Grace and Goodwill

I've been thinking about grace recently. Here is my deep dive into what grace means, what it is, and why it matters.

Three sets of hands forming hearts against the background of the sun.

I have been thinking about grace recently.

Growing up in the United Methodist Church, I learned about the grace of God. That is, the concept of forgiveness and redemption that is available to all.

At dinner each night, my family would say grace. That is, a short prayer to bless our food, and express our gratitude for the meal we were about to enjoy.

At dance class, my teacher encouraged me to be more graceful.

When teaching me etiquette, my grandmother stressed the importance of being gracious.

As an adult, I often get the sense that many of us need to give ourselves more grace.

This week, I decided to look up the word ‘grace’ and discover what it actually means.

I found ten definitions and uses for the word ‘grace’, and three primary definitions.

The first definition refers to being graceful. In this case, grace is simple elegance or refinement of movement.

Grace is also courteous goodwill.

Grace can also be a verb. In this case, it means to do honor or credit to someone or something by one’s presence.

The spiritual definition of grace includes the bestowal of blessings, and the free and unmerited favor of God. This is primarily derived from Christianity. Yet, I think in our modern times, the concept of grace has reached beyond the church walls and out into the spiritual-but-not-religious communities.

In looking at the three primary definitions, I am struck by two things. One is the word ‘goodwill’. To have goodwill toward all is not easy. To establish a sense of goodwill around oneself by building an exemplary reputation takes time and integrity.

Yet, if we treat all with goodwill and work to build our own goodwill, it is certain that we will always be conducting ourselves graciously.

My other thought is that if we view these three definitions in a combined way, we can approach the concept of spiritual grace.

When we learn to live with spirit, rather than in a battle with spirit, our energy becomes that of elegance and refinement as we move through life gracefully.

When we act with courtesy and goodwill, we bring blessings to ourselves and others.

When we show up for the people and things that matter to us, we are bringing grace to others and to ourselves simply by being present.

How We Forgive Ourselves with Tarot

Part of being gracious is to be forgiving. Sometimes the hardest thing is to forgive ourselves for past mistakes.

We can use tarot to help us understand and forgive our errors in the distant past, and in the recent past.

As with many topics, we can do our best work with tarot when we ask the right questions, and pull a card, or a few cards, in answer.

Here are some questions that you can ask the cards when you are working to forgive yourself for a past mistake.

Why did I do what I did?

How did this impact me?

How did this impact others?

What might I have done instead?

What did I learn from this?

Why does this situation make me feel so bad?

How can I reframe this situation?

What do I need to know that I have not yet considered?

Is there something I need to do to make things better now?

Creation and Divination

How do you express your creativity? Does your creativity influence or affect your divination?

If you have something that you have created that you would like to share in this column, or some thoughts about creativity and divination, please email me.

In tarot, one of the Major Arcana cards that expresses the energy of grace to me is the Empress.

We know the Empress as a card of motherhood, fertility, luxury, beauty, and fecundity.

I was happy to receive the submission of the following poem, a beautiful tribute to the poet’s mother. In this poem, I think many of us with see the Empress, our own mother, or perhaps ourselves.

Yin Yang
A Tribute to my Mother

Like the bow and stern of a ship

She is yin yang energy

Breaking waves in front

Falling back to the narrow

To not go down

The wind in the sail
A stabilizing force to not go adrift

Maneuvering storms raging beneath

A balancing act beyond defeat

Combined
She is discerning

Protecting and nurturing

Inner strength is self-reliance

A pioneer you would like to meet

Paving a way beyond defeat

Threads twisting by her feet

With a machine making a living

Without the masculine

There is still a feminine

Peace

I’ve always resonated with the message of the “Prayer of Saint Francis.” It says, in part: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”

I appreciate the idea that we can each be an instrument, or a tool, through which Higher Power works to bring peace to the world. The concept of being a bringer of peace is larger than any one world view or spiritual belief system.

I was surprised to learn that the “Prayer of Saint Francis” dates back only to 1912, and was clearly not written by the Saint. Nonetheless, its simple message is comforting, encouraging and empowering. We can each be an instrument of peace. We can each bring hope, light and joy to the world.

To do this, we must first find peace within.

As we each find that place of inner balance, we each become an instrument of peace in the outer world.

Three Tarot Cards for Peace

There are many tarot cards that can indicate, advice or encourage peace and balance. Here are the three which I feel most clearly speak of peace.

When you see these cards in a reading, know that there may be a need to seek peace.

You can also use these cards to help manifest a more peaceful energy around you, though meditation and reflection.

The High Priestess is the card of serenity, balance, wisdom and meditation. Associated with perfection in womanhood, the High Priestess sits between the pillars of mercy and severity. In meditation she is able to access the dream world, and the world of the subconscious.

The Two of Swords is often seen as a card of choices and decisions. We balance between two ideas, or two directions. The blindfold suggests that we can have no outside influence. The heart is crossed off, indicating a need to be logical, rather than emotional.

In the Thoth Tarot, the Two of Swords has the keyword of “Peace.” The Two of Swords teaches us the practical nature of finding peace; to be at peace even when we don’t know what comes next, or when we can’t see ahead.

The Four of Swords is typically the card of retreat, meditation and recovery. This card indicates the peace we find when we have no other choice. That is, the peace we find when we take time to heal. The Four of Swords suggests the need to back away from a battle that can’t be won.

As we can see, each of these cards addresses the concept of “peace” in a different way.

The High Priestess finds peace by looking deeply within, and finding perfect balance.

The Two or Swords makes peace by accepting a situation as it is in the moment.

The Four of Swords makes peace by seeking healing.

Learning Tarot: Seven of Cups

In the Rider Waite Smith image of the Seven of Cups we see a figure dwarfed by his own imaginings. In his vision, he sees cups dancing in front of him, each filled with something different.

Some of the cups are desirable. Other, much less so.

Here, in our journey through the watery suit of Cups, we come to the place where we must look inside at our own feelings, and make the choices that feel right for us.

Sometimes the Seven of Cups can indicate confusion or illusion.

When we see the Seven of Cups, we need to make sure we are grounded in reality, and are clear-minded as we assess our situation.

In tarot, the number seven often indicates the choices, processes and lessons that we must make and endure on our own, without help from anyone else.

In the Seven of Cups, we have the opportunity to make some decisions. We also have the need to seek clarity, and to make sure we know what is real and what is not.

Next week we will continue the journey with the Eight of Cups.

Your One-Card Weekly Reading

Your one-card reading this week is The Empress.

Typically, the Empress can refer to motherhood, and issues of hearth and home.

The Empress is a card of abundance, luxury and authority.

When we see the Empress, we know that now is a time for the disciplined creativity that makes a house a home.

The Empress nurtures and creates, and invites you to explore your own creative energies, and to do the things that you find nurturing.

Sometimes, the Empress appears to remind us of our matriarchal ancestors in spirit.

Sometimes, the Empress indicates our need to heal from mother issues.

When the Empress appears, it is time to get busy taking care of you!

Now is a time to invest in successful projects.

Now is a time to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Now is a time to pamper yourself just a little!

This week, enjoy your home, nurture your family, take care of yourself and manifest your abundance!

Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate all the wonderful women in our lives. It’s a time to honor those who give life, and those who make life better.

Mother’s Day is also a great time to honor Mother Earth. As the weather becomes more pleasant we have the opportunity to find peace, healing and joy by spending time in nature.

Happy Mother’s Day to all who nurture life, and to all who create life.

Mother's Day Tarot

Mother’s Day has always been a very special day in my tarot profession. Many years ago, in the mid-1990s, I held the very first “Christiana’s Psychic and New Age Fair” at the King’s Inn in Putnam, Connecticut, on Mother’s Day. We were so blessed that so many people turned out to enjoy readings, attend seminars and buy books, jewelry and candles.

Holding the Putnam psychic fair on Mother’s Day became a tradition we kept for many years. Often, mothers and daughters would come to celebrate the day at the psychic fair together.

These days, I do much of my work by phone and Skype. Mothers and daughters still like to have readings together. Just the other day I had a reading with a mother and daughter who used to come to the fair in Putnam. We’re all a bit older since we saw each other last. The daughter and I are computer savvy. The mother is not.

That didn’t stop Mom from having a great reading with me on Skype! She simply visited her daughter’s home. Her daughter set up the Skype. All Mom had to do was sit in front of the computer and talk with me. She was delighted! It was hard to believe that so many years had passed, and that there were so many miles between us. Giving the reading over Skype felt if there were no time or distance between us at all!

It’s been an honor to share tarot readings, classes and events with so many mother-daughter teams over the years. Now, modern technology makes it easy to keep connected with the people we love, and with the things we enjoy.

Limitless Abundance with the Empress, the "Mother" of Tarot

Major Arcana 3, the Empress, is often associated with motherhood. In divination, the Empress can indicate pregnancy, issues with family members, or a message from your mother in spirit.

Within this card we also see a great deal of abundance and luxury. The Empress does not appear tired, as most mothers are. The Empress has plenty of resources.

So many of the stresses of motherhood come from a lack of resources; time, money or energy.

Imagine having a limitless supply of time, money and energy with which to nurture others, as well as having enough left over to nurture yourself!

Here is an exercise to bring some of the limitless abundance of the Empress into your life.

Simply take the Empress card from your deck and spend some timing looking at the image. Relax, and breathe for a few minutes.

Now imagine that you are the Empress. Imagine that you are wearing a crown of stars, or seated on a throne, or surrounded by woodland creatures. In your mind, become the Empress herself.

Call this image to mind several times a day as a self-blessing. As the energy of the Empress come into your life you will be blessed with greater resources, in greater abundance.

A Mother's Day Reading

Every mother gives their child at least one precious thing – life. Many of us are lucky to have mothers who give us much more than that.

Either way, another thing every mother will give every child is at least one thing to tell their therapist! With that in mind, here’s a two-card spread in honor of Mother’s Day.

Card One: What is something I learned or inherited from my Mother that I should try to maximize and celebrate?

Card Two: What is something I learned or inherited from my Mother that I should try to heal from, or remove from my life?

Learning Tarot: Ten of Wands

In the Rider-Waite-Smith image we see a person carrying his bundle. From the path he walks we can see it is a long distance to the town. He successfully carries his burden alone.

Typical key words for the Ten of Wands are burdens, responsibilities and oppression. This card can indicate a heavy burden, either real or imagined. It can indicate a difficult task that you need to accomplish on your own. Sometimes the Ten of Wands represents a feeling of being overwhelmed. Sometimes the Ten of Wands can represent emotional baggage.

For me, the Ten of Wands can be a card of encouragement. The burden is heavy and the journey is long, but you are doing what you need to do. You will continue to do what you need to do until the journey is over.

The suit of Wands, Ace through Ten, tells the story of an inspiration, something that ignited, survived, grew and thrived; something that needed to be defended and preserved. Now, this creation is nearing its successful completion.

Next week we will visit with the Page of Wands.

Premium Tarot Class at the Harvey Building in West Palm Beach
An In-Depth Journey into the Major Arcana – The Material World
Tarot Grandmaster Christiana Gaudet has developed a system for learning and understanding tarot that will help each tarot seeker use the cards not only as potent tools of divination, but also as tools for spiritual growth.

With this system, card meanings are easy to remember, and the lessons of each card are easy to understand.

Beginners will develop a solid foundation for their tarot study. Experienced readers will discover new ways to utilize tarot.

In this class, students will develop an understanding of The Fool, and the first seven cards of The Major Arcana. These cards hold the secrets of career, relationships and personal mastery.

Students will learn the astrological, numerological and elemental associations for each card. Students will contemplate the Fool’s Journey through these seven cards, and discuss how the lessons of each card apply to common experiences in modern life.

The first seven cards are a map for mastering the material world. Students will learn the invaluable philosophies inherent in these cards.

Armed with a complete understanding of each card, students will have an easy time learning ways of interpreting the cards when reading for themselves and others.

This Week’s One –Card Reading

This week our one-card reading is not drawn, but chosen.  Sometimes tarot works equally well when we choose a card on which to focus our attention.  That is what I have done this week.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I chose The Empress for our focus.

The Empress reminds us to honor our mothers, and reminds us to nurture those around us.  It also reminds us to nurture ourselves.

The Empress teaches us to be creative, to enjoy nature, and to hold the abundance around us in gratitude.

Even if you are not feeling as abundant as you would like, focus on the image of the Empress and know that your needs will be fulfilled.  Have gratitude for what you do have, and have faith that you will have what you need without struggle.

This Week’s Special Read

In honor of Mother’s Day, this week’s Special Read is my poem about The Empress, from my 78 Poems Project.  Read it here.

I will look forward to seeing you or speaking with you soon!

Christiana
