

If the voice of intuition is an important guide, what does that voice sound like? How can we distinguish the voice of intuition from the voice of desire or the voice of fear?

Intuition is not the logical voice, nor the anxious voice, nor the hopeful voice. Intuition cannot be used for bias confirmation. Intuition does not care about cultural context.

Usually, when we speak casually of intuition, it is because of a specific type of experience we all have. It goes like this. You have a strong feeling about something but dismiss it as silly, or unimportant. Then, your feeling turns out to be correct. You kick yourself because you should have listened to that feeling. That conversation always ends with the admonition that you should always listen to your intuition. That conversation does not usually dive in to ask the important questions.

When we have a feeling that was confirmed to be a fact, we need to ask ourselves a few things.

What were the specific sensations that accompanied that feeling? What else was going on when we had that feeling?

Just as we go to school to become intellectually strong and we go to the gym to become physically strong, we need to exercise our intuition. We do that by figuring out what the truth feels like, and what the voice of our intuition sounds like.

We can only trust our intuition when we learn to identify intuition, and separate intuition from all the other thoughts and feelings swirling around in the mind and heart.

Three Ways to Use Intuition in a Tarot Reading

Intuition is involved in every aspect of tarot reading, from the deck you choose to the number of times you shuffle, to the questions you ask.

When interpreting cards, intuition can work hand in hand with your interpretation skills to provide an accurate and insightful reading. Try these three techniques to help integrate intuition into an interpretative reading.

Every tarot card has multiple classic keywords and interpretations. Use your intuition to discover which keywords and interpretations are most appropriate in the reading.

A tarot reading is not simply a series of card descriptions, keywords, and interpretations. Use your intuition to extrapolate information that specifically relates to the situation at hand.

When you look at a tarot spread, intuit which cards feel most important. Think about why this card might be important to the story. When you look at a tarot card, see if your eyes are drawn to a particular aspect of the scene. What might that particular image have to say to you?

Guidance on the Journey

There are two specific Major Arcana cards in tarot that are most often associated with intuition. Those two cards are the High Priestess and the Moon. Here is how we see intuition in each of them.

The High Priestess travels into the subconscious, and beyond the veil into other worlds. Her spiritual journeying allows her to see what others cannot. The High Priestess asks us to look within and beyond, as she does, to find our truth.

The Moon reminds us that in the moonlight things look different than they do in daylight. We must use our intuition to avoid missteps and pitfalls as we make our way through the dark.

When either or both cards appear in a reading, they may be a signal to look deeper, and to find the truths that are hidden. They may tell you to develop your psychic senses, and to trust your intuition.

Yet, both cards may, in a reading, offer more mundane information as well. The High Priestess can be about secrecy, silence, or perfection. The High Priestess may speak specifically of a woman, or attitudes regarding a woman, or women. The Moon may warn you of the treachery of a hidden enemy.

Sometimes readers memorize a particular meaning of a card and look no further when that card appears. For both the Moon and the High Priestess, that obvious meaning is often about intuition. While that may be a perfect interpretation in some readings, in others, you will need to use your own intuition to look deeper to find a more specific and helpful meaning.

Opportunities for Joy

We need to be present for all our feelings. Even in difficult times, there are always opportunities for moments of joy. Those moments bring balance and perspective.

Smiling woman outside with open arms.

As a tarot professional I am present for people’s feelings. One of the great benefits of having a good tarot reading is that it offers an opportunity to examine feelings, and to find strategies to cope, and to heal.

The cards will reflect all the conflicting, overwhelming, and underlying emotions. A good reader will present that tangle of feelings in a way that is easy to accept and understand.

I believe in the power of positive thinking. I also believe in the importance of holding space for every feeling without shame. Life can be full of grief, disappointment, and fear, just as it can be full of happiness, satisfaction, and courage.

One thing that I have noticed is that joy can be present anywhere, and at any time. Even in grief, there can be single moments of delight.

While we are coping with difficulty, those moments of joy are essential. Those moments of joy give us balance and hope. As we heal, we begin to experience moments of grief interspersed in our ongoing happiness. When we are deeply in grief, we have moments of joy interspersed in our ongoing sadness.

Those moments of joy make a good day better. Moments of joy make a hard day tolerable. Moments of joy remind us that things may not be as dark as they appear.

Opportunities for joy are common. A pleasant day, a well-loved song, a funny joke, a conversation with a friend, or a smile from a stranger are but a few of the opportunities for joy that might appear in any given day.

I see this as an example of how the mundane and the spiritual are part of the same whole. Something as mundane as a funny meme or a tree in bloom might give me a moment of spiritual delight. The joy I feel in that moment gives me perspective and strength.

When we are open to opportunities for joy, we find moments that give us balance, and foster our healing and spiritual connection.

Tarot Questions to Cultivate Joy

What questions can we ask of the cards to help us find our joy? Here are some ideas.

How can I find creative inspiration?

What is something I must release to feel more joy?

What is something I must remember about myself that will help me feel more joyful?

What is something I am grateful for?

What is an activity I could do that would help me feel joyful?

What joyful message does Spirit have for me?

This week I would like to highlight some of my favorite helpful books and authors. These are books I often recommend to people on their search for personal healing and joy.

Mark Wolynn wrote a fascinating book on inherited family trauma called It Didn’t Start With You.

When I was nineteen years old my grandmother sent me a book that was formative for me. The book is called The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. The author, Suzette Haden Elgin, has since created new books that supplement the original work which I found so helpful in my youth and continue to utilize.

It is very likely that you have heard of The Four Agreements. Visit the website of the author, don Miguel Ruiz, for some great wisdom on your journey to personal freedom.

Two women reading tarot cards.

Guidance on the Journey

One of the reasons some people fear getting tarot readings, and some talented tarot students fear giving readings, is the worry that the cards might reveal disturbing news, or unwelcome answers.

Sometimes people fear reading for themselves for the same reason.

Whether you are a perspective client, reader, or simply a seeker with some questions and a deck of cards, my guidance to you is the same.

The cards can help us see truth, and truth is always helpful. However, truth is not always welcome. When the reading is over, we want to walk away with less dread and more joy. There are many techniques to help that happen. Yet, there is one simple thing for every reader, querent, and practitioner to consider. This one simple thing can help each tarot reading bring joy rather than disappointment, even when the cards reveal outcomes that are not what was expected or desired.

In my opinion, tarot becomes much less helpful when we use it only to answer a simple burning question, rather than to perform a full reading.

There are settings, such as classes, galleries, and livestream performances, where a simple burning question is all that time will allow. Tarotists and tarot clients need to know that answering a single question is only the beginning of what we can do with tarot. Answering a simple question should not be confused with an actual tarot reading.

In an in-depth reading we can answer many questions. When the answer to a question is disappointing, we can ask further questions to bring clarity, healing, and a new focus.

When we approach a tarot reading in this way, we will always leave the tarot table with some hope, joy, and direction, even if we did not get the answers we wanted.
